The Most Creative Things That Happened In 2014

The Most Creative Things That Happened In 2014 | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

Despite the surging stream of head-desk moments discussed on TV or about TV, creativity still thrived in 2014. Visionary directors unveiled cinematic experiments they'd been tinkering with for over a decade. Two funny ladies from the Internet made a Comedy Central series and proved that a show about being young in New York could still get people talking. And in the perfect culmination of entertainment news colliding with world news in a positive way, a sitting president appeared on Zach Galifianakis and Scott Aukerman's web series.

Look through the slides above to see 20 more of our favorite movies, shows, music, and moments that made getting through this tough year easier....

Jeff Domansky's insight:

Mo' "bests." These are the shows, movies, scenes, performers, web series, and everything else Fast Company loved in creativity this past year.

The Best And Worst Branding Of 2014

The Best And Worst Branding Of 2014 | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

Great branding is more than a logo. It’s more than a list of acceptable fonts, too, or even some 100-page PDF containing everything from measurements on proper margins to deep verb-subject-adjective explorations on writing the proper "voice." Great branding is really the DNA of product or company, manifested through various media in ways that the public can recognize and understand.

With that in mind, above is a collection of our biggest branding stories of 2014. It’s not just a highlight reel of great branding. You’ll see some of that, of course, but you’ll also see some of the worst branding of 2014, too, along with essays on branding from some of the best names in the business....

Jeff Domansky's insight:

Continuing my curated series of worthwhile "best of" posts from 2014, this one from Fast Company takes a look at some of the wins and fails in branding. Enjoy it over a relaxing eggnog.

How to Give a Bad Infographic a Makeover | HubSpot

How to Give a Bad Infographic a Makeover | HubSpot | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it
Given the popularity and effectiveness of visual content for marketing, it's no surprise that today's marketers are creating more and more infographics. They're a more enjoyable way of digesting statistics, data sets, and timelines, and they can drive more traffic and engagement than plain text.

Even though there are a lot of good infographics out there, there are still a ton of bad infographics out there, too. You usually know one when you see one: Either it's jam-packed with information, or it hardly shows any useful information at all. Sometimes it's loud with clashing colors; other times, it's plain and boring.

But "knowing it when you see it" doesn't help you prevent from making a bad infographic. Here to dissect what a bad infographic looks like is an infographic from Vertical Measures. Check it out below.
Jeff Domansky's insight:

Here's an infographic with a couple of basic tips on, what else, how to make a bad infographics good.

2014 Year In Review: Why Do You Think Social Media Doesn't Work? It Does Work

2014 Year In Review: Why Do You Think Social Media Doesn't Work? It Does Work | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

The first company is not proof that social media works. That's not the issue. The issue, of course, is that social media simply "is". It's no different than the focus groups and surveys of twenty years ago. It's both marketing and customer research. It's data. It just "is". You cannot separate social media from the rest of the branding elements of the business. You can't. You cannot prove that social media works, and you cannot remove it from the business. It is not a tactic. It simply "is" the business. And customers are acquired cheaply as a result.

The second company can easily prove that social media doesn't work. They should know. They tried putting some sale messages on Twitter, and nobody responded. The second company is fully confident in their merchandising team. The second company just needs to find marketing channels to communicate the merchandising strategy to the customer. The second company is going "omnichannel". They'll ship-to-store or buy-online-pickup-in-store or get you a discount on your mobile phone when you're in the mall (if the customer ever steps foot in a mall anymore).

Retail is moving in two different directions....

Kevin Hillstrom shares a thoughtful post on whether social marketing works or not.

Holiday Analytics: Why Santa and his Elves Should be Checking Twitter

Holiday Analytics: Why Santa and his Elves Should be Checking Twitter | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

Advanced analysis of social media traffic can provide insights into these and many other consumer trends because it measures not only how many people are mentioning a given topic but also how they feel about it. We call that consumer sentiment, and it is a powerful tool for understanding the full story.

For example, SAP analyzed more than 28 million social media posts during this holiday season, which revealed that while consumers mentioned electronics twice as often as the next highest category, they had mixed reviews – sentiment was only 60%. Perhaps poor reviews, sold-out models, and missed deals disappointed shoppers this year....

Jeff Domansky's insight:

Nowadays, it can be easier to find your loved ones’ holiday wish lists by checking their social media postings rather than coercing them to jot it down.

The 18 Best Infographics Of 2014

The 18 Best Infographics Of 2014 | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

You could sift through piles of dense data sets in an attempt to understand the trends and discoveries that emerged in history, psychology, current events, and even fictional dragons in 2014. Or you could look at these infographics, which visualize otherwise overwhelming data as beautiful charts, graphs, and maps.

Co.Design's Infographic of the Day series regularly showcases the best in data visualization, and this past year saw many stellar examples of the power of the well-designed visualization to illuminate information about nearly any subject, from the serious (the daily activities of Congress) to the frivolous (a visual compendium of the world's best dogs).

We couldn't resist promoting Co.Design's own in-house data visualizations: the Great Wheel of Food Mashups and a map of each U.S. state's weirdest eating patterns (we're a bit food-fixated, apparently). Here, our favorite infographics from the past year.

The Best SlideShare Presentations of 2014 [SlideShare]

The Best SlideShare Presentations of 2014 [SlideShare] | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it
I don't know about you, but I love SlideShare -- both as a marketer, and just as a regular person who likes to look at cool presentations.

As a marketer, I love that the platform lets you create and publish interactive, beautiful pieces of content without a ton of design experience. As a person who likes to look at cool presentations, I love that there are tons of great ones to choose from that cover all manner of topics.
That being said, I do have one gripe with SlideShare: With so much content to choose from, it can be difficult to figure out which presentations are actually worth your time.

Well, discovering the best presentations just became a lot easier: The folks over at SlideShare sorted through and handpicked the very best SlideShare presentations of 2014 and put them together into the SlideShare below. (So meta, I know.) Flip through to see the top presentations from 2014 on business, leadership, design, and career development (among others). Find one you like? Click on the slide itself to be taken to the presentation.

By the end, you'll have plenty of presentation to inspire your next deck ... or at the very least, teach you something new.
