Digital Marketing Lexicon - the truth behind nine buzzwords - diginomica | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

Being a marketer has kept me on my toes and has continually challenged me to grow. When I see new faces in the industry, I encourage them to embrace their jobs with an open mind. Things change quickly, and as a result, context is king.

What meant or felt like one thing five years ago means something very different today, and I know those definitions and applications will only continue to evolve with each customer Sailthru works with. Here are nine examples....

Jeff Domansky's insight:

Digital marketing buzzwords are not only over-used, they are misleading. Sailthru's Cassie Lancellotti-Young reveals truth behind nine marketing buzzwords.

Marketing is broken. Bring on context.

Marketing is broken. Bring on context. | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

We have to face the truth about marketing today. It is fundamentally broken. Those in the business know the stats. Our research indicates only 0.1% of display ads are clicked on, yet  comScore SCOR -1.14%’s Digital Future In Focus report for 2013 reports in the U.S. alone 5.3 trillion of them were served last year, primarily paid for by clicks. Email marketing, largely seen as the most cost-effective marketing channel sees a vast majority of its email go un-opened, let alone clicked-though. Direct mail has response rates in the low single digits and continues to fall.  And even TV can no longer hold the attention of a consumer long enough to deliver a commercial to them, with Millward Brown Digital reporting 78% of consumers accessing second screens while they watch (or cut the cord and stream on their phone or tablets).

The answer to improving marketing results today seems to be ‘do more of it’ rather than do it smarter. And let’s be honest about the tactics. Many marketers do not routinely use even basic segmentation and targeting of advertising today. Look-alike targeting based on demographics and sites-visited is about as sophisticated as it gets in most cases. And the result? According to a recent Aima Institute study over half of consumers now “take steps to actively avoid brands.” Consumers are tuning out. We all have. Instead of seeing something relevant, we are bombarded by weapons of mass distraction....

Rich Becker: Customer Loyalty Is Hardwired Into Customer Experience

Rich Becker: Customer Loyalty Is Hardwired Into Customer Experience | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

Enrollment levels in customer loyalty programs may have reached an all-time high, but that doesn't mean all loyalty programs are created equal or that all customers are equally loyal.

According a study recently released by Bond Brand Loyalty, as many as one-third of all loyalty program participants wouldn't remain loyal to the brand if it weren't for the program. Some executives might not care beyond the surface sales data, but expect that sentiment to change in the near future.

Customers are becoming more selective about loyalty programs despite having increased their enrollment from 10 in 2014 to 13 in 2015. Mostly, they want to avoid spam-centric programs that push out content and opt in to those that truly listen and understand their customers....

Yet a separate analysis of 32 major retailers found tablet and mobile phone users are able to start shopping on their devices and complete the cycle in-store with only 22 and 19 percent of retailers, respectively....

Atavist Redesign Turns Long-Form Portal Into Magic Word Processor

Atavist Redesign Turns Long-Form Portal Into Magic Word Processor | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

What has always set Atavist apart from other online publishers, though, is the singular care with which that story was being presented, regardless of the platform on which it was being experienced. "When we started The Atavist, there was no one thinking about how to design and tell a story online," explains Ratliff.

"Even if you had a great idea about how to tell a story through design, you needed a developer to execute it. So we tried to build the platform to let nondevelopers make beautiful stories without programming the software themselves."

That was the magic of the Atavist platform, which made it easy for writers to not just compose their stories, but design them as a proper multimedia, multidevice experience. So when The Atavist became a hit—it has been nominated for eight National Magazine Awards, winning this year for Feature Writing, and 11 of its stories have been optioned for big-screen treatment by Hollywood—Ratliff and his colleagues decided to spin the platform out as its own product, the Creativist, which anyone could use to tell beautiful stories and then publish on the web or through the Creativist app. And now, in turn, the Creativist is rolling itself back into Atavist as a single cohesive platform....

Jeff Domansky's insight:

Launching today, the new Atavist could just be the most beautiful and powerful way to write on the web. Writers should check it out.

How PR is seizing the advantage in content marketing

How PR is seizing the advantage in content marketing | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

A couple of weeks ago my colleague Tony wrote about the importance of content in marketing, and how a return to the art of storytelling would be one of the big stories of 2015 come year end.

This is a subject I wanted to follow up on, partly because we’ve been getting a lot of interest lately from clients looking to invest in content-based agencies, and also because here at Green Square we’re all in agreement that content marketing is as much a part of the future of marketing as data and mobile.

This is particularly the case in PR, which of all marketing disciplines has put itself forward as the custodian of content for brands; it has always been closest to journalism as well....

Logo design holds a very important role in the promotion of any brand. A logo is the main identity of an individual or a corporation. The logo design process is very complicated as it requires incorporating the complete image of a person or a company into one single image that would be used for this purpose for years.

A logo must be creative, otherwise it won’t stay in the minds of the viewers and thus, the brand would be forgotten too. A logo may be predefined or exaggerated depending on the need of the client. But the most important thing in logo designing is the, “less is more” strategy...
