Inside a serial narrative: A story is ‘a promise that the end is worth waiting for’ | Poynter

Benham and her husband, journalist Tom French, were faced with a pivotal question: Fight for their daughter’s life or let her go? In a recent three-part series in Poynter’s Tampa Bay Times, Benham wrote about how she and French confronted this question and how the answer they sought has changed their lives.

“A story is a promise,” French said to her as they read to Juniper. “It’s a promise that the end is worth waiting for.”

This was powerful, personal storytelling which I guess are the other components of great stories.

How Google Is Reimagining Books

How Google Is Reimagining Books | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

The first sign that Reif Larsen's Entrances & Exits is not a typical e-book comes at the table of contents, which is just a list of chapters titled "Location Unknown." Click on one of them, and you'll be transported to a location (unknown) inside Google Street View, facing a door. Choose to enter the house and that's where the narrative, a sort of choose-your-own-adventure string of vignettes, begins. As the book's description reads, it's a "Borgeian love story" that "seamlessly spans the globe" and it represents a fresh approach to the book publishing industry.

Larsen's book is one of the inaugural titles from Editions at Play, a joint e-books publishing venture between Google Creative Lab Sydney and the design-driven publishing house Visual Editions, which launched this week. With the mission of reimagining what an e-book can be, Editions at Play brings together the author, developers, and designers to work simultaneously on building a story from the ground up. They are the opposite of the usual physical-turned-digital-books; rather, they're books that "cannot be printed."...

Jeff Domansky's insight:

A Google lab in Australia is reinventing e-books and it's worth a look for authors and publishers.

Learn the History of Japan in 9 Incredibly Weird Minutes

Learn the History of Japan in 9 Incredibly Weird Minutes | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

Bill Wurtz whisks you through 40,000 years of Japanese history in just 9 minutes. His completely manic animation style gives you just enough to understand the basics of what’s going on (or maybe you’ll just be more confused).

Topics he hits: how did Japan get its name? How did the samurai rise to power? Why did Japan fight against Germany in WWI, then with them in WWII?

Ok, let’s be honest… all his answers are going to need more research… but it does enlighten us on the incredibly different, turbulent, crazy and creative events that made Japan the unique island that it is today. Watch this insanity and wonder:...

This is an incredibly creative video animation. Recommended viewing. 9/10

"How to Write Short" by Roy Peter Clark - without bullshit

"How to Write Short" by Roy Peter Clark - without bullshit | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

The biggest problem with how people write now is that they are out of touch with how people read now. People read online, and the average article gets 20 seconds of attention.

But writing short is not so easy. It takes discipline. Poynter Institute senior scholar Roy Peter Clark wants to help you to develop that discipline. He is a student of everything from tweets to headlines to fortune cookies to song lyrics. In a series of short (of course) chapters, he opens your eyes to how short writers do what they do.

As he says, “When it comes to the how of short writing, you will find three paths: learning short writing through reading; practicing the best short writing moves; and cutting longer texts down to size.” This is what he teaches; you should learn it....

Jeff Domansky's insight:

Writing short is a craft.

Hannah Haid's curator insight, Today, 1:31 AM

Never have I read an article so helpful and relevant on the education spectrum. This article really resonates with me as I have a problem with keeping my writing short, sweet, and to the point- I tend to write in a lot of detail with fancy words to make myself stand out. This works for me most of the time, but it requires a lot of work. Author Roy Peter Clark clearly took his research to heart, as this article was short, sweet, and to the point- a few simple tips and important advice that he got out of the book he read was all that was needed. This is important because he even mentions in the article that most stories online don’t get more than 20 seconds of attention, and I and probably many others my age can say that this is true. As time passes and peoples’ attention spans decrease by the millisecond (from these damned pieces of portable technology we all can’t live without), we find that we just don’t have time for anything anymore. If we see an interesting story online, we read the first three or so sentences to see if it’s of any interest. If it doesn’t catch our eye or include visuals within that allotted length of sentences, we move on and keep scrolling through our news feeds and timelines to look for the next story to catch our eyes. This article will stay in the front of my mind for as long as I continue to write-especially since it comes “Without Bullshit”.

Why Snapchat Will Be Great for B2B Companies

Why Snapchat Will Be Great for B2B Companies | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

I don’t understand how people don’t see the obvious, common trend of what happens to popular social networks like Snapchat.

They don’t see that these platforms start off young, start off consumer based, start in a niche, and then go mainstream. It baffles me that people don’t understand that when an app hits 100 million active users, it’s gone mainstream. And what does that mean? It means that the platform can start to mature and start getting deeper into the business world. That’s because once you have the attention of the 35 to 65 year old world, you now have the potential to cross over into the B2B world.

I always like to say “Behind every B is a C.” What that means is, behind every business there is a human that is making the decisions. If you’re selling a phone system or a SaaS product to a big corporation, a human being is still making that decision. If you’re able to make content on a platform around interests in your specific industry, you’ve put yourself in a position to do B2B business....

Viveka shares that the newest LinkedIn app, the LinkedIn Mobile App is actually an update of the earlier app, but that there are a lot of other apps within LinkedIn people might not know about, such as the Job Search app.

There are also the apps that came with companies purchased by LinkedIn, such as SlideShare and Connected, a Customer Relationship Management (CRM) tool. (Note: After this recording, LinkedIn announced they were retiring the Connected App on March 21, 2016.)In addition, there are tools like the Recruiter app, Sales Navigator, Lookup and Elevate which are associated with LinkedIn’s premium accounts. Then there’s LinkedIn’s news reader, Pulse, and the new Groups app.

Although all of LinkedIn apps are available to iOS users, only some are available on Android, and Viveka reminds listeners that not all of the apps are free.  For example, Elevate is a combination CRM, content management, content curation tool priced for medium to large companies....

Types of Branded Content: A Guide to 11 Popular Formats

Types of Branded Content: A Guide to 11 Popular Formats | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

The effectiveness ratings of branded content vary widely (see below). Interestingly, infographics is the tactic that had the greatest increase in usage (from 51% last year to 62% this year) for B2B marketers. Equally interesting, in the B2C spectrum, the use of blogging declined from 72% to 67% in 2015.

Determining the kinds of branded content your brand should create can be perplexing. Contently’s Sam Slaughter suggests you begin by considering:

- Theme

- Length

- Volume

- Format...

Jeff Domansky's insight:

With most companies pursuing content marketing more voraciously than ever, it's time to examine which types of branded content make sense for your company.

Four theories on the declining trust in Canadian social media

Four theories on the declining trust in Canadian social media | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

Yesterday I had the pleasure of attending my seventh Edelman Trust Barometer launch event in Toronto. This year’s results are some of the most interesting I’ve seen, highlighting a disparity in trust amongst what we call the “informed” public and the mass population, and the ongoing failure of businesses to live up to the expectations that people have of them when it comes to societal good (you can see the full results on SlideShare).

One of the interesting notes in this year’s Canadian Trust Barometer results was that trust in social media has fallen over the last year. In fact, social media was the only one of the five media types we examined to experience a decline in trust....

With Millions Of New Bottle Designs, Every Diet Coke Will Soon Be Unique

With Millions Of New Bottle Designs, Every Diet Coke Will Soon Be Unique | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

Today, you probably know Diet Coke for its silver and red branding—which is more or less how it’s looked since Coca-Cola’s sugar-free alternative first launched in 1982. But starting this month, in a market where diet soda sales are down, Diet Coke is going bespoke, as millions of unique designs are hitting U.S. shelves for the first time as part of a campaign called "It’s Mine."

So for the next several months, no two 12-ounce bottles of Diet Coke will look exactly alike.

"Personalization and customization is a huge trend, obviously," says Rafael Acevedo, group director of Diet Coke in North America. With Coca-Cola’s first major personalization campaign, Share a Coke in 2014, the company put thousands of people’s names onto bottles. The idea was that you’d spot someone’s name and want to buy them a Coke—and it’s an idea that worked, with measurable uptake in both short term sales and longer term brand loyalty. For Diet Coke, that concept got a tweak. "In this case, it’s more personal, "Acevedo says, "to have that sense that Diet Coke is giving you something no one else can have."...

Jeff Domansky's insight:

This marketing personalization experiment by Coca-Cola is worth watching.

It’s always fascinating to hear artists who create history recount back-stories in their own words. When I interview 1960s rock icons, I try to ask what they remember about the moment they wrote and/or recorded their big hits.

In the past, we’ve done similar interviews with Art Garfunkel (Sounds of Silence), Cream’s late Jack Bruce (Sunshine Of Your Love) and Johnny Rivers (Secret Agent Man). In separate interviews with three of the four surviving members of Jefferson Airplane – Grace Slick, and Jack Casady and Jorma Kaukonen – we discussed the hits Somebody To Love and White Rabbit from the Surrealistic Pillow album. Following are edited excerpts from what they had to say....
