Inside a serial narrative: A story is ‘a promise that the end is worth waiting for’ | Poynter

Benham and her husband, journalist Tom French, were faced with a pivotal question: Fight for their daughter’s life or let her go? In a recent three-part series in Poynter’s Tampa Bay Times, Benham wrote about how she and French confronted this question and how the answer they sought has changed their lives.

“A story is a promise,” French said to her as they read to Juniper. “It’s a promise that the end is worth waiting for.”

Future of News | BBC | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

Jerry Seinfeld, the comedian, once said:

“It's amazing that the amount of news that happens in the world everyday always just exactly fits the newspaper.”

Today, it doesn’t fit.

There is more information, more readily available, more immediately, in more formats, on more devices and to many hundreds of millions more people than ever before.

And it used to be said that freedom of the press is limited to those who own one.

Today, anyone with an internet connection and a Twitter account can make the news. If you choose, the powers that be are you....

Why the Future of Content Marketing Is Bright

Why the Future of Content Marketing Is Bright | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

As a small business owner, the concept of content marketing makes you raise an eyebrow and ask yourself lots of questions that might include:
Do I really need a content strategy to speak my mind and bond with my clients? Couldn’t I just let the words flow freely?

Don’t let your upcoming experiences provide the answers to these questions.

Trying to convey your messages without a well-researched, documented content marketing strategy would be like trying to steer a ship without a helm. In this case you would probably drown in a sea of disparate content pieces that do not actually add value to your audience and don’t do a great job at representing your business....

A Marketing Process That Built Two 7-Figure Companies in Three Years

A Marketing Process That Built Two 7-Figure Companies in Three Years | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

I’ve “sold” this marketing process to companies that hired me as a consultant. Now, I’m giving it away in this post. What you will read is applicable for solopreneurs as well as teams of 10+ marketers.

Before we begin, let’s assume every marketing campaign goes through 4 phases. (I call them discovery, traction, maximization, and King of the Hill.) By creating a process that addresses all 4 phases, we focus our marketing on definable goals. It helps us work smarter, not just harder.

To grow 7-figure companies rapidly, speed is obviously key. Every marketer aspires to be fast, so here’s how I erase a common bottleneck: my marketing rarely depends on outsiders. For example, rather than waiting for engineering and design teammates to build needed technology, my marketers cobble together the technology by using off-the-shelf solutions like Unbounce and Zapier....

[Study] 6 Image Qualities Which May Drive More Likes on Instagram

[Study] 6 Image Qualities Which May Drive More Likes on Instagram | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

For brands on Instagram, Likes don’t just represent engagement, they represent permission! Consumers who are liking an image that a brand produces are, in essence, inviting the brand into their life and acknowledging the brand’s creativity. Ultimately, this helps to create a more emotional connection. In effect, your brand is now in a screen along with consumers’ best friends.

Given the power of the “double-tap” on Instagram, Curalate was interested in discovering which types of image characteristics may drive more likes. In order to do so, we looked at a range of image features across 8,000,000 Instagram photos — including lightness, color, texture and background ratio — and found a few interesting results (see below). And although our data says what and not necessarily why, we have a strong hypothesis on the reasoning behind some of the results…

For instance, we found that images with a single dominant hue performed best. This is probably due to the fact that when you’re viewing an image just mere inches from your face, the absence of chaos can help you focus. Additionally, the fact that textured images generated more engagement could mean that various ridges and shadows grab eyeballs and cause a user to stop and take a harder look at a photo....

‘This.’ Has People Clamoring for an Invite | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it
“This” is now more than a pronoun. In the online realm of social media, “this” is a statement, a proclamation, a call to action. Written often in caps, or as a hashtag (#THIS), “this” means “I second this sentiment,” “This is great” or “Read this.”

Now, “this” is a social network, This.cm, which allows users to post one link a day, with the intent of sifting through the Internet noise and focusing attention on a standout news article, blog post or podcast.

Currently, the platform is available only to those who receive an invitation from one of the nearly 4,500 users.

The problem? Social media is comprised primarily of unstructured data, which is difficult to analyze.

A new approach called Mindset, Skillset, Dataset can help marketers make sense of complex social media data. Mindset refers to the ability to think beyond a certain frame of reference and look at the bigger ‘Why’ of solving a particular problem. Skillset refers to analytical techniques and tools that can be used to solve a particular problem. And Dataset refers to the copious amount of data generated from social media.

This: The social network that’s gaining in popularity among journalists | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

The concept behind This is deceptively simple, and if you’re the kind of person it’s meant to appeal to its allure should be immediately obvious: It’s a link-sharing network where every user is only allowed to share one link per day. That’s it.

There are no bells and whistles. There isn’t even a mobile app yet. Yet in the past two months since its soft launch it’s quickly catapulted to the top of the list of sites I visit daily, and I’m not alone.

Some of the most prominent journalists in media, from The Atlantic’s Ta-Nehisi Coates to Slate’s David Plotz to MSNBC’s Chris Hayes, are among its early adopters, and thousands more are clamoring for invites once they become available.

Though the site wasn’t created to specifically service journalists, many of its earliest users work in media, most likely because the initial invites were sent out to Andrew Golis’s professional circle of friends and colleagues. And This also happens to solve a problem faced by the very people — journalists — who spend all their time staring at content feeds all day: media overload....

This. It's a social network that seems to appeal to journalists but could be useful for anyone looking for high quality links and ideas.

Free Advice About Your Lousy Whitepaper | Kevin Susman | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

If you’re relying on gated content to generate leads, then your content marketing strategy is dependent upon a basic sales transaction. I give you my contact information and you give me some content. Obviously, you think this is a fair trade. The problem is, and let me just be blunt about this, I don’t.

Who, Even Are You?

Let’s start with the fact that I probably don’t know much about your company. One could argue, in fact, that my desire to learn more about your company is motivating my interest in your gated content in the first place. Either that, or I’m just casually curious. I mean, clearly your SEO is working. But just because I’ve arrived at your gate doesn’t mean I want to move in. Or, stated another way, being interested in sampling your content doesn’t equate to being interested in you. In Tinder-speak, just because I gave you an initial thumbs up doesn't mean I'm ready to hook-up. I’m just going to call it how I see it - I think you’re over-charging for your content....
