How to start your social media year off with a bang | The Next Web

How to start your social media year off with a bang | The Next Web | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

January is normally the time where we look back on the last twelve months and decide what we want to improve. Cue promises that we’ll go to the gym more often, quit smoking, learn a new skill or language and so on. However, not only is it difficult to keep up any new changes, but the chances of you reverting back to your old habits increases with every new promise you take on.

Therefore, whether it’s for yourself or for your business, a clear plan of action is required if you want to make these changes a reality. It doesn’t matter how ambitious or modest your ambitions are, so long as they’re important to you, that’s what matters. While it can be difficult to get started, all big aims start with small steps so keep these in mind when you’re putting your plan together....

Jeff Domansky's insight:

Follow these social media suggestions to tune up your social media presence in 2013.

In Praise of the Peculiar: How and Why to Use Surreal Images - Web Design Ledger

In Praise of the Peculiar: How and Why to Use Surreal Images - Web Design Ledger | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

“Humans are complex and unpredictable, and there’s no reason why brand visuals can’t be, too.” – Lauren Catten, Art Director at Getty Images

Imagination is one of the four factors that make for a powerful image, and nothing stirs it more than Surreality – one of iStock & Getty Images’ 2016’s top visual trends.

The reason is simple: these original and sometimes peculiar compositions trigger a feeling of pleasure in experiencing the unpredictable. The aesthetic can transform an ordinary topic into something new and exciting. It can help distinguish a brand in a sea of similarity, making for memorable content that leaves a lasting impression. And, thanks to its hyper-immersive, psychedelic visuals, it has very broad appeal.

Nature-related images work as a particularly potent metaphor in this realm, leaving room for interpretation and creating meaningful connections with your content....

Jeff Domansky's insight:

Some interesting ideas on how and why to use surreal images to generate interest and attention.

Robots Are Taking Over Retail

Robots Are Taking Over Retail | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it
Though not quite as exciting (or terrifying) as artificial intelligence per se, chatbots and virtual assistants are proliferating, especially in retail. Through a partnership with IBM Watson, Macy's recently joined the growing list of retailers that are implementing AI-infused technology to help improve customers' shopping experiences.

That brands are flocking to Watson-esque technology is more sensible than it is remarkable. Retailers have long struggled to meaningfully marry digital with their in-store business, and while many assumed the advent of Big Data would help address some of the divide here, processing and actioning these reams of data has proved a considerable challenge for many. So, enter the robots; machines capable of quickly processing company and customer data and conveying their learnings to customers, often in a natural language conversation.

Obvious benefits aside, the increasing adaptation of Watson and its ilk begs a couple of questions: how are these chatbots and virtual assistants actually fitting into customers' everyday shopping experience, and (crucially) what role will human customer service agents play in a retail world ran by all knowing, talking/texting machi1nes?

Jeff Domansky's insight:

From augmented reality and artificial intelligence to bots, robots and more – retail is rocking with mobile.

NYT's Digital Ad Revenues Drop

NYT's Digital Ad Revenues Drop | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

Digital advertising, once touted as the savior of newspaper publishing, is proving to be yet another drag for many companies’ bottom lines.

The New York Times Co. announced that its digital ad revenues slipped again in the second quarter of the year, marking two consecutive quarters of year-over-year declines.

NYTCO reported that total digital ad revenues sank 6.8% to $45 million in the second quarter, which president and CEO Mark Thompson attributed to a drop in traditional Web display advertising, canceling out growth in newer digital ad categories including mobile and video.

The digital decline compounded print losses, down 14.1%, for a total ad revenue decline of 11.7%, to $131.2 million.

The ad declines were partially offset by continued growth in circulation revenues, due mainly to the success of NYTCO’s digital subscription strategy, with total circ revenues up 3% to $219.5 million....

Four Quick Instagram Video Tips For Publishers

Four Quick Instagram Video Tips For Publishers | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

However, with Instagram’s timeline now also algorithmically sorted and the aforementioned growth in engagement with video on the platform, it’s likely that these engagement rates will continue to rise.

It’s important to note that having a successful Instagram video strategy does not mean you’ll be able to directly transplant it to other networks. Although there are some elements that will cross over, and if the video itself is unique enough it will take off regardless, Instagram is very much its own place.

There will be differences from platform to platform, so assuming that the videos that you produce for your Facebook page will be immediate success on Instagram is a bad idea.

We took a closer look at Instagram videos in Spike to see what the most successful videos on the platform have in common....

That's why we have a lot of respect for the brands that have done it right. The ones that have figured out how to convey their value proposition to their buyer persona in just one, short sentence -- and a quippy one, at that.
