StumbleUpon, Digg, and Empire Avenue—among others—aren't worth the trouble, this blogger says.

Do you feel like you must be on all social media sites? They can eat up a lot of your time if you are on every one. I've joined most of them in the past three years, and have seen many of them change. A few don't drive the traffic they once did to my websites or blogs. Why spend time on them if they are not productive?

Here is my list of social media sites you should ditch...

5 Ways to Stay in Tune with Consumer Expectations - CommPRO.biz

5 Ways to Stay in Tune with Consumer Expectations - CommPRO.biz | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

Over the past 10 years, consumers have increasingly purchased brands from socially aware organizations.  With this shift, a huge emphasis has been placed on company procedures and sustainable practices. “Social responsibility has migrated from soft line to hard law,” says Paula Luff, Vice President of Corporate Social Responsibility at Hess Corporation.

She is right.  It’s no longer an added bonus for a business to be socially responsible; it is what’s expected from society.  Companies must understand consumer demand for CSR-related information and develop an appropriateCSR strategy based on company branding and values.

The Better Business Bureau recently held their annual forum, “Transformers: How Corporate Responsibility Trends Are Changing Business Now” in downtown Manhattan. This session featured top corporate responsibility professionals sharing best practices and tactics to develop socially responsible programs based on the increased demand for this information from today’s consumers.

While the discussion was related to many elements of CSR programming and reporting, there were five key takeaways that every company should understand:...

It should come as little surprise to anyone that mobile devices are growing in importance for business owners. While the importance of mobile has practically been a mantra for marketing experts for the past few years, research continues to find new ways that mobile devices have taken on new roles in the business process.

With so many products to choose from the internet makes it possible for consumers to research the products they think are considering buying. Mobile devices have become so essential for online retail because they give consumers the power of the internet to research and shop, while being able to do so at any location....

Jeff Domansky's insight:

A recent study from HookLogic found that more consumers are using their mobile devices as product research device as well as buy the products in some cases.

New Study: Data Reveals 67% of Consumers are Influenced by Online Reviews | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

Google processed over 1 trillion search queries in 2014. As Google Search continues to further integrate into our normal daily activities, those search results become increasingly important, especially when individuals are searching for information about a company or product.

To better understand just how much of an impact Google has on an individual’s purchasing decisions, we set up a research study with a group of 1,000 consumers through Google Consumer Surveys. The study investigates how individuals interact with Google and other major sites during the buying process....

Social Media is a Terrible Ecommerce Tactic - or is it? | Jay Baer

Social Media is a Terrible Ecommerce Tactic - or is it? | Jay Baer | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

Is social ineffective or just invisible?

But the challenge for social media—and for word of mouth marketing—is that they are inherently additive pieces of the conversion funnel, rather than causative.

Forrester Research suggests that word of mouth is part of 80% of all purchase funnels. At least some of this word of mouth is occurring via social media, with brand or product mentions spawning searches and/or direct URL entries that are included in this data. But, because social media wasn’t the final link in the chain, it gets none of the creditfor the desirable consumer behavior it spurred....

Does social media work for ecommerce? New research from Monetate says no, but Jay Baer says there may be a catch.

Just how real are mobile beacons?

Just how real are mobile beacons? | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

In fact, general interest in beacons seems to have peaked in late 2014, and they've been on a decline ever since, according to Google search trends.

This is also reflected in consumer awareness. Despite the privacy furor over the past few years, beacons—with their potential to seriously invade consumer privacy—have dwindled in consumer minds.

Hence, in 2014 a Harris poll found that 57% of smartphone owners were aware of in-store beacons, while 20% claimed to have used them. A more recent First Insights survey, however, uncovered that 70% of consumers couldn't distinguish a beacon from a beaver, and a paltry 3.4% claim to have used one....

Beacons are one of the most hyped technologies in marketing, but how real is their impact?

In the tech world, even as money pours over Silicon Valley like a flood, conspicuous consumption can be frowned upon."If someone buys a fancy car and posts a picture of it, they get ridiculed and berated," an anonymous Facebook executive once told The New York Times.

But inside Facebook there is one secret group in which discussing what you plan to buy with all this new cash is embraced, Nick Bilton reports for Vanity Fair. 6 Ways Local Merchants Can Compete in Organic Search Results | Street Fight

6 Ways Local Merchants Can Compete in Organic Search Results | Street Fight | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

Type in a generic search term for nearly any local service and you’re likely to see listings for national brands and retail chains. Local businesses have largely been pushed out of the first page of organic results for generic product/service keywords. Although Google displays a higher percentage of local search results for generic search terms than Bing or Yahoo, non-local, non-SMB websites still take up roughly 50% to 65% of the page-one space, according to a study by BrightLocal.

In order to get back on top, local merchants have to make a change in their SEO strategies. That means using more geo-modified terms, and it means relying more heavily on long-tail keywords — for example, “top hair stylist” or “wedding hair stylist” rather than just the generic “hair stylist.”

Here are six strategies for local merchants looking to compete for page-one real estate on Google, Yahoo, and Bing....

Valuable marketing advice you can use for local merchants to help improve search results for local buyers.

Millennial Schmillennial | immediate future | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

It doesn’t matter what industry you’re in, if you are consuming content online hardly a day goes by without someone somewhere dropping the “M” word.

Millennial.

“How millennial are you?”; “The Millennials Are Coming”; “10 Surprising Habits of Millennial Art Collectors”; and “3 Insights To Help Your Millennial Marketing Strategy Succeed”; are typical headlines that somehow find their way into everything.

Millennials are a hot topic for good reason. The estimated buying power of Millennials is around $1.3 trillion in the US and $10 trillion globally.

In the not-too-distant future, they will become the largest generation with the greatest combined purchasing power in human history.

It’s no wonder that brands are falling all over themselves, blinded by the dollar signs in their eyes, to try and figure out this audience.

This has led to the publication of countless pieces of content that offer helpful advice and endless Dos & Don’ts lists of what to do when trying to communicate with a Millennial audience.

It is for this reason that we need to step back and consider a few facts that everyone seems to be overlooking when it comes to Millennials....

The term "Millennial" is used widely in marketing circles, but what does it really describe and is it helpful in terms of defining a target audience?

Consumers shopping for freebies? Or marketers assuming so?

Consumers shopping for freebies? Or marketers assuming so? | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

It’s a pretty common lament online amongst brand marketers that the market is so spoilt by those offering everything free to the consumers, that there’s hardly anybody wanting to purchase anything at all.

Now we all know that isn’t true, because research every year points to fast growing volumes of internet selling and buying, and the trend seems only more increased with mobile now becoming the medium of choice for even more buying and selling than before. Could it be that it’s not really the customers online who are window shopping for freebies, and it’s the marketers who are assuming that customers want things free and will not pay?...

Jeff Domansky's insight:

How can online sales be booming year on year if all that customers really want is freebies? Are marketers making wrong assumptions on consumer psychology?

Survey offers empirical evidence that, despite perceived popularity of discount-based promotions, reward-based promotions actually result in higher purchase intention (short-term) as well as greater brand equity (long-term).

Palo Alto, September 1st– Ifeelgoods, the leading platform for setting up turn-key reward promotions and campaigns, announced today the results of a new study that measures the impact of reward-based promotions against traditional discount-based promotions with regard to brand equity and purchase intention.

With over 1,000 consumers surveyed worldwide, one of the study’s most compelling findings was the fact that reward-based promotions outperform discount-based promotions in both brand equity and purchase intention. The study shows that reward-based promotions are even more efficient compared to discount-based promotions from brands whose consumer base is mostly composed of frequent shoppers and/or utilitarian shoppers....

Marketo Data Tells Us: Which Channel Wins More, Faster

Marketo Data Tells Us: Which Channel Wins More, Faster | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

In my recent blog on channel conversion rate, I mentioned conversion was only the initial piece of the puzzle. To get the full picture of how effective your acquisition channels are, you also need to look at win rate, velocity, and pipeline created vs. cost.

So in this fourth blog in the Marketo Institute series, we’re going to look at the next two channel pipeline metrics: win rate and velocity.

You can’t measure the effectiveness of a channel just based on conversion rate. A lot of marketers fall in to the pit trap of stopping their metrics right before the marketing-to-sales handoff.

Without closed loop visibility from sales back to marketing, you often hear conversations like these:

Marketing: “Here are some high converting leads!”(3 months later)

Sales: “Those leads were garbage.”...

Choosing the Color Palette, Part 2: Tools for Pairing Colors - Piktochart

Choosing the Color Palette, Part 2: Tools for Pairing Colors - Piktochart | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

As we mentioned last week, picking the right colors is the single most important decision you can make when designing an infographic. Most designers realize this, and for years they’ve been trying to answer one question: is there a science to picking colors that work well together or is it just subjective? Why do some colors match, while others look strange?

The internet has been debating this for a while without much consensus, but I believe the real answer is both: it’s an art and a science. Every design decision is heavily influenced by a designer’s intuition and sense of aesthetics, but there is also a strong scientific component that conveys if a color works well with another.

Expert designers use it to validate their intuition, but we are going to learn how to use color theory to pair beautiful colors together....

Jeff Domansky's insight:
