My three or four readers may remember that we launched the “Boney Awards” to honor (or is that “dishonor”) excellence in boneheaded communications three years ago.  

 

As those steadfast readers know, I had originally envisioned a gala event on a grand scale – black tie, the Waldorf Astoria and a star-studded cast of presenters.  Sadly, I found no takers for the sponsorships I planned to offer as part of the package in conjunction with CommPro.  I couldn’t even get commitments for hero sandwiches and beer at the local Knights of Columbus hall.  Undaunted I press on with the announcement of this year’s Boney Award winners which include politicians, editors, movie and TV stars, among others....

I recently had a long conversation with Bob Gambert, a former TV news colleague of mine. It was sparked by a comment I made on Twitter that TV newsrooms should post original video content to Facebook instead of teases for newscasts and stories. He took exception, and the discussion eventually turned into a back and forth about the state of the TV industry. He’s of the opinion that social media should primarily be used to maximize profits. TV stations should display content where they can make money.

While I respect my friend and his point of view, I strongly disagree.

You hear plenty of others in the TV news industry – particularly higher-ups – sharing my friend’s opinion. (You also see it in practice on Facebook feeds and Twitter streams every day.) That’s an incredibly bad sign. It probably sounds familiar, because it’s the same attitude most people in print had about 15-20 years ago.

THE CLIFF IS APPROACHING.
That same disruption (or whatever catchy buzzword you want to use) is coming to TV news. And a person with his or her eyes open can see it coming from a mile away....

But jargon? Admit it, communicator, this gets the blood throbbing in your temples.

So you will be pleased to hear that others share your disdain for "ideate" and other teeth-gnashing corporate cant. The word won Forbes' third annual Jargon Madness tournament final, crushing "The Uber for X" by 219-160 votes.

Jargon Madness is the business magazine's NCAA-style bracket featuring "the 32 terms most abused by startup founders, developers and marketers, plus the [venture capitalists] who fund it all."

Forbes defines ideate as a "nonsense word meaning 'think,' 'dream up,' or 'conceive of an idea.' Formerly known as brainstorm."


"Unicorn" and "thought leader," two of my favorites, were eliminated in early rounds...

Last year the big update to search results came through the “nuclear bomb” that was Panda 4.0. The age of the keyword was essentially over, and proper storytelling blogs and press releases were in. Many claimed that SEO was on its way out completely.

Recently, Google made even more changes. Though the advent of Panda 4.0 made press releases seem borderline useless, the search engine has now revalued them. There’s one big alteration, though, that changes the way savvy PR pros should use press releases....

This particular sea creature was used to promote the water- and shock-resistant camera because octopuses are among the most intelligent denizens of the deep. (Besides, clams can't take direction, and lobsters are too darn tasty.)


A special rig helped Rambo push a shutter button to capture images of visitors outside her tank at Kelly Tarlton's Sea Life Aquarium in New Zealand. Rambo's trainer, Mark Vette, says it took her just three attempts to understand the process, though at times she behaved like an eight-armed diva, smashing several cameras to bits during a two-month training process. (Elsewhere, this little dude mastered octo-selfies in no time!)...

Gawker recently turned food marketers' heads with a 2,500-word takedown of blogger, dietary guru and anti-GMO activist Vani Hari, aka "Food Babe." Author Yvette d'Entremont, who started a rival blog under the "Science Babe" moniker, asserted that Hari peddles easily disproved pseudoscience designed to frighten people into emptying their pantries of "toxins" and send angry emails to major food conglomerates.


Vani, a New York Times bestselling writer and TV talk show guest, responded with a can't-we-just-be-friends lament before casting d'Entremont as a "biased," pro-pesticide advocate promoting that most unpopular of agricultural villains—Monsanto. She even created a disclaimer for readers who visit her site from links in the Gawker post: "Coming from Gawker? Warning: I believe you should have both sides of the story before you make an informed opinion. Read the other side of the story here."


A larger trend is lurking beneath this spat over digital influence: America is facing a growing crisis of credibility in food labeling. And as consumers struggle to decide whom to trust—passionate bloggers or major food brands—agencies can get caught in the crossfire....

What makes a great influencer? Influencers are humans, clearly, not automated content management systems. They are mega-connected on social media (aka they have earned the trust of many other humans to deliver on what they promise) and they have the unique ability to inspire action. The good influencers out there have great knowledge in a particular field, know how to curate that knowledge, add their unique vision and value, and they know how to communicate with their audiences.

Great storytelling is a great differentiator.

A useful article which speaks volumes about the importance of developing the story telling culture. This is not just about entrepreneurs and business heads but also about educators and facilitators. The storytelling culture can make learning more experiential, it caters to congintive learning, that is social congintive learning. While no doubt the article is for corporates and business houses, I feel it has a lot of relevance in the field of education, both at school and in college. Think for example, how many more people would like to go through the story of your research on values rather than a dry statistical analysis of how values matter!

A number of famous novelists spent time in ad jobs—among them, F. Scott Fitzgerald (who worked at Barron Collier in New York, where he wrote the line, "We keep you clean in Muscatine"), Joseph Heller (once a copywriter for Merrill Anderson in New York) and Salman Rushdie (who logged seven years at Ogilvy London, after failing an interview test at J. Walter Thompson that supposedly included making up a jingle about seatbelts).


Those three authors are the subject of these amusing ads—showing client feedback on their famous novels—to promote a British fiction contest for advertising writers. "Write for yourself. Not for a client," say the ads.


Entries are closed for the 2015 Winston Fletcher Fiction Prize, unfortunately, but it is an annual thing. (You have to work in advertising, marketing or a related business to enter.) Check out the full ads below....

If you thought Coke Zero's drinkable billboard was impressive, Carlsberg would like to serve you some outdoor advertising with a bit more kick.


The Danish brewer, with help from ad agency Fold7 and design company Mission Media, unveiled a beer-dispensing billboard at The Old Truman Brewery on Brick Lane in London. The billboard was emblazoned with the headline, "Probably the best poster in the world." The brand was on hand to monitor the drinkers, making sure no one was under 18....
