The 10 Most Disruptive News Apps of 2012 | PBS MediaShift

The 10 Most Disruptive News Apps of 2012 | PBS MediaShift | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

According to research produced by Nielsen, as of 2012 the majority of phone owners in the U.S. now operate smartphones. Accordingly, the growth in app markets for Apple and Android continues unabated, and 2012 brought users a strong list of powerful news and content browsing options.

Publishers, in particular broadcasters and newspapers, were quick in releasing apps for the first-generation iPhone and Android handsets, but 2012 was remarkable for the number of great mobile apps that were developed to disrupt news consumption.

On the footsteps of startups such as Flipboard, Pulse and Stitcher, we've put together a list of some of the most innovative and refined mobile apps to come along within the past year, along with a couple of existing apps that went through a "rebirth" with a comprehensive redesign. These apps represent improvements in bulk aggregation, the evolution of the app ecosystem that has produced "companion" apps, as well as some potentially disruptive concepts....

Jeff Domansky's insight:

Just an awesome list of news apps worth checking out. Plus there are other suggestions worth trying in the many post comments.

Reddit: A Beginner's Guide | Mashable

Reddit: A Beginner's Guide | Mashable | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it
Spend some quality time with Reddit -- you'll find it an essential resource, a self-correcting marketplace of ideas. Get started with our guide.

To the uninitiated, Reddit looks like a mess — text links, comment threads, points, upvotes, downvotes. At best, posts seem contextless — at worst, totally random.

But spend some quality time with “The Front Page of the Internet,” and you’ll find it’s an essential resource, a self-correcting marketplace of ideas that’s nearly impervious to marketers.

Simply put, Reddit is a message board wherein users submit links. What differentiates it from a real-time information network like Twitter is that the stream of content is curated by the community. Items of value are “upvoted,” and those deemed unworthy are “downvoted.” This determines a post’s position on the site, and items that hit the front page are seen by hundreds of thousands of people (consequently, sending boatloads of traffic to the linked website).

7 Ways to Be a Successful Social Marketer

7 Ways to Be a Successful Social Marketer | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

Social marketing is an advertising art that is widely utilized but less widely successful, forcing marketers who are looking for real, measurable results to hone their tactics. Review our list of seven ways to be a successful social marketer to help give you a leg up on the competition!

1. Build strong, targeted social media accounts.

Your social media accounts are only as useful as the friends and followers connected to them, making the first step of building those accounts absolutely crucial. Instead of simply working to obtain as many connections as possible, work instead to connect with like-minded people who are more likely to have an interest in what you have to offer.

Doc Searls Weblog · Table for two

The Web as we know it today was two years old in June 1997, when the page below went up. It lasted, according to Archive.org, until October 2010. When I ran across it back then, it blew my mind — especially the passage I have boldfaced in the long paragraph near the end.

The Internet is a table for two. Any two, anywhere. All attempts to restrict it and lock it down will fail to alter the base fact that the Net’s protocols are designed to eliminate the functional distance, as far as possible, between any two points, any two devices, any two people. This is the design principle for a World of Ends. That last link goes to a piece David Weinberger and I wrote in 2003, to as little effect, I suspect, as @Man’s piece had in 1997. I doubt any of the three of us would write the same things the same ways today. But the base principle, that table-for-two-ness, is something I believe all of us respect. It won’t go away. That’s why I thought it best to disinter @Man’s original and run it again here....
