Breaking [News] is broken | Nieman Lab | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it
"What is needed are newsrooms that can filter, verify, curate, and amplify social media for their audiences, in addition to journalists reporting in enterprising and contextual ways."

The approach that large traditional news organizations take in breaking news needs to be re-thought in the age of social media. Hurricane Sandy provided an example of how resources are often wasted by journalism organizations during breaking-news events while also demonstrating how vital authenticating coverage can be....

What is needed are newsrooms that can filter, verify, curate, and amplify social media for their audiences, in addition to journalists reporting in enterprising and contextual ways. Andy Carvin at NPR excelled at this during coverage of the Middle East and I think we should and will see more of it in 2013....

Jeff Domansky's insight:

Michael Maness's predictions about journalism have profound implications for PR. "New" PR needs to meet the needs of digital journalissts by providing resources to help them deliver the news faster, smarter and in every social media and traditional format.

4 Things Marketers Should Know About Tumblr

4 Things Marketers Should Know About Tumblr | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

With 105 million blogs and 49 billion posts, Tumblr, the free blog hosting and social networking site, is the 32ndmost popular site in the world. So if you’re not using Tumblr as part of your marketing efforts, you’re missing a very large boat.

“Tumblr isn’t a blog platform like WordPress; it’s a social network that has a blogging platform.” says Neil Patel, co-founder of the Web analytics firm KISSmetrics. “The beautiful thing about Tumblr is that it makes it really easy to share your content with millions of Tumblr users… so you can get a big audience without spending a ton of money on marketing.” Here are Neil’s tips for marketing your business on Tumblr....

Sneak Peek: Babblr Readies A Real-Time Chat Client For Tumblr | TechCrunch

Sneak Peek: Babblr Readies A Real-Time Chat Client For Tumblr | TechCrunch | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

If Tumblr is more of a social network than a blogging platform, then Babblr may be just the thing that its users are clamoring for: It's an integrated chat client for the platform that lets you communicate with your Tumblr friends and followers...

... After authenticating with Tumblr, the Babblr interface shows you a list of followers and those you’re following, and lets you initiate instant messaging-like chats with others on Babblr. You can also organize your followers into groups, which is useful for those with larger communities, or who just want to have more directed conversations. The messaging app is designed to be family-friendly, too, as it censors curse words by turning them into silly or nonsense phrases like “fudge this” or “schmeggs.” (The F word and S word, respectively.)

The Babblr team has been working on the client for about six months, and as of two months ago, they allowed people to discover it on their own through search and other posted links, in order to try it out....

Jeff Domansky's insight:

If you're on Tumblr, you'll want to explore Babblr.

I found this rather interesting because I love tumblr, and I think it would be fun to communicate with your fallowers rather than messaging them.
Jeff Domansky's comment, April 10, 2:32 PM
Totally agree SL. It's always better to connect directly where possible.

More Teens Use Tumblr than Facebook | MediaPost

More Teens Use Tumblr than Facebook | MediaPost | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

Could Facebook ever go the way of MySpace? Given its ubiquity and continued growth around the world, that may seem unlikely, but here’s an interesting fact to consider: more 10th graders are using Tumblr than Facebook, according to a survey of 1,038 teens and young adults conducted by blogger and techie Garry Tan.

Tan used Survata to poll 546 teens ages 13-18 and 492 young adults ages 19-25 about their social media usage. Tan found that while 55% of the younger age group said they use Facebook, 61% said they use Tumblr. Meanwhile 22% said they use Twitter, 21% use Instagram, and 13% use Snapchat....

Jeff Domansky's insight:

This was a really interesting stat and good reminder to consider the demographic differences between each social media channel you're considering as part of a program...

Tumblr’s Continued Growth Makes It a Search Factor

Tumblr’s Continued Growth Makes It a Search Factor | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

Has Tumblr become a part of your corporate publishing strategy? At one point, as Twitter and Facebook took off, it seemed that this “blog-network” platform (my term for something that isn’t as full-featured as WordPress or other software but definitely more feature-filled than a true social network) was going to be overshadowed by those ascendant networks.

But in the last year or so Tumblr has staged a remarkable comeback, despite – maybe even because of – a handful of direct competitors that sought to fill the “just let me post something quickly to my friends” space.

comScore recently released a study showing total unique visitors to Tumblr.com have grown significantly in the last year while the growth on mobile, which is a big way people consume and interact with those they follow, has grown even more sharply. And the number of clicks to Tumblr sites that are happening through search is even greater....

5 Brands Using Tumblr Effectively

5 Brands Using Tumblr Effectively | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

It may not seem as glamorous as big networks like Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest, but with over 50 million users and 20 billion posts, it is unwise to overlook Tumblr as an effective medium for brands. On the surface, one might assume that Tumblr is just a place for One Direction fangirls to share each other’s crushes through reblogs and likes.

The channel catches a lot of flack for not creating much unique content (it is trying to remedy this perception through the creative collaboration that is Reblorg), but it is actually a thriving community. Tumblr reaches a much larger demographic than you might imagine, as seen in Ignite Social Media’s 2012 Social Network Analysis. Many brands are utilizing the channel with incredible effectiveness, possibly implying that more brands should follow suit.

Before we start listing off some spectacular branded Tumblr blogs, there are a few things you should know about the platform....

Timing is Everything: Tumblr | Social Media Today

Timing is Everything: Tumblr | Social Media Today | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it
If you're looking for better results from your social media strategy, finding the right time to post to your social networks is a huge step forward both in terms of maximizing your reach potential and growing your online audience.

Twitter and Facebook have a corresponding pattern of usage. If you want your tweets or posts to receive the maximum amount of impressions, it is recommended by almost every social media expert to publish them between 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. EST, Monday through Thursday. Tumblr, however, because of its significantly different age demographic, has a "drastically different pattern of usage", bitly says.

To maximize your impact, you should try your best to post mainly at night. The optimal time to post on Tumblr, according to bitly, is between the hours of 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. EST on Monday through Thursday, not including just about anytime on Sunday. According to click-thru research, it is strongly suggested you match your post schedule around that of a high school or college student’s schedule, as the 13-24 age demographic indubitably makes up the largest percentage of Tumblr users. Whereas Facebook is very fast paced in usage patterns, the majority of Tumblr users tend to visit the platform with the intention of staying awhile, easily making it one of the most engaging social sites in the world....
