Twitter now bills itself as a news app, not a social network - Digiday

Twitter now bills itself as a news app, not a social network - Digiday | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it
Eagle-eyed Twitter users have noticed that it’s now categorizing itself very differently in the Apple App Store.

In an update yesterday, Twitter now sits in the News category rather than Social Networking. The move shifts it away from its competitors like Facebook, Snapchat and Kik. The switch boosted the app from sixth place in Social Networking to first place within News, according to App Annie.

But why? Twitter didn’t immediately respond for comment, but the change is a quick way to boost its visibility within the App Store’s rankings and bring in new users.
Jeff Domansky's insight:

This is an odd move by Twitter. I don't think it will help attract new users but rather confuse its loyal user base. It isn't just a news app although it's very good at that. In many respects, this move is guaranteed to push away the younger demographic.

Authentic 100

Authentic 100 | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

Since 2012, Cohn & Wolfe has studied authenticity as a guiding principle and business practice. Each year, our research reveals more insight on the strategic power of authenticity and its unique opportunity to build reputation.

Cohn & Wolfe has discovered a huge authenticity gap in the eyes of global consumers. With 75 percent of consumers surveyed in 14 markets believing that companies are not open and transparent, it’s clear that brands have a credibility problem.

Our 2016 findings reveal that cynicism towards brands is highest among Western European countries, while high growth / low per capita GDP countries recognize authenticity in brands the most.

Across global markets, approximately one in five consumers finds brands “Open and Honest.” At 23 percent, the US places just above the global average. In Western Europe, a mere 5 percent of consumers in Sweden consider companies “Open and Honest,” while the UK, France, Germany and Spain all match the same low level at 7 percent.

Brazil, while generally higher than Western Europe, is still lower than the US at 19 percent.

Even in China and Indonesia, where consumers are least pessimistic about brand authenticity, only about a third of the population (36 percent and 35 percent, respectively) consider companies “Open and Honest.”

The opportunity for businesses to close this gap is staggering....

Jeff Domansky's insight:

Interesting report by Cohn & Wolfe provides insight into consumer views of authenticity, global brands and what brands might do to close the gap in the future. Recommended reading. 9/10

Built for mobile: Bumper ads drive incremental reach and frequency, particularly on smartphones

Built for mobile: Bumper ads drive incremental reach and frequency, particularly on smartphones | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

Recent research has shown that half of 18-49 year olds turn to their mobile device first to watch video. Even in the living room, many people prefer to watch on their smartphone – for the control, personalization and ease it offers. And as viewing habits change, we are working to introduce new formats adapted to these habits.

That’s why today we’re announcing Bumper ads – a new six-second video format, sold through the AdWords auction on a CPM basis. Bumper ads are ideal for driving incremental reach and frequency, especially on mobile, where “snackable videos” perform well.

Given the succinct nature of the format, we’ve seen Bumper ads work best when combined with a TrueView or Google Preferred campaign. In early tests, Bumpers drove strong lift in upper funnel metrics like recall, awareness and consideration. We also see that Bumpers work well to drive incremental reach and frequency when paired with a TrueView campaign....

Jeff Domansky's insight:

Are bumper ads like little haiku video moments? Or, are they just another intrusion on YouTube viewers? The difference as always, is in the execution. Atlantic records and Volkswagen seem to get it right initially.

Introducing Hover, An AI-Powered Indoor-Safe Camera Drone

Introducing Hover, An AI-Powered Indoor-Safe Camera Drone | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

MMost popular consumer drones are affordable quadcopters robust enough to fly outdoors and snap photos or video. But they don’t work very well inside buildings. The startup Zero Zero Robotics is coming out of stealth mode to announce its first product, Hover Camera, a small drone specifically designed with no exposed propellers to safely shoot footage indoors.

Hover does exactly what it sounds like: Turn it on and it hovers in midair wherever you leave it. Hover is more a flying camera than a joyriding drone, and the controls on its paired smartphone app are for delicately repositioning it, not zooming to atrial heights. But the real breakthrough feature is its sophisticated AI programming that not only keeps the platform exceedingly leve, it uses face and body recognition to lock on to a subject and slowly follow them around autonomously.

"We had a few design goals in mind: Create a personal flying camera that’s portable and very safe, but also super easy to use for everyone," says the CEO and founder of Zero Zero Robotics, Meng Qiu Wang. "Most of the drones on the market fall short in these three aspects. We wanted to up the game to the next level...."

Jeff Domansky's insight:

Cool tool and interesting marketing possibilities with this indoor-safe camera drone.

10 Myths about YouTube Users [Infographic] | Daily Infographic

10 Myths about YouTube Users [Infographic] | Daily Infographic | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

I was recently offered a free cable subscription and I said “Why? I don’t have a TV, and all my shows are on YouTube.” I would like to think that none of the stereotypes listed here apply to me. Fortunately, usage statistics can shed light on the reality of negative stereotypes of YouTube users.

The stereotypes in this infographic are really stereotypes of internet users, or Internauts, in general. I think these negative generalizations came out of the fact that computers were largely marketed as toys for boys when personal computers were first coming out. Of course, computers, and the internet, are much, much more than that, but when people kept interacting with this thing that had been presented as a toy, it was interpreted by the wider public as immature and unhealthy.

As this infographic on the growth of the internet shows, internet
