Where Marketing Metrics Go Wrong | Marketo

Where Marketing Metrics Go Wrong | Marketo | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it
Here are some top analytics to avoid when measuring marketing ROI and proving revenue.

I recently wrote about how to build a data-driven marketing team. But what metrics should that team track? There are literally hundreds if not thousands of possible marketing management metrics to choose from, and almost all of them measure something of some kind of value. The problem is that most of them relate very little to the revenue and profitability metrics that concern the CEO, CFO and the board....

Here are the top categories of metrics to avoid....
Jeff Domansky's insight:

Jon Miller shares valuable tips on what metrics NOT to measure.

Atavist Redesign Turns Long-Form Portal Into Magic Word Processor

Atavist Redesign Turns Long-Form Portal Into Magic Word Processor | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

What has always set Atavist apart from other online publishers, though, is the singular care with which that story was being presented, regardless of the platform on which it was being experienced. "When we started The Atavist, there was no one thinking about how to design and tell a story online," explains Ratliff.

"Even if you had a great idea about how to tell a story through design, you needed a developer to execute it. So we tried to build the platform to let nondevelopers make beautiful stories without programming the software themselves."

That was the magic of the Atavist platform, which made it easy for writers to not just compose their stories, but design them as a proper multimedia, multidevice experience. So when The Atavist became a hit—it has been nominated for eight National Magazine Awards, winning this year for Feature Writing, and 11 of its stories have been optioned for big-screen treatment by Hollywood—Ratliff and his colleagues decided to spin the platform out as its own product, the Creativist, which anyone could use to tell beautiful stories and then publish on the web or through the Creativist app. And now, in turn, the Creativist is rolling itself back into Atavist as a single cohesive platform....

Jeff Domansky's insight:

Launching today, the new Atavist could just be the most beautiful and powerful way to write on the web. Writers should check it out.

How PR is seizing the advantage in content marketing

How PR is seizing the advantage in content marketing | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

A couple of weeks ago my colleague Tony wrote about the importance of content in marketing, and how a return to the art of storytelling would be one of the big stories of 2015 come year end.

This is a subject I wanted to follow up on, partly because we’ve been getting a lot of interest lately from clients looking to invest in content-based agencies, and also because here at Green Square we’re all in agreement that content marketing is as much a part of the future of marketing as data and mobile.

This is particularly the case in PR, which of all marketing disciplines has put itself forward as the custodian of content for brands; it has always been closest to journalism as well....

55 Extremely Creative and Beautiful Logo Designs for Inspiration

55 Extremely Creative and Beautiful Logo Designs for Inspiration | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

Logo design holds a very important role in the promotion of any brand. A logo is the main identity of an individual or a corporation. The logo design process is very complicated as it requires incorporating the complete image of a person or a company into one single image that would be used for this purpose for years.

A logo must be creative, otherwise it won’t stay in the minds of the viewers and thus, the brand would be forgotten too. A logo may be predefined or exaggerated depending on the need of the client. But the most important thing in logo designing is the, “less is more” strategy...

50+Ways - How to find Story Ideas

50+Ways - How to find Story Ideas | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

Every story had to have some moment that was there to amuse me — a funny moment, an emotional moment, some original observation I’d made on the scene that no other reporter had. It could just be a nice moment in the script. Every story had to have someone who was more than a talking head, spouting out their point of view on the issue of the day.

To make them more human, it sometimes only took a line of description, an original thought about who they were and why they believed what they believed, a surprising moment, a funny moment on tape.If you cannot find a deep interest in the story to begin with, that's a warning since. As Pixar Filmmaker Andrew Stanton advises in his TED Talk on The Clues to a Great Story:

And that's the first story lesson I ever learned. Use what you know. Draw from it. It doesn't always mean plot or fact. It means capturing a truth from your experiencing it, expressing values you personally feel deep down in your core....

Which Online Marketing Channel Should You Prioritize? | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

When it comes to online marketing effectiveness and driving both traffic and conversions to a website, brands have plenty of options to choose from: direct traffic, organic vs. paid search, email, social media, display banners, referral traffic, etc.

But these channels don’t necessarily have the same level of effectiveness, depending on whether we are a small, medium or large organization. Results will also vary greatly depending on which industry we may evolve in – brand paid search may work well in travel but less so in sports or home and garden, for example....

In 1975 only 175 corporations had lobbyists, but by 1982 nearly 2500 companies did.

This story will explain how big business used government to get 4 major tax reductions, modifying or terminating New Deal laws, to create new laws that favored the big banks and the wealthy, to change or rewrite labor laws that would help them bust unions, to negotiate trade agreements that favored the multi-national corporations over labor, and to pressure the government to ignore the trade deficit and foreign currency manipulation.
