New Yorker Cartoons for Valentine’s Day - The New Yorker | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

On Valentine’s Day, it’s important to tell the people you love that you don’t believe in the concept of true love, and that you expect your relationship to crumble with time, as all things do. Just kidding! You should tell the people you love that you’ll never leave their side, and plan to be buried alive next to them when they die. Actually, that’s probably not a good idea, either. Maybe just tell the people you love that you love them, and show them some Valentine’s Day cartoons.

I need to stop being in love with the ideas of what could have been. We could have slowly inched closer and held each other a little tighter. We could have laughed a little harder and fallen in love some more. There are so many things that could have happened, but didn’t. We almost were. We almost weren’t. We almost happened. Cupid almost won. But he didn’t. And we didn’t either.

Influencer Marketing Is Rapidly Gaining Popularity Among Brand Marketers - eMarketer | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

As concerns about ad blocking grow, influencer marketing is becoming more important to brands. YouTube, Instagram and Snapchat have become popular channels, and new tools are making it easier to work with influencers, as explored in a new eMarketer report, “Influencer Marketing for US Brands: The Platforms to Watch, and the Best Ways to Work with Creators.”

Digital agency executives also report rising interest in influencer marketing among their clients.“Influencers are such an important part of what brands are doing today,” said Greg Manago, co-president of content and entertainment for North America at Mindshare.

“The question [from clients] isn’t, ‘We want to do something with influencers; what do you think?’ It’s, ‘What’s the influencer strategy for this program?’”...

Jeff Domansky's insight:

Giving influencers creative freedom and striving for a symbiotic relationship are keys to success.

Quartz Debuts New Format For News App

Quartz Debuts New Format For News App | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

Quartz released its first news app Thursday, available exclusively on iPhones. The interface isn’t like your usual news app -- instead, it’s like iMessage for news.Quartz, the 4-year-old business news publication owned by Atlantic Media, announced in a post on its Web site  that the app is an “ongoing conversation about the news, sort of like texting.”

The app sends messages, photos, GIFs and links to users, who can tap to respond when interested in learning more about a topic. Each session lasts just a few minutes.

But Quartz’s app isn’t like Siri; it’s not an automated assistant. Instead, the responses are written by a team of Quartz writers and editors, led by Adam Pasick. According to The Verge, it’s the same team who are in charge of the company's "Daily Brief" newsletter....

Companies Must Adapt Internal Communication as Demographics Change, Baylor Study Finds | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

Neill said that a number of trends “indicate a move to a more strategic role for internal communication and more dialogue with employees rather than one-way communication.” Those developments include:
• Organizational structural changes. For most companies and organizations that participated in the study, a communications or public relations department leads their internal communications, with human resources professionals collaborating closely.
• Generational shifts. The loss of baby boomers in the workplace means losing years of experience. Millennials have different communication expectations from their employers, such as mobile communication and short messages. Companies and organizations are learning to communicate with brevity and easy access through channels such as internal social media....

Shield 5 is a captivating new thriller that follows a wrongfully accused man on the run, desperate to clear his name. It has a lot in common with shows like Homeland and 24, except for one tiny thing: Each episode is only 15 seconds long.

Shield 5 is a new dramatic and cinematic series being released on Instagram in installments, just one recent example of what is being labeled as "social cinema." It is the brainchild of British director Anthony Wilcox, who was looking for a quick project to work on while he finished developing a bigger feature. "I’ve done a few short things online as a director-for-hire, and the fast turnaround of those things excited me. I was looking for a way to do that, but telling my own story," Wilcox told Fast Company....

Newspapers Trail As Political News Sources

Newspapers Trail As Political News Sources | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

Inspiring equal parts awe and horror, the quadrennial orgy of spin, lies and patriotic pablum that is the U.S. presidential election is obviously a news bonanza. But that doesn’t mean every news medium benefits equally. According to a new report from Pew Research Center, newspapers are lagging far behind other providers as a source of political news.

According to Pew, 91% of American adults received some news about the presidential election in the last week (the other 9% presumably being the fabled “low information” or “no information” voters).  When it came to specific news providers, 24% of respondents said they considered cable TV news the “most helpful” source of information, followed by social media at 14%, local TV also at 14%, Web sites or apps, at 13%, and radio at 11%.

Further down the totem pole were network nightly news, at 10% and late-night TV comedy at 3%. Only then did the local newspaper appear in the Pew ranking, equal with late-night comedy at 3%. National newspapers were even lower down, cited by just 2% of respondents as the most helpful source of political news....

Jeff Domansky's insight:

Cable TV is leading as the primary source of news about the presidential election at 24% followed by social media at 14%? I'm really surprised that social media isn't a bigger source.

How DHL Pioneered The Sharing Economy

How DHL Pioneered The Sharing Economy | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it
Global delivery company DHL started its business by offering free plane tickets to people on the street. For the trouble of giving up their baggage allowances, passengers were handed a free round-trip plane ticket to Hawaii.

Founded as a courier service in 1969, DHL used the spare capacity in travelers’ luggage to transport high-value documents. To understand why it made sense for DHL to provide free tickets to travelers, it helps to understand the massive changes entailed by the containerization of ocean cargo in the 1960s.

Digital Media's Consumption Growth Slowing; So Is Traditional's Decline

Digital Media's Consumption Growth Slowing; So Is Traditional's Decline | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

Digital media’s consumption growth rate in the U.S. continued to slow last year, while the rate of decline in traditional media use (dominated by television, of course) also slowed.

Driven by higher smartphone and tablet penetration, new gaming console launches, and the draw of major political and sporting events, U.S. digital media usage rose 7.1%, to 18 hours per week, in 2015, according to PQ Media’s Global Consumer Media Usage & Exposure Forecast 2015-19.

Tahat's lower than the 9.6% increase in digital media usage in 2014 (to 16.8 hours per week). Further, the projected compound annual growth rate (CAGR) from 2015 through 2019 -- 7.3% -- is barely above 2015’s growth rate. That CAGR will result in an average 23.9 hours per week of digital media consumption by 2019....

Uber, your new logo is a mistake and looks like JPMorgan's

Uber, your new logo is a mistake and looks like JPMorgan's | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

Earlier this month, Uber unveiled a new look, including, among other things, a new app logo. In a complete departure from its original icon featuring a stylized “U,” the new icon is a non-distinct image of a square embedded in a circle (in rider apps) or a hexagon (in partner apps).

According to Uber, the square represents the bit (as in the basic unit of information in computing) — a concept central to Uber’s business philosophy.Uber argues that its new look would “…provide consistency, highlight information and make our brand easy to recognize.” While Uber’s new logotype and website design might be aligned with this goal, its new app logo is not; the new logo is far less recognizable as representing the Uber brand than the one it replaced....

Jeff Domansky's insight:

Some say: Don't replace the stylized white and black “U” for the “atom and bit.” I actually like it.
