In an attempt to open up a new revenue stream for shareholders the social network is bringing videos to the newsfeed. ...Brands on Facebook's client council, which include Coca-Cola, Ford, Unilever and Diageo are expected to take part in trials, but the worry is that users may find the experience so disruptive that they stop visiting the site and move to other social networks. According to one report last week, Facebook's user numbers are already in decline, despite the firm's numerous attempts to keep its users engaged, on mobile and elsewhere. Of course, it's no secret why Facebook is keen on videos: they drive online product sales. According to Joyus founder and ex-Googler Sukhinder Singh Cassidy, people are five times as likely to buy something from a video ad than from a picture on an e-commerce site, and buy five times as often....
For a presentation, I gathered some Facebook EdgeRank infographics and thought I should post them here as well. It's interesting to consider why Facebook treats video content with so little love....
Facebook - the world's largest social network - is losing millions of users each month. Experts say Facebook's popularity may have peaked, with jaded users joining newer social media sites. In the last six months, Facebook has lost nearly 9million monthly visitors in the US and 2million in the UK. Experts say as new social media sites grow, Facebook's users are deserting the network. They say that figures aren't helped by the lack of new Facebook members. It is believed that most people who want to sign up to the site have already done so. New media specialist Ian Maude said the fall in numbers was due to 'a boredom factor'. It is believed there is stagnation as most people who want to join the site have already done so 'The problem is that, in the US and UK, most people who want to sign up for Facebook have already done it. 'People like to try something new. Is Facebook going to go the way of Myspace? 'The risk is relatively small, but that is not to say it isn't there.'...

According to Piper Jaffray's latest teen survey, young users are moving away from traditional social networks. So where are they going? Click here to find out. Used to be, you could tell someone was over-the-hill if they were hitting you up via email instead of text or Facebook. Now, according to a recent Piper Jaffray survey, the demarcation line has shifted, as Zuck&Co’s popularity seems to be sliding among the teen set. This should surprise no one. Facebook saturation is at an all-time high, particularly among grown-ups, and whenever moms, dads and decidedly untech-savvy aunties start getting in on something, that’s a big sign that teenagers are going to start hitting the exits. In fact, the migration has already begun. The report reveals 10 percent fewer teens consider the network the “most important” social media site these days compared to a year ago....
Typical Facebook. You wait for a new or significant change to emerge and then all of a sudden, a number of them are revealed at once. It has a habit of announcing new features shortly after it holds a major event like its new page redesign. Now that’s been followed by a number of new additions and changes to desktop, mobile and its advertising product, which you may or may not have kept up with. Since it’s been an eventful month for the social media network, here’s what you need to know.

...Today I am surrendering my Facebook account, because my participation on the site is simply too inconsistent with the values I espouse in my work. In my upcoming book Present Shock, I chronicle some of what happens when we can no longer manage our many online presences. I argue - as I always have - for engaging with technology as conscious human beings, and dispensing with technologies that take that agency away. Facebook is just such a technology. It does things on our behalf when we're not even there. It actively misrepresents us to our friends, and - worse - misrepresents those who have befriended us to still others. To enable this dysfunctional situation -- I call it “digiphrenia” -- would be at the very least hypocritical. But to participate on Facebook as an author, in a way specifically intended to draw out the "likes" and resulting vulnerability of others, is untenable. Facebook has never been merely a social platform. Rather, it exploits our social interactions the way a Tupperware party does. Facebook does not exist to help us make friends, but to turn our network of connections, brand preferences, and activities over time -- our "social graphs" -- into a commodity for others to exploit....

However, this new change to Facebook holds some definite promise for helping businesses boost their reach via this social media platform....

It's time for Facebook fundamentals. Remember: The purpose of your Facebook page is not to sell stuff to people, it’s to engage them. There’s a digital divide in the small-business world—between those companies that know how to use social networks like Facebook FB +0.52% and those that don’t have a clue. If you’re on the clueless side, it’s not too late. You can learn. First, before you even begin a Facebook presence for your business, you need three things, says Ramon Ray, founder of SmallBizTechnology.com and author of The Facebook Guide to Small Business Marketing. You need an appealing website, you need fresh content on your site regularly, and you need email marketing or some other mechanism to capture customer email addresses....
There isn't anything worse than checking a website and clicking their Facebook link to find that they've redirected you to a personal page. Not only do you have to hope they accept you as a "friend," you're taken through one more step to see their content and find their real Fan Page. I hate this! Here are the top 15 reasons to have a Fan Page, and not a personal page, attached to your business....
Facebook recently launched a new feature which has been used by a number or high-profile journalists in order to host conversations. The feature is currently being rolled out, and all Facebook pages will get the option by 10 July, as will all individual accounts where the person has more than 10,000 followers. In a similar way to a Reddit AMA (ask me anything), a person or page can take questions in real-time. The Q&A feature was announced on 25 March, and has since been used by Arianna Huffington, ABC News anchor Diane Sawyer, and CBS News senior correspondent and former FBI spokesman John Miller, who did a live Facebook Q&A about the investigation into the Boston marathon bombings....

Pinterest has a higher concentration of people who are in a ‘buy’ state of mind, while Facebook users are more interested in interacting with friends - and brands.... Understanding what people do on different social networks is the key to effectively using those networks for marketing. Companies currently spend 8.4% of their marketing budgets on social media, and that’s expected to grow to 21.6% in the next five years. But with so many social networks competing to grab marketing dollars, determining the most effective channels can be extremely difficult. To illustrate, let’s look at how Facebook and Pinterest stack up against one another. Different Networks For Different Reasons While both Facebook and Pinterest offer deep customer segmentations and user engagement, it would be a mistake to target audiences in the same way across both networks. For example, you wouldn’t market your product to someone shopping at a trendy boutique the same way you would to someone walking down the street with their friends. In a store, you’d likely look to make a sale, while on the street you’d probably have more luck building brand awareness....
... Today, Facebook offers businesses several ways to market themselves. The first option is to create a Facebook page about their business and use it to blast out brand messaging via posts to users who like their page. This is an option that many businesses have chosen and has become the talking point across all professionals. The second option is to run paid advertising via Facebook ads. These ads can drive on-site (to generate likes for the business’ Facebook page or engagement with prior page posts) or off-site (to drive traffic to a webpage off of Facebook). Looking at it this way, the opportunities on Facebook are rather black and white, though each one offers a complex set of opportunities and strategic implications. It is one site online (with a tremendous amount of traffic) brands can use in their marketing plans. Sounds simple enough, right? Wrong. This is where the Facebook Problem comes into play. The main part of the Facebook Problem is that brands have forgotten about integrated marketing communications. Marketers are guilty here....
Facebook on Wednesday rolled out a new feature that lets brands target users for status updates that don't appear on their brand Pages. The intent is to let brands target a subset of customers without alienating other members of its customer base. For example, a sporting goods brand could run a post appealing to basketball fans. While the post wouldn't appear on the brand's Page, it would run in the News Feed of fans who have an affinity for the sport. Other scenarios include a telecom carrier that wanted to target possible switchers (perhaps fans who have shown an interest in a new model of phone) rather than send a more general branding message to its overall fan population. Finally, the unit can be used for A/B testing of ads. In other words, a marketer can run two or more different messages and then see which ones do the best....
An estimated 67 percent of American adults use Facebook today. That makes the social media giant on the surface the best channel for small business owners to connect with their clients, customers and partners. But there are reasons to rethink Facebook engagement. Those reasons include signs some users are getting tired of the site. The social network is completing a new redesign intended to reignite the spark with its audience. However, it could be too little too late. Re-evaluating Facebook Engagement Small business owners need to be concerned about “Facebook fatigue” too. It means that the audience they are trying to reach may be vacating the site, rendering marketers’ efforts fruitless. Below are four reasons you may want to reconsider the value of your Facebook engagement....
...The business side of Facebook boomed in the personality of a Facebook brand page. This serves as the go-to social marketing move for every brand out there, no matter how big or small. Imagine posting your latest marketing pitch in real time and being able to target your consumers by using insight provided on your Facebook brand page. I recently watched a tutorial video from Hootsuite that featured Jason Li. It was all about how you can build a strong, effective Facebook brand page. Let me share with you the things I learned after watching this video. These four steps may sound cliche to some people, but as the old saying goes “the simplest answer is usually the right one.” Allow me to discuss this briefly. I would love to hear your suggestions for building a strong Facebook brand page....
Now that we're past waiting for the 'year of mobile' to hit and are now well and truly in it, it's time for organisations to look at their business strategy and decide just how much time and budget mobile is going to get. ...The implications of being ‘mobile first’ as a company extend way beyond having a mobile-optimised site, or a snazzy app that’s available across multiple devices. The way in which we use mobile means a change in the way we access and store information, communicate, work, socialise and research, and necessitates a change in the technology your business relies on. IBM has most recently demonstrated this with the launch of its mobile first strategy. To show how serious it is, it’s even dubbed the strategy ‘MobileFirst’ in case there was any doubt about the direction it’s taking....
