What to Know Before Creating a Content Marketing Strategy | Cision | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

A week into 2014, Mark Schaefer published a blog post that questioned whether content marketing – which he termed “the hottest marketing trend around” – was a sustainable strategy for businesses.

He coined “content shock” and argued that though more and more businesses give away more and more content, people have only finite time to consume it.Is this the end of content marketing? Hardly. It means brands will have to invest in content creation....

Jeff Domansky's insight:

Content marketing is alive and well...it's just changing. If you want to start a content marketing strategy or refine an existing campaign, follow these tips.

Is SEO Simply Good Writing? | @MarkWSchaefer | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

So, instead of focusing on the popular SEO practices of the day, I doubled down on highly valuable content. It turns out that was the correct strategy. Every single algorithmic change Google has implemented between 2008 and today has rewarded my content-centric approach and torpedoed the SEO link wrestling game.

Now, everybody is catching up to that reality. SEO is turning to content creation as a means to their end. An SEO professional recently remarked to me what a great job I was doing with SEO. I protested. “I don’t have a systematic strategy,” I said. “I’m just producing great content.”...

Using the right Instagram hashtags can extend the reach of your images, and help you reach outside your current sphere of followers..

But which hashtags should you use?  There are two schools of thought on this one: The first is that you should use hyper-popular hashtags that get searched for most often. The good part about using popular hashtags is that you know tons of people are searching for them. And the bad part? Tons of people are searching for them. In other words, because so many people are using them, it can be more difficult for your photo to get noticed....

Perhaps your business is telling great stories, too.

While it’s wonderful to talk about yourself, your story about customer service, or your family story about overcoming odds, what you really have to ask yourself when it comes to effective storytelling is what your audience is also asking:“What’s in it for me?

If you really think about it, the editorial process has quite a few steps -- from ideation, to concepting, to production, to proofreading, editing and copyediting. Unfortunately, it's that last part that often gets undermined, rushed through, or altogether just swept aside as writers and content creators hurry to get content out the door. But if you really want to ship remarkable, high-quality content, you can't afford to overlook the proofreading and editing process. ...

George Athan's curator insight, April 23, 6:09 PM

It's important to realize that many people reading this will be behind the trend and chasing it without seeing results. Think about previous years when you heard how important it was to build your email list. If you jumped on that trend then you realized that by the time you built a big enough list to mean anything, that has become less effective.

Next you were told how Social Media was going to make a break your business. Many people chasing that trend did not reap the rewards they anticipated. Why? Is it because social media marketing isn't effective? Is it that the gurus were wrong when they told you that without SEO nobody would find your website? No. It's about timing. Just like this article when it's focusing on everyone's excitement of content marketing. What happens when EVERYONE focuses on content marketing? Just like everything else.. it becomes clutter and noise. Does this mean not to create valuable content for readers to consume? Absolutely not. My message to you is to get ahead of the trends, not follow them.

The next trend is video. Create as many videos and as much content as you can. These assets will dominate in the next 3 years when everyone is sick of reading all this content.

When I need inspiration for content that delights, email campaigns that actually work, and social media interactions that are genuinely fun ... I turn to one source: an online clothing store called ModCloth. My closet is proof that their marketing works. (Perhaps a little too well.) And watching them grow has been a master class in what a customer-driven company should look like.
Ask any inbound marketer, and most will name a company whose marketing inspires them like ModCloth inspires me. One they turn to when they need to re-ignite their fires, so to speak.

For this post, that's exactly what I did, with a particular focus on blogs. I asked other inbound marketers to name companies they think are rocking their blogs the way we'd all like to. I left out the obvious suspects -- we all know Moz, KISSmetrics, and other, similar are amazing at the whole inbound thing. But if I’ve left out your favorite company, please share it in the comments or on our thread on Inbound.org.
