According to a recently conducted study by VidYard and Demand Metrics, video marketing is the most effective marketing option available today.  In addition, the return on investment provided by video marketing is improving, according to 48% of the respondents.  While it is certainly no surprise that video marketing is an excellent resource, this study really just shows how important it is.


The effectiveness of video has not been lost on successful marketing companies.  The report found that over a third of large companies are producing over 100 marketing videos each year. They also found that 86% of those surveyed use key tools to measure the effectiveness of their video marketing efforts, which further shows that the ROI on video is real....

...This is the formula for building a business: You figure out how you are creating value. You identify a set of operations that repeatedly create value. You figure out a way to efficiently conduct these operations repeatedly.

There are three broad ways that businesses conduct these operations repeatedly and get things done:

  1. Get employees to do the work.
  2. Get algorithms to do the work.
  3. Get users to do the work.

Let’s think through the problem of navigating the web for the most relevant information of the day. Three companies try to solve this in three very different ways:

  1. Yahoo: A bunch of editors decide the best content for the day.
  2. Google News: Algorithms decide the top news of the day.
  3. Twitter: Users’ tweets and retweets decide the top news of the day.

For those of us who read the earlier article on the three broad models for problem-solving, here’s the interesting part. These three approaches correspond exactly with the three models for problem solving....

The gradual radicalization of Douglas McAuthur McCain, we're told, is reflected in his social-media timelines. This week, NBC News  reported that McCain, a 33-year-old from Minneapolis and San Diego, had become the first American to die in Syria while fighting for the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), in clashes with other rebel fighters.


(On Thursday, Fox News reported that a second American from Minneapolis may have been killed while fighting for ISIS in the same battle.)


"Until early last year, a Twitter account linked to McCain included mostly mundane messages to friends about basketball—how the Lakers suck, comments about the Chicago Bulls—with only a few messages about Allah or Islam," NBC noted. "Then the account went silent for more than a year." 


McCain, who converted to Islam in 2004 and also appears to have used networks like Facebook and MySpace, fired up his feed again in mid-May—around the time that ISIS was publicizing its control over the Syrian city of Raqqa with public executions, and just weeks before the group launched its military offensive in northern Iraq....

Earlier this month, folks from Google invited me along with Kara Swisher and Audrey Cooper for a conversation about the future of news.


Towards the end of the conversation, we were asked what Google could do in order to help the news and media industry. Obviously, we joked about buying the New York Times, but when asked, I pointed out that Google is good at one thing — software — and instead of trying to do crazy things, why not build tools that help the news ecosystem? Why not create tools that help data novices make sense of information? Or how about a smarter, simpler and more nimble analytics tool just for reporters? (Or simply buy Chartbeat!)


I forgot to mention one tool that they could build in their sleep, and in the process help not only save many reporter hours but make the news better, smarter and more contextual.


That tool is search — not the Google search as we know it, but a different version of Google-powered search tool that allows reporters to see in real-time past stories from across the web. That’s not all — the search tool would also provide contextual information about various topics, whether through Wikipedia or some private archive like Lexis-Nexis. There is a crying need for this tool, especially in today’s hyperactive media environment....

In 1978, a 14-year-old boy invented email.He created a computer program, which he called "email," that replicated all the functions of the interoffice mail system: Inbox, Outbox, Folders, Memo, Attachments, Address Book, etc., the now familiar parts of every email system.


On August 30, 1982, the US government officially recognized V.A. Shiva Ayyadurai as the inventor of email by awarding him the first US Copyright for "Email," "Computer Program for Electronic Mail System," for his 1978 invention. This was awarded at a time when Copyright was the only way to protect software inventions.


Email, however, emerged from somewhat unlikely circumstances. Email wasn't created, with a massive research budget, in big institutions like the ARPANET, MIT or the military. Such institutions had thought it "impossible" to create such a system, believing it far too complex.Email was created in the heart of inner city Newark, NJ, at a relatively small institution, with little to no funding.


Shiva was given something that big institutions, however, may have found hard to provide: an ecosystem of loving parents, a wonderful mentor, dedicated teachers and a collegial environment where he was treated as an equal though his colleagues were 20 to 40 years older.In that ecosystem, Shiva thrived, and the world got email!...

Ten ways communication is changingchanging | Dazed Digital

Charting the rise of tech-infested communications – from pheromone parties to Narbs


Public scrutiny has tunneled hard on the shallowness of contemporary communication, as depicted in Nicholas Carr’s aptly-named 2010 book The Shallows. Carr writes passionately about humanity’s dwindling attention span, and rightly so – the internet has changed the way we handle information, and the gap between generations, especially regarding activities we deem “social” and entertaining, is only growing more pronounced.


Perhaps because of the mind-numbing nature of pop culture’s online lingua franca – memes – general consensus seems to indicate that the internet has had a detrimental effect on our attention spans. This is thanks to mechanical factors like hyperlinks, gifs, embedded video content, and other pretty things that help to add flavor and aesthetics to what would otherwise be a dry information dump. It's no longer sufficient to convey a message – the message has now become inextricably linked to the medium so much that the latter now obscures the former.


Through no fault of their own, the Carrs of the world don’t address the the bold, unrefined new forms of communication that evade categorisation: superdialects, extrasensory communication, and straight-up biotech developments that push our cognitive and linguistic potential into the realm of science fiction. Yes, it sucks that the printed word is threatened by the new frontier of interactive media, but in an ideal world, the two don’t need to be mutually exclusive realms.


Technology has simply expanded the tools we have at our disposal, and frankly, we’re all for modular means of everyday communication that allow for nonsense and idiocy. Let's take a look at ten communication trends on the horizon...

Smartphones. They’re all just a bunch ofundifferentiated rectangles, right? You’d be forgiven for feeling a little jaded about the rate of innovation in smartphones over the past couple of years. A 4-inch iPhone still dominates the consumer landscape, HTC is still designing beautiful but flawed masterpieces, and Samsung is still the world’s foremost purveyor of cheap plastic.


It’s as if we’ve been stuck in a long winter hibernation, waiting for the next wave of real excitement to awaken us to the awesome power and potential of smartphones. Look out to the horizon, however, and you may see that wave coming....

Unlike Microsoft, Samsung, Adobe, cellular carriers, or Wal-Mart-sized corporations, Apple handles its PR and Communications strategies wholly in-house, mirroring its control over its hardware and software strategies. While Apple still works with external agency Media Arts Lab of TBWA on print, digital, and TV marketing efforts, it is actively reducing its reliance on that firm by boosting its in-house marketing resources.


According to sources, Apple is “aggressively” poaching select members of Media Arts Lab for its in-house team, but not undertaking a full-on corporate raid.Though Apple is a gigantic and ever-growing company, its PR and Communications group is surprisingly tiny. There are only around over 30 PR employees in Apple’s Cupertino offices, with another few dozen-some individuals scattered around the world to organize events, translate press releases, and either answer or dodge questions from journalists in every time zone.


The Cupertino-based office is a wing on the third floor of Apple’s Product Marketing building, 3 Infinite Loop. Framed posters of vintage Apple advertisements decorate the area, which otherwise consists of plain white hallways with offices on either side, and two small common areas....

With all the talk about optimizing content for search engines, you'd think we'd know by now exactly what Google's ranking algorithm considers when crawling pages on the internet. But we don't, and we can't -- mainly because Google has never publicly listed all of the factors they take into account.


What Google has confirmed is that they use about 200 ranking signals when determining organic search page rankings. There are domain factors, page-level factors, site-level factors, backlink factors, user interaction, special algorithm rules, social signals, brand signals, on-site web spam factors, off-page web spam factors ... 


Whew! That's quite a list. How are we supposed to remember all of those? Thanks to Single Grain and Backlinko, we don't have to....

...It was a surprise to find when I checked my traffic that the blog post I had published 24 hours earlier had “gone”viral”. The article was titled, “30 Things You Should Not Share On Social Media“. It received over 122,000 views, was retweeted over 6,000 times and was shared on Facebook over 3,500 times.


A week later I posted it’s positive alternative, “20 Things you Should Share on Social Media“. The question in the back of my mind was…”would it receive the same viral traffic?”


The simple analysis after posting revealed that the positive version received only 16,000 views. Good but not great. And there lies a lesson that I have not forgotten.


Negative headlines work!


That was my first experience of viral content on my blog....

A recent article in The Economist, citing the work of Ryan Raffaelli at Harvard Business School, points to what it calls a “paradox” in the aftermath of disruptive innovation.


Some old technologies, after being rendered obsolete by better and cheaper alternatives (indeed even after whole industries based on them have been decimated), manage to “re-emerge” to the point that they sustain healthy businesses. Think mechanical Swiss watches, now enjoying strong sales. Or fountain pens, or vinyl records. Or small-batch, handmade goods — from vermouth to chocolate to pickles.


We could add our own favorite example: pinball. In our HBR article “Big Bang Disruption”, we describe the devastation of arcade pinball machines wrought in only a few years by Sony’s PlayStation home video console. From a historic high in 1993 of 130,000 machines sold, sales fell over 90% in the next five years. By the end of the decade, only one producer—Stern Pinball—was left making new machines, and with arcades closing daily, it looked as if it, too, would soon be facing game over....

...In the altogether illuminating 1994 volume The Psychology of Writing (public library), cognitive psychologist Roland T. Kellogg explores how work schedules, behavioral rituals, and writing environments affect the amount of time invested in trying to write and the degree to which that time is spent in a state of boredom, anxiety, or creative flow.


Kellogg writes:

"[There is] evidence that environments, schedules, and rituals restructure the writing process and amplify performance… The principles of memory retrieval suggest that certain practices should amplify performance. These practices encourage a state of flow rather than one of anxiety or boredom. Like strategies, these other aspects of a writer’s method may alleviate the difficulty of attentional overload. The room, time of day, or ritual selected for working may enable or even induce intense concentration or a favorable motivational or emotional state. Moreover, in accordance with encoding specificity, each of these aspects of method may trigger retrieval of ideas, facts, plans, and other relevant knowledge associated with the place, time, or frame of mind selected by the writer for work."...

Like most people I spend much of the day digitally connected, gazing at screens that make my life and work more interesting and productive. In this troubling scenario, the only reality we might experience will be artificial simulations inside helmets or goggles that prevent us from touching, seeing, feeling or interacting with a real person or object.


Fortunately, there’s an alternative digital future taking shape that I call Integral Reality, which combines the best of the digital and analog worlds. Integral Reality intertwines the wonders of the digital within the physicality of real things. With digital components embedded and invisible within objects, Integral Reality won’t separate us from the real world but instead promises to create emotionally engaging experiences with it.


This is already happening with the first wave of connected smart home appliances, like thermostats and air-conditioners, and wearable technologies that monitor health or physical activities. Consumers are getting their first taste of how unobtrusive sensors and aggregated data and connectivity between the physical and the digital can make their lives more comfortable, convenient and secure.
