Technology and marketing tactics have changed the game, but there are some Sterling/Cooper approaches we can apply to social media today.... ... I like to think of my Mad Men marathon as research. As I get further into the seasons, I am sure I will come across many more similarities between us and them. In some ways it’s comforting to see that, although we are rapidly moving towards a more digitally enhanced world, the core values stay the same. These are valuable messages that we can take away from Mad Men and apply to social media marketing today: Build Relationships, Know Your Audience and Be Creative. So next time you’re staring blankly at your screen, do yourself a favor. Pour a whisky, inhale some cigarette smoke and transport yourself into the office of Don Draper, but most importantly, get inspired....
Neon Luminance is a brilliant light painting concept created by photographers Sean Lenz and Kristoffer Abildgaard of From the Lenz multimedia productions. The duo used high-powered Cyalume glow sticks of various colors dropped into the waterfalls of Northern California to create an amazing pallet of light paintings. They were able to then capture these brilliant exposures varying from 30 seconds to 7 minutes of submerged trails of light as these sticks floated through the water current. To accomplish the rainbow-like effect seen, they combined several sticks together experimenting with different patterns of illumination. And for you environmentalists, don't worry no harm came to the surrounding nature in this process! The sticks which are buoyant, were never actually opened and all collected at the end of each exposure captured, thus eliminating any toxic gunk from entering the natural water supply....
The Kardashians are social media marketing and branding superstars. Here's how you can Keep Up with the Kardashians on your own social media networks.... Love them or hate them, the Kardashian family knows how to market themselves. Okay, so they have a reality TV show, or four, that helped propel them to the highest levels of fame. But they are still social media marketing and branding superstars. So here's how you can Keep Up With The Kardashians....
... Among his keen insights on the craft, synthesized from the interviews, is a theory of how the creative process works, outlining the four stages of writing: There would seem to be four stages in the composition of a story. First comes the germ of the story, then a period of more or less conscious meditation, then the first draft, and finally the revision, which may be simply ‘pencil work’ as John O’Hara calls it — that is, minor changes in wording — or may lead to writing several drafts and what amounts to a new work. Cowley illustrates each of the four stages with anecdotes from the interviewees....
This is probably the most exciting feet photo you've ever seen on Instagram. It was taken by National Geographic photographer Joe McNally from the top of the world's tallest skyscraper, the Burj Khalifa, in Dubai....
As I walked around SXSW and listened to the different presentations, I thought about how important it is to disengage from deadlines and commitments for a little while and consider new ideas and different perspectives. ... To escape gravity’s hold, we have to do more than just interact with what’s conveniently presented to us. We have to make concerted efforts to interact with the unknown, to follow connections and to explicitly indulge our curiosity. Less Facebook; more Wikipedia. For example, in a few minutes, and without even leaving Wikipedia, you can travel from the Tasmanian Devil to Tasmanian devils to Tasmanian tigers to thylacines to convergent evolution. And now you’ve just crossed the threshold from things to ideas, from the concrete noun “thylacine” to the idea of “convergent evolution.” That’s an important moment because now you can start to use that idea to think about other things: your business, your customers, your competitors, whatever. But, you can reach this moment only if you indulge your curiosity—interact with the unknown....
...I used to think: oh, hope, big deal. It couldn’t have been an invisibility cloak or the ability to teleport or a genie who looks like Keanu Reeves?
I have a new slant on that myth after reading Srinivasen S. Pillay’s remarkable book LIFE UNLOCKED, in which he draws from neuroscience to present strategies in overcoming fear. Some of the best life advice I ever got was this: Whenever you make a decision out of fear, you will regret it.I’ve applied that to writing, to relationships (and the end of relationships), to life. I’ve learned to separate my fears from my intuition and, at times, to follow my intuition through the fear.
At the Launch Conference in San Francisco today, Twitter co-founder Ev Williams took the stage to talk to conference founder Jason Calacanis about everything from his experience at Twitter and the rise of Vine to sharing his take on Google and Facebook as well as the latest from Medium, his latest effort to shape the future of digital publishing. For those unfamiliar, a serial entrepreneur, Williams has played a key role in helping to shape the way we create and share content on the Web, as the co-founder of Pyra Labs, which produced Blogger — and was bought by Google in 2003. In doing so, Williams is often credited with coining the term “blogger” and helping to popularize both the term “blog” and the medium itself. After leaving Google, Williams went on to co-found Odeo and “idea incubator” Obvious, which produced both Twitter and, most recently, Medium (among others)....
Two important but too-unsung women in media — performer Amanda Palmer and Google ad exec Susan Wojcicki — met at an idea this week: that media and advertising are becoming voluntary. They also touch on ideas I’ve been trying to write about: that media should be in the relationship business, not just the content business. In other words, media’s value isn’t necessarily intrinsic in content — as in, “you should pay for this product because the work to create it has value” — but can be realized in the relationships that form around content....
The demand for creativity from employees is rising in this age of rapid technological advancement.... Some of you may think that creativity is an inborn trait rather than something that can be learned and developed. This may be so, but without aconducive environment for creativity to be expressed, how can we expect to see ideas arising from creative employees? This is precisely what this article is about, to show you ways which you can adopt in the workplace to encourage employees to seek innovation in their work....
This is a collection of the most popular posters right now. I personally love posters and have a few movie-sized framed. If you like posters as much as me, you should really have a look at these 30. There are some really amazing artworks out there that’s been printed on posters. I think it’s really great of the artists to allow it, because they allow people without thousands of dollars to buy art. You can get a poster for $10 and up, however I’ve seen an old and rare poster go for a cool $690,000, but I think that’s outside our price range. That expensive poster was painted by a German artist by the name Heinz Schulz-Neudamm, he made it to promote the release of Fritz Lang’s groundbreaking 1927 film about a dystopian future in the year 2000....

It’s one of my favorite pieces of writing advice from Ray Bradbury, and it’s blindingly brilliant in its utter simplicity. If you want to identify the ideas you should write about, the themes you can write passionately and believably about, follow this advice: Make a list of ten things you love, ten things you hate, and ten things you fear. Write to celebrate the things you love, and write to destroy the things you hate and fear. Bradbury put it this way in an interview with his biographer, Sam Weller: “You can’t write for other people. You can’t write for the left or the right, this religion or that religion, or this belief or that belief. You have to write the way you see things. I tell people, Make a list of ten things you hate and tear them down in a short story or poem. Make a list of ten things you love and celebrate them. When I wrote Fahrenheit 451 I hated book burners and I loved libraries. So there you are.”...
I’m working on the followup to Steal Like An Artist, my book about how to be more creative in the digital age. It’s been a real pain in the ass. Here are five things that have helped: 1. Shut up and write the book.
Creating compelling visual imagery for your social media profiles has never been more important for your brand. ... graphic design plays an important role, not only in building brand awareness and recognition, but also attracting the user’s attention. In 1953, writers George Plimpton, Harold L. Humes, and Peter Matthiessen banded together to found The Paris Review, the famed magazine that gave voice to literary giants like Ernest Hemingway and Jack Kerouac. Today the formidable institution is celebrating an impressive 60 years in operation....
Failure: it's a common theme among start-up founders. In the Silicon Valley, it's almost a badge of honor. But for all the dire statistics out there, what are the real reasons some start ups don't make it? And what lessons can we learn from them? We asked 8 (now) successful founders from the Young Entrepreneur Council (YEC) to share why a prior start-up didn't make it - and what they're doing differently knowing what they know now....
For many people, especially those who often work from home (like yours truly), a trip to the local coffee shop can lead to a major productivity boost. Apparently, unbeknownst to most, there’s science to that phenomenon: the level of ambient noise common in coffee shops has been proven to increase creativity. This fact was the catalyst for Coffitivity, a charming site created by Justin Kauszler, Nicole Horton and ACe Callwood, which simply pipes ambient coffee shop noise right into your ears. Interestingly, the site’s developer, Kauszler, only started learning to code last month....
In his new book, PRESENT SHOCK: When Everything Happens Now (Current; March 15, 2013), Rushkoff introduces the phenomenon of presentism, or – since most of us are finding it hard to adapt – present shock. Alvin Toffler’s radical 1970 book, Future Shock, theorized that things were changing so fast we would soon lose the ability to cope. Rushkoff argues that the future is now and we’re contending with a fundamentally new challenge. Whereas Toffler said we were disoriented by a future that was careening toward us, Rushkoff argues that we no longer have a sense of a future, of goals, of direction at all. We have a completely new relationship to time; we live in an always-on “now,” where the priorities of this moment seem to be everything.... Rushkoff identifies the five main ways we’re struggling, as well as how the best of us are thriving in the now...
The color scheme of a site creates its atmosphere. It should be fitting, good looking, and attractive. As one of Canon’s "Project Imaginat10n" directors, the Twitter cofounder worked with Ron Howard to turn photos into a short film.
Biz Stone’s directorial debut will open with a lot of swiping, pinching, and zooming in on images. “It’s a cinematic first: Instead of the Ken Burns Effect, it’s the Biz Stone Effect,” says Stone. That may sound pompous, but a) he’s joking and b) as a cofounder of Twitter, Stone has had plenty of influence on the ways in which we view content now. “I wasn’t going to tell an old-fashioned story in which someone pulls out a photo album and starts turning pages,” he says. “That’s not how we do it now. We show each other photos on our mobile devices, pinch in on this…Isn’t she cute?” he says, as if showing off a photo.
Stone is one of the recruits for Canon U.S.A.’s ongoing "Project Imaginat10n." The latest campaign saw the brand recruit five celebrity directors (along with Stone, Eva Longoria, Jamie Foxx, James Murphy, and Georgina Chapman) who will create films based on user-submitted photos along a series of themes; the films will debut in the fall. Stone was given 91 photos--nine on each of the 10 themes and the final image chosen by director Ron Howard--and he will use each of them in crafting a short film which will star Rene Auberjonois (Deep Space Nine) and Lisa Edelstein (House)....
Social media has not only leveled the playing field for small businesses, it’s enabled professionals of all ages to compete. If you’re not learning, you’re dead. The opportunity social media presents for learning is so vast that anyone, regardless of age, who has gumption, passion, and energy can compete with youngsters in a highly successful way. More and more, avatars with gray hair are populating Twitter. I’m making an assumption they are aging gracefully and wiser as a result of social media. Someone on a Google+ Community posted a suggestion that we should petition Advertising Age for a Top 50 Over 50 instead of the customary Top 40 Under 40 feature. (I concur.)...
