For James Arruda Henry, the answer to “How old is too old?” would be: “Never.” He was 96 years old when he learned to read. Once he acquired literacy, he hand-wrote his autobiography, In a Fisherman’s Language.

Yahoo CEO rebrands layoffs as a ‘remix’

Yahoo CEO rebrands layoffs as a ‘remix’ | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

Executives have attempted to soften the blow of discussing layoffs over the years by using new terms, such as “offboarding,” “rightsizing,” “smartsizing” and “streamlining.”

Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer coined another this week on a conference call with reporters and analysts: “remix.”

According to Dice, Mayer said the 1,100 net layoffs the company had in the first quarter of 2015 were part of a “remixing and pivoting” of the company....

Jeff Domansky's insight:

Yahoo! More layoffs and not very savvy description of the layoffs as a "remix"  by CEO Marissa Mayer. This is what happens when CEOs mix strategy language into communication when plainspoken and clear communications are needed.

The Ultimate Online Editing and Proofreading Checklist

The Ultimate Online Editing and Proofreading Checklist | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

As we all know, content creation isn't as simple as just stringing together a few words and hitting "publish." At least all high-quality content creators know this.

If you really think about it, the editorial process has quite a few steps -- from ideation, to concepting, to production, to proofreading, editing and copyediting. Unfortunately, it's that last part that often gets undermined, rushed through, or altogether just swept aside as writers and content creators hurry to get content out the door. But if you really want to ship remarkable, high-quality content, you can't afford to overlook the proofreading and editing process. ...

Jeff Domansky's insight:

Before publishing, be sure to clean up your content with this thorough proofreading and editing checklist from HubSpot. Nice and practical.

One way to keep your content moving is to share relevant posts from influencers in your line of business. The cherry on the cake is when one of your own articles or Social Media posts gets shared by an influencer, as it gets in front of many more eyes immediately.

Once this happens, do you know what’s the best way to take it from there? Your response to the influencer’s attention can make it or break it....

(Great advice): There is one piece of advice that’s always worked for me both online and offline. Whenever you meet someone famous, just STAY COOL. They’re just human beings like you. If they have an ‘attitude’, then they’re not the type of influencer you’d want to connect with. Influencers worth connecting with are those who understand the power of being useful to others, no matter how ‘small’ you might be.

It's important to realize that many people reading this will be behind the trend and chasing it without seeing results. Think about previous years when you heard how important it was to build your email list. If you jumped on that trend then you realized that by the time you built a big enough list to mean anything, that has become less effective.

Next you were told how Social Media was going to make a break your business. Many people chasing that trend did not reap the rewards they anticipated. Why? Is it because social media marketing isn't effective? Is it that the gurus were wrong when they told you that without SEO nobody would find your website? No. It's about timing. Just like this article when it's focusing on everyone's excitement of content marketing. What happens when EVERYONE focuses on content marketing? Just like everything else.. it becomes clutter and noise. Does this mean not to create valuable content for readers to consume? Absolutely not. My message to you is to get ahead of the trends, not follow them.

The next trend is video. Create as many videos and as much content as you can. These assets will dominate in the next 3 years when everyone is sick of reading all this content.

A week into 2014, Mark Schaefer published a blog post that questioned whether content marketing – which he termed “the hottest marketing trend around” – was a sustainable strategy for businesses.

So, instead of focusing on the popular SEO practices of the day, I doubled down on highly valuable content. It turns out that was the correct strategy. Every single algorithmic change Google has implemented between 2008 and today has rewarded my content-centric approach and torpedoed the SEO link wrestling game.

Now, everybody is catching up to that reality. SEO is turning to content creation as a means to their end. An SEO professional recently remarked to me what a great job I was doing with SEO. I protested. “I don’t have a systematic strategy,” I said. “I’m just producing great content.”...
