Story Structure Diagrams « Ingrid's Notes

Story Structure Diagrams « Ingrid's Notes | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it
Yes, it's true, I've had story structure on the brain. I've also recently joined pinterest (of which I immediately became addicted). But there's a happy side effect of these two obsessions… this post!

Holy Cow! Here's a blog post with 10 different diagrams on story structure! I doubt you will ever need another story structure diagram after looking at these.

Some are similar. Some have their own unique twist. And then there's the 17 stages of Joseph Campbell's Monomyth to explore. Yikes -- that's a big one!

Of course, the simplest story structure is: problem -- resolution. Add to that a set-up/context in the beginning and a meaningful close at the end, and you are done.

Hah -- would that storytelling could be so simple! As every professional storyteller will tell you, a powerful story is all in the delivery. Still, if you don't follow the structures in these diagrams, you will simply end up with a plot-based description: "I went to the store. I bought some bread. I came home." No story there! I doubt you would pay money for that one.

Soooo -- check out these diagrams, use them to craft your stories, and you are half-way there. Then go work on your delivery :)

I’m a Google Glass skeptic and think it’ll be the next Apple Newton | @andrewchen

I’m a Google Glass skeptic and think it’ll be the next Apple Newton | @andrewchen | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

Recently I tweeted the following: i’m a google glass skeptic. Who’s with me?

Turns out most people think Google Glass is going to be awesome. Frankly, I was surprised- I figured it would be more balanced.

But it turns out that people are more excited about the idea of Glass than any particular use case. And I’m excited about the product category too, but think the v1 might suck.

Google Glass is the new Apple Newton.

One day wearable computing glasses may turn out awesome, but I’m convinced that the Google Glass will be like the Apple Newton- a visionary product well ahead of its time, and maybe 10 years after its release, someone will figure out how to make it mainstream using a different design....

Jeff Domansky's insight:

I hope Google Glass leads to something fabulous. Like most innovations, the door really is just opening to new possibilities despite a few speed bumps ahead.

4 new whiskey trends for 2013 | MarketWatch | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

Need a stiff drink? Certainly, Tuesday’s hard-fought election, in which President Barack Obama managed to capture a second term, has some Americans thinking about reaching for something strong — whether to celebrate or commiserate. The good news: The days when the whiskey-drinking options were largely limited to the same few brands of blended Scotches and mid-level bourbons are long gone. For that matter, even the single-malt craze is starting to seem a little less than fresh. At New York’s recent WhiskyFest, an annual event organized by Whisky Advocate magazine, the latest styles of sips were given prominent billing. So, what’s the smart whiskey drinker drinking these days? Read on….

Ford Report Finds Opportunities In Social Shifting| MediaPost

Ford Report Finds Opportunities In Social Shifting| MediaPost | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

...The report says people are getting some optimism back, although their buying habits -- particularly those of 20- to 30-year-olds -- are going to be radically different. The report lists 13 "microtrends." First on the list is trust, or "trust is the new black." Gerzema said there has been a 50% decline in trust since 2001, but a 35% rise in trust as a driver of brand equity. That suggests there's an opportunity for brands that open their arms wide and say, "Here I am with all my blemishes."

"Customers want a reason to believe and brands who give them that will be better off," said Connelly. Gerin said MasterCard is doing just fine in that category -- as she said the brand is 87% more trusted than any other brand of any kind.

McCracken said trust matters in a "black swan" world full of disruptive competitors. "The last 20 years have been a chronicle of brands behaving badly," he said. "The name of the game is absolute transparency." The good news for established brands is that assuming they have not been behaving badly, they have equity, while new competitors have nothing but VC money. To achieve trust equity functionally, the "front" of a company -- its brand, communications, what it claims to be -- must match the back, the invisible side, where it does what it actually does....

As we prepare to downshift our minds for the holidays I thought it might be fun to create a snapshot of what brands that succeed in 2013 will look like. It may help to orientate our minds as they do a lot of important unconscious work over the holiday break. Its so rare these days that we actually allow ourselves sufficient time to integrate the firehouse of information we each receive every day. Treat it as a checklist and ask yourself, on a scale of 1-10, how well your brand embodies each of these ten characteristics....

How To Spot A Trend: 7 Social Media Trends That Matter In 2013

How To Spot A Trend: 7 Social Media Trends That Matter In 2013 | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

...I look through that folder usually filled with hundreds of small ideas, and start to filter them. I group similar concepts together and think about how they will matter for the new year. My philosophy when looking at trends is pretty simple – I focus on three things:

1. Idea: What is the CORE idea behind products or campaigns that unites them and says something about our culture or business?
2. Acceleration: How quickly is the idea finding its way into multiple businesses and what are REAL examples?
3. Impact: How profoundly could this idea impact that way that business is done in the short term (next year)?

Yesterday for the first time I offered a sneak peek at the first seven of my 15 Trends for 2013 to a room filled with over 200 communicators at the Social Media Outlook 2013 event put on my Potomac Tech Wire and hosted by USA Today...

Communication plays a role in all information exchanged between living species. Technically speaking, even plants and fungi communicate with each other.

What sets us humans apart ...

is the speed at which our means of communication develops and innovates. Technology has been helping us to communicate easier, faster and more often. We’re now at a point where we’re “always on” and panic sets in when we temporarily lose the ability to communicate – for example when we lose the data connection our mobile phone....

We asked 6 experts from different fields to share their view on the future of communication....

Tracking the Harlem Shake meme | BBC

Tracking the Harlem Shake meme | BBC | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

The Harlem Shake viral video trend, which has sparked over 100,000 imitations and garnered nearly a billion views, has been going a month. It's been unique in the speed of its spread.

On 2 February, the Harlem Shake video meme was born. By 11 Feb, YouTube claimed there were 4,000 videos being uploaded a day.

Over 700 million people have viewed the videos, YouTube says. More than 100 versions have at least a million views. The most has nearly 40 million.

The format is simple. The soundtrack to every video is New York DJ Baauer's song Harlem Shake.

Each video lasts about 30 seconds. For the first 15 seconds, one person - often masked or in a helmet - dances in front of apparently oblivious or uninterested people....

The social media world is constantly evolving. It wasn’t that long ago that dial-up led to DSL which led to the iCloud.

...the velocity has greatly increased. I’m not sure what caused the “big bang” of social connectivity, but ever since that moment, the evolution has been at warp-speed.

In 2009, I wrote about a five-year plan for social media. And, reading over it now, it feels like 50 years ago.

So looking ahead, where will social media be in five years?

Some bold predictions...
