'Digital First' editorial model changes the game...

 

...The flow on effects from today’s announcement are yet to be seen and will continue to be debated over the coming days.


But for the PR industry, there are two components from today’s announcement with big implications, the editorial job cuts and the ‘Digital First’ editorial model. Combine these together and we see the reality of a trend that has already been happening for some time.


The ‘Digital First’ model means all breaking news and content must be digitally optimized with editorial staff more or less forced to file multiple times online every day. Essentially, there will be fewer journalists writing stories (and fewer journalists to pitch to) but with more pressure to write more online optimized stories, more often....

Mobile devices now account for 34 per cent of global ecommerce transactions. m-commerce accounted for 27 per cent of all ecommerce in Southeast Asia, putting the region at a similar level to Spain and Italy, and right behind the US, a report released by performance marketing technology company Criteo highlighted.


With smartphones, desktops and tablets being used in a variety of combinations to research and make purchasing decisions, globally, more than 40 per cent of ecommerce transactions now involve multiple devices.


Criteo analysed 1.4 billion individual ecommerce transactions totaling over USD 160 billion of annual sales globally.


Mobile transactions in Southeast Asia now account for 27 per cent of all ecommerce transactions, with Indonesia at 34 per cent, Taiwan at 31 per cent and Singapore at 29 per cent. Globally, mobile transactions are predicted to reach 40 per cent by the end of 2015....

Google is fun to say, but DuckDuckGo — at least for me — is a lot more fun to use. While I can’t repeat the name as a verb (I can ‘Google it’ on Google; I don’t know what I’d say for a DuckDuckGo search), the upstart search engine has quickly become my go-to on a day to day basis.


While its main draw is privacy, DuckDuckGo has another killer feature you may not have heard of. In fact, it should cause you to consider ditching your existing search engine for DuckDuckGo — yes, even Google. I’m talking about bangs.


No, not 80s hair bangs (but they would look cool on their mascot, Dax). Bangs are simply exclamation points ahead of site tags, which redirects you to that page....

While most marketers understand what a mobile app is, and also likely have heard or gone through the exercise of creating a responsive website, far fewer have sat down to map out what a mobile-first customer journey looks like.


Of course, it has become table stakes to ensure that one’s company either has a mobile application (I don’t recommend this approach for most brands) or has updated its website to be responsive. This latter technique requires elements like simple navigation, easily clickable links — by either a finger or a mouse — optimized text readability, and images that either scale or are dynamically replaced by larger or smaller images and icons.


But more important in mapping out this journey is to take a step back and think through how, where and with what one’s customers interact with their favorite brands. This journey will differ by user, but behavior will tend to cluster around factors like.....

You can bet that this tactic is probably not part of any public relations textbook.


St. Louis reporter Elliot Davis tried to score an interview with the city’s comptroller, Darlene Green. The request was denied via email, so Davis went to City Hall to speak with her about the city-owned car she drives, which costs taxpayers $26,000.


That’s when Green’s spokeswoman, Melanie Streeper steps in. Watch what happens....

Greg Daniel AM, national practice leader of KPMG SR7, discusses how social media has changed the way people respond to advertising and PR.


In 1997, direct marketing guru Lester Wunderman talked about a new definition of brand: “It represents a cluster of consumer needs. It is each customer who is becoming a brand. I am a brand – and each of you is a brand.”


At that time, he said there were 260 million individual people brands in the US alone. More than 15 years later, the rise of social media has seen Wunderman’s prediction become a reality – in ways no-one expected.


This new reality represents the biggest single opportunity the PR industry has ever had – at the expense of advertising.


According to Nielsen, only 16% of people are influenced by advertising they see on the Internet while 84% are influenced by what people tell them on social media. While the growth in online advertising is dramatic – it is still advertising!...

With over 1.4 million apps available on Google Play and over 1.2 million on the App Store, the idea that smartphone users are spoilt for choice is an understatement. And it’s not just free apps that are crowding the stores. January 2015 was the App Store’s most profitable month ever, with users spending about half a billion dollars on apps and in-app purchases in the first one week alone.


Think about that figure for a moment. Half a billion. That’s more than the entire budgets of the Titanic and Avengers: Age of Ultron combined. And that’s what people like you and I spent on our favorite yoga app or must-have game in just one week.


There’s a je ne sais quoi about apps that go viral that every app developer would like to lay their hands on. I don’t claim to be have all the answers, but an analysis of the flavors of the season – Dubsmash, Meerkat and Periscope – might help us distill the secrets behind building apps that drive fanatic downloads and sky-high engagement rates....

When I started the email list in January my main goal was to use the list to increase sales through the autoresponder sequence. I have been somewhat successful at that, but to be honest the percentage of subscribers that convert into customers could use some improvement. The good news is that traffic to the site has increased and so has the revenue of the site, so even without any improvement in the conversion rates the site is still doing pretty well considering it takes very little time to manage or promote.


Back in March when I wrote the original post I had reached 5,273 subscribers in the first 90 days with the list. I was able to do that with a simple and not-that-time-consuming approach of:

- Creating a lead magnet (which is a sample of the products for sale on the site)

- Creating a landing page to display the offer

- Creating a popup with OptinMonster to show on other pages aside from the landing page

- Publishing 4 guest posts at other blogs....

I tried to explain public relations to my grandmother once ...


This was many years ago, back when PR pros cut press coverage from publications we could actually hold in our hands, and few marketers talked about SEO in everyday conversation.


“So, it’s advertising,” she’d say, and I’d try again to explain that, no, it’s not.


“Advertising is about paying for attention; PR is about earning it.”


I don’t think she ever got it, and she’s not alone. Most people still think PR is some kind of black magic flacks work on the press -- you sprinkle a little witch’s potion, and TA-DA! You’re in The Wall Street Journal. But PR is a more strategic, sustained practice than that, and it’s a field content marketers need to understand as owned, earned and even paid media continue to intersect.

How much is your customer worth?


One approach would be to re-focus acquisition strategy based on the Customer Lifetime Value or CLV. According to the 2015 RJ Metrics Benchmark report, a new e-commerce customer is worth, on average, $154 in their first year. This number varies by type of retail. For instance, the categories of housewares, food and drugs tend to be above this average.


What is more interesting is that only 32 percent of these new customers are likely to make a second purchase in their first year. The report also reveals that the top 1 percent of customers are worth 18 times more than the average customer, which equals about $2,772.


Armed with this information, an e-tailer can easily calculate ROI on programs targeting new customers vs. programs targeting your biggest fans—the top 5 percent....

A pin loaded with hashtags, a really odd-sized image, an image with a one-word description, a Pin with no description at all.I’ve made a lot of mistakes with Pinterest, both in the Pins I’ve created and in the strategies and plans I’ve set forth. And I’ve come to discover that Pinterest is wholly unique from Twitter and Facebook, and that I’ve had things quite wrong from the start.
