Automattic Buys Scroll Kit, A Code-Free Website Builder That Once Got Legal Heat From The NYT | TechCrunch

Automattic Buys Scroll Kit, A Code-Free Website Builder That Once Got Legal Heat From The NYT | TechCrunch | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

WordPress maker Automattic’s acquisition spree to build out its platform continues apace. Today comes news that it has acquired Scroll Kit, a New York-based startup that had developed a platform for people to build websites without needing to know any code, or, in the words of co-founders Cody Brown and Kate Ray announcing the news, “a process for making the web that was more like drawing on a piece of paper.”

...For Automattic, Scroll Kit will give it some technology that can be used to enhance ways that people can use WordPress to create websites. While today there are thousands of ready-made themes that you can use for a WordPress-powered site, what Scroll Kit will do is give users the ability to add even more creativity to the process, if they so choose.

Jeff Domansky's insight:

Automattic, the owner of WordPress com is making several interesting acquisitions that indicate its future directions. Stay tuned.

Aesop Story Engine: An Open Source WordPress Plugin For Storytelling

Aesop Story Engine: An Open Source WordPress Plugin For Storytelling | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

The Aesop Story Engine is one of the most beautiful tools for WordPress that I’ve seen in a long time. Named for Aesop, the master story teller whose fables are woven into our cultural consciousness, this engine provides a powerful suite of multimedia storytelling tools. The Aesop Story Engine plugin was created to be a foundation for building feature-rich, interactive, long-form storytelling themes for WordPress.

The engine powers the Aesop Hosted Storytelling site where users can create stories for free. The Aesop development team has released it as an open source WordPress plugin, making it possible for you to add the same storytelling capabilities to your own website....

Jeff Domansky's insight:

Sarah Googing looks at a very interesting storytelling tool and WordPress plugin. Though it will need further technical refining, it's beautifully designed, feature rich and definitely a tool to watch and try out.

How To Use Tumblr To Complement Your WordPress Blog

How To Use Tumblr To Complement Your WordPress Blog | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

Tumblr or WordPress is one of the most frequently asked questions for people that are starting to get into blogging. Recently my opinion on this choice has changed to not being a choice at all. Instead of choosing one over the other, I now prefer to use both in a way that they compliment each other.

So how and why can we use both of them at the same time you may be asking. Use wordpress.org as your main blog that you completely control with your own domain name, nice design and all the other things that WordPress does very well. Many consider Tumblr not a blogging platform at all but more of a social network so in this case I aim to get the most out of Tumblr’s social properties. If you currently blog on Tumblr and are looking to switch to WordPress this is the guide that you need.

How to use TumblrInstead of using Tumblr as my main platform for a blog I only post excerpts, pics and links back to the main blog there. This is a nice way of keeping the benefits of Tumblr social network features to drive attention and traffic to your blog while getting all the good stuff from WordPress like complete ownership and control over the look and feel of your site....

Jeff Domansky's insight:

Here's a smart blogging strategy... Combine WordPress with Tumblr.

WordPress 3.9 Has Built-in Support for Pasting from Microsoft Word

WordPress 3.9 Has Built-in Support for Pasting from Microsoft Word | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

A common support question that’s been popping up on the web after WordPress users update to 3.9: What happened to the “Paste from Word” button in the visual editor? If you find that the button is missing, don’t worry – it’s not a bug. Prior to this update, the button was located in the kitchen sink of the visual editor:

WordPress 3.9, however, removes the “paste from word” button entirely. It includes TinyMCE 4.0 and has better built-in support for pasting in blocks of text for Microsoft Word. The better your software gets, the more the magic happens behind the scenes. WordPress now detects if the pasted text is coming from MS Word and makes the appropriate changes.

Until I saw the question on Reddit, indicating that the button had gone missing, I had no idea that anyone still used this feature. The missing button is actually an enhancement, not a bug. Hopefully this information has reached you before you started deactivating all your plugins.
