The Secret Weapon of Content Marketing is Public Relations

The Secret Weapon of Content Marketing is Public Relations | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

A piece of great content is an asset that has value; the sharing of it should be given appropriate attention and care.

Strong content deserves a strong PR plan.

Never thought about it that way? Not convinced your content is worthy of a PR campaign? Ask yourself the following question: Is your content marketing as worthy as your last strategic partnership or personnel announcement?

Don’t make the mistake of under-estimating your content. Content connects and content converts....

Jeff Domansky's insight:

If a brilliant infographic is created and never shared, does it really exist? PR works with content.

Why Marketing & Advertising Is Storytelling

Why Marketing & Advertising Is Storytelling | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

You can primp and polish almost anything to make it gleam and glimmer, but making something beautiful doesn’t make it unique and doesn’t make it effective.

The same can be said with advertising and PR. You can devise the most astounding campaign that implements every creative tool in the book and then some, but if your message doesn’t resonate with people, you have lost.

This summer I had the privilege of attending the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity, where I absorbed the knowledge and advice advertising and PR professionals had to give about the ever-changing field in which they work. In the seminar “Nailing Jelly to a Tree & Other Wild Goose Chases” Dr. Itiel Dror joined Nir Wegrzyn to discuss how to make your advertising messages stick with your audience and have the effect that you desire.

Dr. Dror, a cognitive neuroscientist, stressed three points: making your messages into memories, encode those messages in the appropriate parts of the brain, tell a relevant story and tell it well. All of these components combined make it possible for us as advertisers (or aspiring advertisers) to divulge into human insight and to connect with our audience in a transparent and effective way....

How Google’s Panda Algorithm Affected the PR Industry - SEMrush

How Google’s Panda Algorithm Affected the PR Industry - SEMrush | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

Google is constantly changing its algorithms. We all know about Panda, Penguin, and Hummingbird, but what people often forget is that each one is periodically updated, often without any confirmation or announcement by Google.

The latest known Panda update is Google Panda 4.1, according to the Moz Google algorithm change history log, which has had a profound effect on PR agencies.

The Panda algorithm, in particular, has made huge waves across the PR industry. According to the article ‘Did Google Panda 4.0 Go after Press Release Sites?,’ industry expert Barry Schwartz launched a study which revealed prominent PR agencies like PR Newswire, BusinessWire, and PRWeb lost up to 85% of their visibility within a matter of days.

Studies like this demonstrate that PR agencies are intertwined with the SEO industry, and must adapt or perish in a changing environment....

4 Google Tools That Will Boost Your #PR - SEMrush

4 Google Tools That Will Boost Your #PR - SEMrush | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

There’s been a lot of talk about how traditional public relations can help boost your SEO.SEO and PR go hand in hand. I’m really lucky to work with several PR professionals in my current position, and they all agree that SEO best practice is essential if your story is going to connect with its audience.

While still distinct disciplines, SEO and PR are now joined at the hip, and professionals on both sides can no longer remain ignorant of each other’s worlds. An SEO who is armed with top tier PR training can have intelligent conversations with clients in regards to branding and PR goals, and an expert public relations professional can optimize press releases, understand on-page elements and use tools beyond social media to make sure that their client’s needs are best served.

So, here are some tools that I use in my own efforts as in performing my outreach role:...

Why PR is up and advertising down - Marketing Magazine

Why PR is up and advertising down - Marketing Magazine | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

Greg Daniel AM, national practice leader of KPMG SR7, discusses how social media has changed the way people respond to advertising and PR.

In 1997, direct marketing guru Lester Wunderman talked about a new definition of brand: “It represents a cluster of consumer needs. It is each customer who is becoming a brand. I am a brand – and each of you is a brand.”

At that time, he said there were 260 million individual people brands in the US alone. More than 15 years later, the rise of social media has seen Wunderman’s prediction become a reality – in ways no-one expected.

This new reality represents the biggest single opportunity the PR industry has ever had – at the expense of advertising.

According to Nielsen, only 16% of people are influenced by advertising they see on the Internet while 84% are influenced by what people tell them on social media. While the growth in online advertising is dramatic – it is still advertising!...

...On the other hand, this seems like a strange time to be accepting a supporting role for PR. The things that PR has always been about—transparency, authenticity, credibility, engagement, conversation—are at the heart of successful marketing today, and that ought to create an opportunity for campaigns that are driven by a PR idea to win big at Cannes.

We certainly should not be looking at narrowing the definition of public relations to ensure that the winners all feel like “real” PR campaigns....

Paul Holmes suggests we shouldn't be so hung up on the definition of PR much as the principles behind doing it right.

Trust Hacking

Trust Hacking | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

We can shortcut the path to trust and sell more products by leveraging certain behavioral psychology principles called cognitive biases and heuristics. Cognitive biases and heuristics are mental models (sometimes irrational or flawed) used to reduce the time or energy for a task when making judgments.

While there are over 100 cognitive biases and heuristics, I want to focus specifically on ones that give your product instant trust in the eyes of the consumer.

Hence trust hacking.

But first, a warning: I am in no way promoting black hat persuasion tactics for the sole purpose of getting money from people. You must first have a good product that will genuinely help consumers. 20 Weirdest Words Added to the Dictionary Because of Technology

20 Weirdest Words Added to the Dictionary Because of Technology | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

Although the Oxford English Dictionary editors get the final say, they actually look to us to dictate whether a word should be added. In other words, we have no one but ourselves to blame for all the weird words that make the cut every year.

But we can at least share the blame with technology. None of us would be saying "srsly" if we hadn't felt the urge to shorten words for text messages and emails. We wouldn't be voting anyone off the island if not for the television series Survivor. And, perhaps most importantly, there would be no need for the word "meatspace" without the existence of the virtual world. (One could argue there is still no need.)

3 PR Tips from a Burned-Out Blogger

3 PR Tips from a Burned-Out Blogger | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

When my boss sent an email saying we should buy former TechCrunch reporter Jason Kincaid’s book, The Burned-Out Blogger’s Guide to PR, she included a link to a review of the book and noted that it explained a lot of our challenges. I admit I was hooked by the first paragraph of the article:“Then-TechCrunch writer Jason Kincaid was attending a press event in San Francisco, frantically trying to finish his story before the embargo lifted. When someone from the company came over to ask how things were going, he blurted out: ‘I hate you.’

”As a former reporter myself (though more on the lighthearted side), I knew I would likely relate to some of his peeves. However, spending some time on the “dark side” has been a bit of a humbling experience. Kincaid reminds us a few times that reporters are people, but I’d like to remind everyone that PR reps are people, too.

Regardless, in between the slightly bitter generalizations and laugh-out-loud moments in this book, there’s a lot of great information and important reminders for startups as well as every PR professional. Here are a few of my favorites:...

7 Important PR Lessons Every Content Marketer Needs to Learn

7 Important PR Lessons Every Content Marketer Needs to Learn | Public Relations & Social Media Insight | Scoop.it

I tried to explain public relations to my grandmother once ...

This was many years ago, back when PR pros cut press coverage from publications we could actually hold in our hands, and few marketers talked about SEO in everyday conversation.

“So, it’s advertising,” she’d say, and I’d try again to explain that, no, it’s not.

“Advertising is about paying for attention; PR is about earning it.”

I don’t think she ever got it, and she’s not alone. Most people still think PR is some kind of black magic flacks work on the press -- you sprinkle a little witch’s potion, and TA-DA! You’re in The Wall Street Journal. But PR is a more strategic, sustained practice than that, and it’s a field content marketers need to understand as owned, earned and even paid media continue to intersect.

Below are seven PR lessons for content marketers (and for my relatives who still don’t understand what I do).....
