Last week Princeton researchers released a widely covered  study saying Facebook would lose 80% of its users by 2015-2017. But nowFacebook’s data scientists have turned the study’s silly “correlation equals causation” methodology of tracking Google search volume against it to show Princeton would lose all of its students by 2021.

A Facebook spokesperson says “the report that Princeton put out is utter nonsense.” Indeed, it’s flawed throughout....

After years of experimentation, cancellations and redesigns, Facebook looks like it is finally going to launch in the coming weeks a news reading service built for mobile devices.


The product is known as “Paper,” according to a source familiar with the matter, and it is similar to Flipboard, a buzzy mobile-focused news reading app. Paper looks to be either a standalone mobile application or a Web experience suited to mobile devices, according to this person. Facebook could launch the app before the end of January, this person said, though the timetable could change.


Paper and Flipboard share a number of similarities, according to this person. Both essentially act as aggregators of rich media content, displaying a mix of news stories from publications like the New York Times or the Washington Post, along with status updates from Facebook users — all in a visually stunning “paper-like” format hearkening back to a time before digital devices....

Chip Zdarsky is a comic book artist and journalist. He is also a devoted pen pal ... of an Applebee's. For the past several months, Zdarsky has taken to Facebook to befriend one of the fast-casual chain's Canadian franchises. And the franchise has, fortunately, returned his overtures. The results of the unlikely duo's interaction — you can read the whole thing at Buzzfeed — are hilarious and delightful and wonderfully weird. And maybe, in their way, literary. The Chip/Applebee's exchanges, played out on Applebee's Facebook page, are like Waiting for Godot ... if God were an Applebee's. They're like Her ... if ScarJo were a riblet....

This is either useful or terrifying, depending on how the data affect you: Researchers at Facebook and Cornell University have figured out a formula that predicts whether a couple is likely to break up within the next 60 days.


Jon Kleinberg, a computer scientist at Cornell, and Lars Backstrom, a senior engineer at Facebook, took a dataset of 1.3 million Facebook users who listed that they were in a relationship. They were actually looking for a formula that could predict which users were in relationships with each other.


They found that the shape, or “dispersion”, of your friends network is the key. You might expect that a cluster of mutual friends indicates two people are in a relationship but the opposite is the case: You’re more likely to have cluster of mutual coworkers listing each other as friends than a couple...

Facebook advertising chief Carolyn Everson says more Americans log in to Facebook during primetime every night than tune in to the major television networks.


As we've told you in the past, both Twitter and Facebook are competing strenuously for the advertising dollars marketing clients have traditionally spent on television.


Twitter's argument lies in the fact that an increasingly distracted TV audience uses its service to discuss what they're watching in real-time.Facebook's argument is even stronger, according to vp/global marketing solutions Carolyn Everson.


Whereas Twitter hopes to win advertising dollars by making itself an integral part of the television-watching experience, Facebook believes the sheer size of its user base makes it a TV-sized mass medium all by itself....

According to John McDermott at Digiday, Instagram is conducting a test (yes, for now it’s just a test) with Mercedes-Benz that allows them to target Facebook users who previously saw one of its Instagram ads. While this development is eye-opening in and of itself, as it gives hints into Facebook plans on returning their $1B investment, it also shows Facebook’s commitment to transforming how advertising not only can coexist with social media, but thrive and break into new levels of adoption.


What stands out the most to me is how inherent behavioral characteristics seen on both Facebook and Instagram are being aligned with their natural fit in the conversion funnel. As noted by McDermott, Instagram’s product naturally promotes behavior more conducive to the top of the funnel, where brand awareness comes into play. If Instagram is committed to preserving the user experience that allowed them to break 200 million users, it behooves them to preserve this characteristic of their product and not to “forcefully” incorporate more direct-response elements like call-to-action buttons, etc....

Facebook has just finished a deal to acquire mobile photo sharing app Instagram for approximately $1 billion in cash and stock. Instagram will remain an independently branded standalone app that’s separate from Facebook, but the services will increase their ties to each other. The transaction should go through this quarter pending some standard closing procedures.

 

Last year, documents for a standalone Facebook mobile photo sharing app were attained by TechCrunch. Now it seems Facebook would rather buy Instagram which comes with a built-in community of photographers and photo lovers, while simultaneously squashing a threat to its dominance in photo sharing.

 

At 27 million registered users on iOS alone, Instagram was increasingly positioning itself as a social network in its own right — not just a photo-sharing app. And it was clear that some users were doing more of the daily sharing actvities on Instagram rather than Facebook’s all-in-one mobile apps, which had to be cluttered with nearly every feature of the desktop site.

Facebook pulled the best practical joke of the internet age: the company convinced countless celebrities, bands, and "brands" that its service was the best way to reach people with eyeballs and money. Maybe it is! But now that companies have taken the bait, Facebook is holding the whole operation hostage.


Update: To be perfectly clear, none of this will affect the average Facebook user's ability to freely use Facebook—only entities that use Facebook as a promotional tool.


A source professionally familiar with Facebook's marketing strategy, who requested to remain anonymous, tells Valleywag that the social network is "in the process of" slashing "organic page reach" down to 1 or 2 percent. This would affect "all brands"—meaning an advertising giant like Nike, which has spent a great deal of internet effort collecting over 16 million Facebook likes, would only be able to affect of around a 160,000 of them when it pushes out a post. Companies like Gawker, too, rely on gratis Facebook propagation for a huge amount of their audience. Companies on Facebook will have to pay or be pointless....

Farcebook marketing follies continue as it alienates business and marketing further and further. In my view, it's an outcome of becoming a public company. It starts with the inevitable cultural and organizational changes, an evolution away from product innovation and its most important audience - consumers. Living and dying by quarterly financials eventually wrings the entrepreneurial spirit from even the best companies.

Is Facebook Paper short for Facebook NewsPaper?


Thursday’s unveiling of a new standalone content curation app, Facebook Paper, comes after weeks of speculation and rumors about Facebook hiring editors (the humans in the mix) to help curate content for the hyper-visual mobile app. Now it’s real, though not here yet. Facebook Paper arrives in the AppStore on Feb. 3. That leaves us a few days to speculate on what Facebook is really up to and if, in fact, this is the social media giant ever-so-gingerly dipping its toe into the contentcreation / media company waters.


First, though, a little primer on the app. Think of it as Facebook Magazine, a standalone app that starts with your News Feed, but looks nothing like the familiar blue Facebook mobile app or web page. It’s full-frame images that seem to extend beyond the borders of your phone, videos that are ready to play with a tap, overlaid captions, posts from not only friends, but curated posts from Facebook editors who are experts in their fields and Facebook’s new topic areas....

The change is subtle but its message is clear: Facebook has entered the news business.


It’s no secret that Facebook is changing what appears in your feed dramatically. Whereas memes used to rule supreme--making basically anything shared by George Takei go viral--Facebook has reweighted its algorithms to recognize higher quality stories and showcase more news to its users. And publishers, Fast Company included, have seen meaningful gains in Facebook referrals because of it.


Now, Co.Design has learned that Facebook is actually taking its dedication to news a step further by building the traditional feel of newspapers into the design itself. Facebook appears to be experimenting* with a serif font for news headlines--a long-time favorite of the newspaper industry for body copy. Now that might not look like a huge shift to the average person, but it’s a jarring change to any typography nerd, given that web companies have traditionally preferred the smoother lines of sans-serif fonts (think Helvetica) to the ornamental edges found in serif fonts (think Times New Roman)....

Facebook has been very kind to me over the years and I've written so many good articles about it that now it is time to add a little balance.


Nobody has written more positive stuff about Facebook over the last 4-5 years. I was so overwhelmingly positive about the company that plenty of people suggested on a regular basis that I was a fan boy or that I owned stock in the company. Since 2006 I thought that Facebook was the best run company and most interesting change in technology we have seen in generations. It inspired revolutions across the Middle East, attracted well over a billion users and provided some of the most targeted marketing solutions in the history of the world. Over the last 2-3 months my mind has been changing though and today I’ve decided to de-activate my account on Facebook. Here is why….
