What's New With the New Rules of Marketing and PR?

What's New With the New Rules of Marketing and PR? | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

If there's a bible for this new media world in which we do business, it's David Meerman Scott's The New Rules of Marketing and PR. Originally published in 2007, New Rules has since sold more than 300,000 copies in more than 25 languages, from Bulgarian to Vietnamese. What's more, it ignited a movement that embraced social media and content as a cornerstone of business communication.

For me, personally, this is the book (along with the Cluetrain Manifesto) that changed the way I approach marketing—from mostly outbound to mostly inbound—and shifted my thinking about the nature of the buyer-seller relationship....A revised and updated edition (its fourth!) of the classic is out this month. David and I had a chance to sit down and talk about what's new in new marketing, and whether the new rules are still... well, new....

Jeff Domansky's insight:

Looking forward to reading the new, updated edition and "rules" of marketing and PR.

Solaborate launches new social platform exclusively for tech professionals | ZDNet

Solaborate launches new social platform exclusively for tech professionals | ZDNet | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

LinkedIn might start to lose its dominance as a social networking platform in the technology sector after today's beta launch of Solaborate...

Its not often that I see a tech demo that makes me go "wow". But I am really impressed with what I have seen so far with new social networking platform Solaborate. Solaborate is the first social networking platform dedicated to technology professionals. And it pushes all the right buttons for techies too. Launching in beta today, Solaborate enables tech professionals and companies to connect, collaborate, and create an ecosystem around products and services. It provides technology professionals a central place with the right tools and services to collaborate in real time — both internally and externally — and solve business problems....

Jeff Domansky's insight:

Early reviews are positive on this new social channel for tech pros.

Revealed: Why Techmeme links to them instead of you! - Techmeme News

Revealed: Why Techmeme links to them instead of you! - Techmeme News | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

[Some of the best media relations advice I've seen in this article. Read on....

JD]

Over time, nearly every major tech news publisher has asked us a variant of "Why do you always post them and not us?" or "Why did you pick them over us for that story when we posted first?" So it's probably time to address this issue in a general way. If you don't write tech news for a living, be thankful that you can skip the following post. For the rest of you, my apologies, now please get comfortable and read on.

Understanding why Techmeme does what it does starts with understanding our mission. Which is: to highlight the essential tech news and commentary of the moment on a single page. The must-reads for anyone who needs to know where the industry is heading, whether they're an investor, engineer, entrepreneur, executive, or enthusiast. We aim broader than most tech news sites, covering both hardware and software, both people and products, and beyond: events, trends, ideas, companies, policy, and culture. But not too broad: "tech" for us doesn't include biotech or cleantech, and we usually steer clear of content only developers would understand or hardcore gamers would appreciate. We also avoid evergreen how-tos or advice pieces, instead focusing on what's changed, or shifting, or different, i.e. "news". We try to be comprehensive: it irks us when we miss a major story. We also aim to be fast: the big stories need to appear in minutes, not hours. We also try to be highly scannable, which requires lucid, detail-rich headlines. Finally, we want the stories we link to be satisfying for our busy readers, and therefore clear, well-written, correct in any factual claims, succinct where possible, and supported by links where appropriate....

Cultures are all different on social media too | LEWIS PR

Cultures are all different on social media too | LEWIS PR | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it
Using the four cultural dimensions that academic Geert Hofstede created to explain how cultures differ, we look at whether the same aspects are also present in the way cultures approach social media too.

...our cultural differences are still alive and kicking – and they have a profound impact on the way we deal with social media. Some of our findings even confirm what we know about culture from well-established academic literature. In other words: people from different nationalities react to social media in a way that could have been predicted by social science.

In this post, I’d like to take you through the four cultural dimensions that academic Geert Hofstede created to explain how cultures differ back in the Eighties, and if they can be seen reflected in today’s social media channels....

Kaley Hannon's curator insight, October 10, 2013 1:18 AM

This article is interesting because it explores how Hofstede defined culture and how it relates to society even now. It seems that in this time of social media that the culture divide would be thinning but this article argues that social media makes in even more evident that Hofstede's ideas on culture apply just as much now as they ever have.

Hooked! PR’s gone mainstream in the age of social media | memeburn

Hooked! PR’s gone mainstream in the age of social media | memeburn | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

...Fortunately despite this game-change, some fundamentals remain. Such as the ever-increasing need and value in having a strong ‘hook’. The centre piece of any PR story worth its salt, the hook is designed to appeal to consumers’ interests and identity, and encourage them to spread the video/article/photo/tweet/post to their networks, and their networks and their networks. Otherwise, just like offering a journalist a story without an angle, it will see as much airtime as a has-been pop star. And it’s because of this ‘hook’ that I think it’s an interesting time to be in public relations.

What has been a PR staple ever since it made its debut in the early 1900s, appears to have gone marketing mainstream. In fact, it was Jim Paul, EVP of Weber Shandwick who said at a recent Holmes Report round-table event among ex-marketers and advertisers, “Whatever we used to do was to get attention; we didn’t think about who was going to cover it! Who cares about who covers it, it’s a great idea! Well, that’s not the world we live in: It’s now come up with a great idea that also has a hook that people will carry and get out there and get impressions. So that battle between “great idea” and “we have a job to do” is something I definitely need to get up to speed with.”

Touché! This is both thrilling and terrifying for PR. Thrilling because its appears as if its bread and butter has reached a tipping point; terrifying because creating relevant, engaging and compelling content is no longer just its domain; it’s everyone’s within the marketing mix. The opportunity this creates, or challenge depending on how one views it, is for PR to integrate its best practice, through-the-line, so that a sharable story which strongly resonates with its audience is at the heart of the next ‘The Big Idea’....
