Albemarle removes Sherlock Holmes book from reading list

Albemarle removes Sherlock Holmes book from reading list | Public Library Circulation | Scoop.it

As we all know, Sherlock Holmes stories are going to corrupt our kids. Those riots in England? Yeah, I'm sure Sherlock Holmes had something to do with them. #facepalm

"More than 20 former Henley students turned out to oppose the book’s removal from the lists."

Apple, publishers conspired against $9.99 Amazon e-books, says lawsuit | Public Library Circulation | Scoop.it
According to a new lawsuit, the Kindle combined with discounted $9.99 e-books so terrified the publishing industry that it joined forces with Apple in a scheme to force Amazon to raise its prices.

What will the library of the future look like?

What will the library of the future look like? | Public Library Circulation | Scoop.it

So, while people debate about how the future of libraries is going to play out, I have a different take on it. Being the son of a man who maintained and cleaned libraries for over 25 years, I have to wonder... What will they LOOK like?

"Rita Meade, a New York librarian also known as Screwy Decimal, has been finding out what American children think about the library of the future. She was interested and surprised to hear many digitally minded suggestions such as: ..."

I have always been happy in libraries, though without ever being entirely at ease there. A scene that seems to crop up regularly in plays that I have written has a character, often a young man, standing in front of a bookcase feeling baffled.

Google Plus Tells Pseudonym Lovers to Shove It

Google Plus Tells Pseudonym Lovers to Shove It | Public Library Circulation | Scoop.it

While I can understand the whole policy of using your real name, I've always thought that one of the distinct advantages the Internet has over real life is that you can change your name at any time without filling out any paperwork or paying any fees.

I think this maneuver is very short sighted and that Google, of all places, should know better. Oh well...

Find PDF Manuals for Electronics Using Google and Amazon

Find PDF Manuals for Electronics Using Google and Amazon | Public Library Circulation | Scoop.it

I get a fair number of requests for things like this here at the library. Heck, I recently bought a video camera and it didn't even come with a manual. Instead it came with a slip of paper telling you how to download the manual from the net or, and this was kind of novel, get it off the camera itself. Turns out, they simply stored the manual in the camera's memory.

Hey, no trees died in the making of that manual.

Amazon has finally released a Web app for reading, downloading, and buying Kindle books.

I know I've already posted something on this, but this is a pretty big development and, since this article comes from Ars Technica and features hands on use of the new Kindle Cloud Reader, I figure it's worth a read too.
