While I can understand the whole policy of using your real name, I've always thought that one of the distinct advantages the Internet has over real life is that you can change your name at any time without filling out any paperwork or paying any fees.

 

I think this maneuver is very short sighted and that Google, of all places, should know better. Oh well...
