Future of Work: What Skills Will Help Us Keep Pace? empathy, innovation, new teamwork and new leadership. | Public Diplomacy in Education | Scoop.it

These are the changemaking skills of empathy, innovation, new teamwork and new leadership. As STEM skills help us learn the latest technologies—changemaking skills can help us flourish in a society transitioning from hierarchical to flat, fast moving networks.

Each of the changemaking skills is key, but I’ll focus on the most important one—empathy.

In our increasingly interconnected world, one’s actions have a bigger impact on others and can create tremendous positive or negative outcomes in record time. From the Arab Spring, Occupy Wall Street, ISIS, the Ice Bucket Challenge, and the increasing rate at which new companies and industries are forming and collapsing—change that traditionally took decades is now happening in months.

Hierarchical systems of authority are increasingly struggling to keep up. The systemic solution is to help everyone develop the new skills needed to get along with others in a flat, fast-moving world.

We have already seen the power of empathetic and decisive people successfully leading and navigating in this new world.

Public diplomacy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In international relations, public diplomacy or people's diplomacy, broadly speaking, is the communication with foreign publics to establish a dialogue designed to inform and influence. There is no one definition of Public Diplomacy, and may be easier described than easily defined as definitions have changed and continue to change over time. It is practiced through a variety of instruments and methods ranging from personal contact and media interviews to the Internet and educational exchanges.

Nicholas J. Cull of the USC Center on Public Diplomacy, wrote in his essay "'Public Diplomacy' Before Gullion: The Evolution of a Phrase:

"The earliest use of the phrase "public diplomacy" to surface is actually not American at all but in a leader piece from The Times in January 1856. It is used merely as a synonym for civility in a piece criticizing the posturing of President Franklin Pierce. The modern meaning of the term "public diplomacy" was coined in 1965 by Edmund Gullion, dean of the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University and a distinguished retired foreign service officer, when he established an Edward R. Murrow Center of Public Diplomacy[1]

This is the second perspective on Maslow's hierarchy I have seen in the past few weeks.  As we try to make learning more rigorous and more inclusive for all students the importance of meeting student needs in a variety of ways is very important.  This must include Social/emotional as well as technological.

I like this story but it is a little bit on the not really side because it says that step aim for the best in the world but sometimes the best in the world is not also the case best for the world I don't know that is just my thought so what do you think and please do tell me if you know. There is also that it says that you must make money a vital part of leadership yes most of the time that is the case but I don't know.(great story)

Leadership skills worth a read? #litabixtips

Ella Barresi's curator insight, May 15, 8:49 PM

This is a great article that represents the leadership skills that can be developed in students that obtain an education in the arts. These leadership skills closely align with the general capabilities section of most of the Australian Curriculum. Reading this article provide insight that with an education in the arts, we could be creating well rounded adults to are able to actively contribute to community.

Alana Ford's comment, June 2, 8:53 AM
I really enjoyed reading this article. With my field is not based in the arts, I have never really thought about the qualities one develops from being exposed and learning in that environment. What important and great quality skills to have and ones we want all our students to have. Just as I am passionate about health being in the curriculum, room for the arts is just as important. Thanks for giving me insight Ella
