Introducing Twitter #Data Grants | Twitter for Researchers | #datascience | Public Datasets - Open Data - | Scoop.it
Today we’re introducing a pilot project we’re calling Twitter Data Grants, through which we’ll give a handful of research institutions access to our public and historical data. Wi......
luiy's insight:

With more than 500 million Tweets a day, Twitter has an expansive set of data from which we can glean insights and learn about a variety of topics, from health-related information such as when and where the flu may hit to global events like ringing in the new year. To date, it has been challenging for researchers outside the company who are tackling big questions to collaborate with us to access our public, historical data. Our Data Grants program aims to change that by connecting research institutions and academics with the data they need.

If you’d like to participate, submit a proposal here no later than March 15th. For this initial pilot, we’ll select a small number of proposals to receive free datasets. We can do this thanks to Gnip, one of our certified data reseller partners. They are working with us to give selected institutions free and easy access to Twitter datasets. In addition to the data, we will also be offering opportunities for the selected institutions to collaborate with Twitter engineers and researchers.

Top 15 Twitter #Acronyms I #DataAnalysis | Public Datasets - Open Data - | Scoop.it
luiy's insight:

Twitter, like each online platforms before it, quickly evolved its own lingo. The 140 character limit necessarily forces concision. Unfortunately, that shortening can also hide meaning, especially if you’re at all new to Twitter. Below are the acronyms that I’ve encountered most frequently on Twitter over the years, along with appropriately short explanations.

CNN And Twitter Partner With Dataminr To Create News #Tool For Journalists | #datajournalism #opendata | Public Datasets - Open Data - | Scoop.it
CNN is hosting a press event today to announce a partnership with Twitter and social analytics company Dataminr, resulting in a new tool called Dataminr For..

luiy's insight:

Dataminr CEO Ted Bailey said the goal is to “alert journalists to information that’s emerging on Twitter in real time.” Basically, the technology looks at tweets and finds patterns that can reveal breaking news when it’s still in its “infancy.” Those alerts can be delivered in a variety of ways, including via desktop applications, email, mobile alerts, and pop-up alerts.

The program, which was piloted with CNN, isn’t just for alerts, Bailey added. He said it also offers analytics data around who broke the news and how it spread. He also said that it doesn’t just have to be for breaking news, but for finding interesting features, as well.

140dev Twitter API Framework – Free Source Code Library I #opendata #twitter

140dev Twitter API Framework – Free Source Code Library I #opendata #twitter | Public Datasets - Open Data - | Scoop.it
140dev Twitter Framework: Free source code library for developing custom Twitter applications in PHP and Javascript. Aggregation, display, datamining.
luiy's insight:

All of the interaction between the modules in this framework are through the database, which means that additional modules can be written in any language that has a MySQL interface. The flexibility and potential for expansion is the reason for calling it a framework. Other programmers can freely add modules in any language, all of which can cooperate and coexist in a single installation.

Please contact Adam (140dev@gmail.com) if you want to become a contributor to this open source project. You can discuss any problems you have with this code in its Google Group.

Twitter Database Server (download)

This is the core module of the 140dev streaming API framework. It uses the Twitter API to gather tweets for selected keywords and stores them in a MySQL database. The rest of the libraries are built as plugins that share information with this database server.

Twitter Display Plugin (download)

This 140dev plugin displays a formatted list of tweets on any Web page with a single line of PHP code. The plugin calls your copy of the Twitter database server, retrieves the most recent tweets, and returns them as formatted HTML. All tweet entities are rendered as links.
