Social Sharing Stimulates Brain Like Sex, Food - 05/09/2012...

"That judgment is based on new research conducted by psychologists at Harvard, which suggests that disclosing information about oneself activates the same neural rewards center associated with other basic desires like food and sex.

The study, titled “Disclosing information about the self is intrinsically rewarding,” used an MRI to observe the brain activity of subjects who were asked questions about themselves and others -- including, for example, personal food preferences, enjoyment of leisure activities, and so on..." Occupy Oakland is Dead. Long Live the Oakland Commune. : BayofRage

"The Oakland Commune; that dense network of new found affinity and rebelliousness that sliced through seemingly impenetrable social barriers like never before. Our “war machine and our care machine” as one comrade put it. No cops, no politicians, plenty of “autonomous actions”; the Commune materialized for one month in liberated Oscar Grant Plaza at the corner of 14th & Broadway....

For a whole generation of young people in this country, these past six months have been the first taste of what it means to struggle as part of a multiplying and complex social movement that continually expands the realm of possibilities and pushes participants through radicalization processes that normally take years"

by Cyrus Farivar - May 18 2012, 3:52pm

SceneTap uses facial detection technology to output stats on bar attendance.

"Essentially the goal is to try to create a network that is able to tell you in real-time what a scene is like at a given bar," said Andrew Nieman, the company’s director of business development,"

Shareable: Repair Cafes Counter Consumerism with Fixer Movement

"In The Netherlands, mom and former journalist Martine Postma stumbled onto an idea that tacks the word "repair" onto the familiar green mantra, "reduce, re-use, recycle". The result is community-based Repair Cafes where folks come together to fix their broken items. What started as a few neighbors in Amsterdam helping each other out has, two years later, become a much bigger deal with 30 groups springing up around the country...William McDonoughsays, " What happened with planned obsolescence is that it became mindless — just throw it away and don’t think about it. The value of the Repair Cafe is that people are going back into a relationship with the material things around them.”" by Kelly McCartney

Facebook, General Motors and the caveats of online advertising

The big story going around the news in the past 24 hours is that of American car maker General Motors pulling its advertising from Facebook, citing "little impact".

Essentially it is a method of advertising which understands that a consumer needs to see a brand (on average) between 5 and 7 times before choosing to make a purchase..."
