Cut down on the stress in business meetings by being prepared so as not to overtalk, while reaching for the right words. I can be guilty of that. This more succinct conversation is referred to as "mench."

“ Parents, like teachers, know first-hand how kids can flare up. How a simple, no, can lead to an I hate you. Or how a perceived slight can lead to a physical altercation on the playground. Teaching children mindfulness -- like teaching them math -- provides them a valuable skill and one that that will have practical applications every day of their lives, present and future.”

Nudge economics: has push come to shove for a fashionable theory?

Nudge economics: has push come to shove for a fashionable theory? | Psychology in Business & Organisations | Scoop.it
“A rival psychologist has debunked the behavioural economics of Daniel Kahneman and the men behind Nudge – once David Cameron's pet thinkers. Tim Adams reports (Nudge economics: has push come to shove for a fashionable theory?”
Barbara Lond's insight:
Psychology is a huge area, but is backed up by science. The public wouldn't know the difference between a real psychologist and someone who calls themselves a psychologist. There are a few journalists who write about psychological topics. The profession does not really promote the benefits to society, and a professional body (nit in the US) does not really support psychologists on the whole, so has lost ground to anyone who can talk about psychology as most people are interested. As a scientific discipline, it's not surprising that a new theory has come out. Knowledge is ever-changing and tenets of theory building are vast when it comes to human behaviour, and trying to explain other factors or behaviour. There will be other theories. Powerful people and leaders think they know everything (many may be on the clinical side of egocentric, ie. don't listen, for example) so wouldn't be interested in what proper psychological theory and is anyway.

6 Ways Being Mindful Can Make You a Better Leader

6 Ways Being Mindful Can Make You a Better Leader | Psychology in Business & Organisations | Scoop.it
“ As Jon Kabat-Zinn puts it, mindfulness "wakes us up to the fact that our lives unfold only in moments." If we're not fully present for those moments, we may miss what's most valuable in our lives, both personally and professionally. Simply put, mindfulness is about not living in your head all the time and is about paying attention to where you are, what you're doing, or who you're talking to so that you are in touch with the right here, right now. Research shows that mindfulness reduces stress and increases concentration and clarity. Read on for five simple ways to practice mindfulness to improve your personal and professional life.”

Social Media, Bullying, and the Growing Lynch Mob Mentality

Social Media, Bullying, and the Growing Lynch Mob Mentality | Psychology in Business & Organisations | Scoop.it
One of the biggest benefits of social media, whenever you raise the topic of what changes social media has enabled in the bigger picture, is that of freedom of voice for everyone.
Via Riaz Khan
Barbara Lond's insight:
I'm not surprised. There is much research about how groups behave. Social media enables people to hide behind their behaviour and is a factor in bullying (pre social media). I'm not sure anyone really understands this. Bearing in mind younger people are huge users of SM, they need understanding of how this works to protect themselves. Recent research by cognitive scientists now enables this psychological research to be 'seen' in the form of cognitive imaging which shows both changes in the mobber and the mobbed. The researchers also conclude its biological which suggests to me anyway that the mobbed might learn to ignore mobbing behaviour by understanding it more. Actual demonstrations might be useful for young people to understand. I think schools in particular need to understand and could even help with teacher (as mobbed) and pupils (as mobbers). Individuals are different when in groups and we can all be susceptible to changes in behaviour. As an organisational psychologist it's a huge area of interest for me. Important for people to understand how this works, facilitators to really understand.
