By the time they reach age 18, about 12 percent of American children experience a confirmed case of maltreatment in the form of neglect, physical, sexual, or emotional abuse, according to a new study. Men, women use mental health services differently

Men, women use mental health services differently | Psychology Insights | Scoop.it
Women with chronic physical illnesses are more likely to use mental health services than men with similar illnesses. Research shows that they also seek out mental health services six months earlier than those same men. "Chronic physical illness can lead to depression," said the lead author. "We want to better understand who will seek mental health services when diagnosed with a chronic physical illness so we can best help those who need care."
Nancy Cope's insight:

Studies have found that women are socialized very differently from men. Perhaps among possible explanations for these findings is the greater willingness of women versus men, to acknowledge and share personal difficulties rather than keeping a, “stiff upper lip,” taking care of the emotional issues themselves, or simply not acknowledging them at all. I think these responses are changing however and men and women are becoming more and more similar in their approaches to handling personal mental health issues.

Movies with gory, disgusting scenes more likely to capture, engage audience

Movies with gory, disgusting scenes more likely to capture, engage audience | Psychology Insights | Scoop.it
People exposed to core disgusts (blood, guts, body products) showed higher levels of attention the more disgusting the content grew, even though they had negative reactions to the content. The findings suggested that socio-moral disgust-eliciting content elicited a slower response, characterized by one of initial attention and increasing negativity and arousal, and was remembered better before, at and after the onset of disgust. Both core disgusts saw more of an immediate negativity and defensive response.
Nancy Cope's insight:

We really didn't need a study to point out our tendency to be drawn to blood and gore but what does this say about humanity?
