Existential Depression in Gifted Children | The Unbounded Spirit

Existential Depression in Gifted Children | The Unbounded Spirit | Psychology | Scoop.it

"It has been my experience that gifted and talented persons are more likely to experience a type of depression referred to as existential depression. Although an episode of existential depression may be precipitated in anyone…persons of higher intellectual ability are more prone to experience existential depression spontaneously."

Related post: "Sensitive and stressed: Existential Depression" - James T. Webb, Ph.D. writes “It has been my experience that gifted and talented persons are more likely to experience a type of depression referred to as existential depression."  http://highability.org/36/existential-depression/

B Ritt Smetzer's curator insight, February 14, 12:38 PM

This is an article that was published in the "Unbound Spirit." This article touches on the difficulty that children and adults face when they are unable to manage the ups and downs that unfortunately accompany most gifted students. Many gifted individuals encounter "Existential depression" that arises when they are faced with a realization in areas such as death, freedom, isolation, and meaninglessness. They feel helpless and find it hard to grasp the idea that they cannot change certain aspects of their environment.  Many young gifted learners react to these feelings with anger and frustration. This article is very eye-opening for teachers and parents alike.  It is our job to help children cope with the idea of not being able to control everything around them.  These children should not be exposed to situations that may cause these feelings unless it is absolutely necessary.  In the classroom, we must try our best to make sure that the child does not feel isolated or as if they are completing meaningless work. This will cause an acute emotional reaction that can be very hard to handle.  The article recommends keeping an open communication line with your gifted learners and making sure that they never feel alone. This is an amazing article that can surely help parents and teachers of the gifted as well as the gifted themselves.  Knowing why you or a gifted child may develop certain extreme emotions and then knowing how to control them is a great way to promise success overall.
