Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is the most commonly diagnosed psychiatric disorder in children, and is becoming a big deal in adults as well. ADHD is a pile of related symptoms, most of them dealing with motivation, impulsivity, inattention, and, you know hyperactivity (they call it ADHD for a reason).

We don't know what causes ADHD. Yet, this study shows that there is a correlation between motivation and the dopamine system. Scientists are still not sure exactly how this complex system is connected to ADHD, but it appears to impact one's motivation by interfering with the dopamine transporter and receptor network of the brain. In real terms, people with ADHD struggle to feel motivated in tasks that feel tedious, time consuming, boring, or detail oriented. This may be because those tasks are not engaging their brain in a way that flips the dopamine switch.... that says, "Hey, pay attention. This is important." Non-ADHD folks have an easier time flipping that switch to on.
