Chronic and excessive drinking is associated with structural, physiological, and functional changes in multiple regions of the human brain, including the prefrontal cortex, the medial temporal lobe (MTL), as well as structures of the brain’s reward system. This study of the ability of alcohol-dependent (AD) individuals to learn new reward-related contingencies and then transfer this knowledge to new contexts found the AD patients had transfer deficits.

Two psychologists Robert Nash and Melanie Takarangi have identified the perfect population for investigating this very question. 'Drunkorexia:' A recipe for disaster

It is well known that eating disorders are common among teens and college students. Heavy alcohol consumption is another well-known unhealthy habit of this age group. A new study from the University of Missouri shows that when college students combine these two unhealthy habits, their long-term health may be affected. "Drunkorexia" is a new term coined by the media to describe the combination of disordered eating and heavy alcohol consumption.

This article says that if college students who are non-drinkers receive a parent-based intervention in the first few weeks of the semester, they are less likely to start drinking. Also, most heavy drinkers who receive either parent or peer-based intervention don't continue drinking, but if they receive an intervention from both peers and parents, they continue drinking. I think that this information is pretty reliable because it comes from an organisation which talks about the use of alcohol and drugs.
