World Humanitarian Day 2012: Aid Workers in Harm’s Way

 

'Since 2001, the number of aid worker victims who have been killed, wounded/injured, or kidnapped in security incidents has risen dramatically. The majority of these victims are national staff aid workers. Aid workers can be the targets of combatants or collateral casualties caught in the crossfire of conflicts, or they can be victims of criminal attacks, robberies, or kidnapping for ransom. This map, created by HUI, shows the areas where aid workers are most at risk, and highlight the types of attacks experienced in the field over time.'

After their first meeting in 1989, legendary law professor Laurence Tribe was so impressed with the skinny first-year law student in jeans, a sweatshirt and an afro, that he made a special notation on his calendar.

 

'Obama's Harvard Law School education set him on a path to national prominence. And although likely Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney sometimes attacks Obama for having "spent too much time at Harvard," the school is one thing the men have in common.'

When Jon Faine interviewed Tony Abbott on ABC's 774, something unusual happened. The Opposition Leader's careless use of words was actually challenged. Abbott did not further dispute the point

 

'Tony Abbott did not further dispute the point. Like an errant school kid, he seemed to accept the admonishment. Yet within 24 hours, he was again referring to asylum seekers as illegals. Nobody in the media pulled him up. He knew they wouldn't. They rarely do.

 

For the record, he is wrong in domestic and in international law.'
