Twitter frenzies shake up traditional debate tactics - The Drum - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

Twitter frenzies shake up traditional debate tactics - The Drum - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation) | Psycholitics & Psychonomics | Scoop.it
In cyber space no-one can hear you scream but they can sure tell if you're off your game. Barack Obama is finding that out the hard way.

'It's a strange and unfamiliar territory we're in. There have been a few notable exceptions but since 1960 the TV debate has generally been seen as an equation of style over substance - stay upright, don't get wrong-footed, peel off a few one liners and the campaign will move on undisturbed and unaffected by what had become little more than a political ritual.

But the frenzy of online engagement is like performance algebra - a jumble of characters, symbols and short, sharp calculations that somehow end up reaching a conclusion, faster and more efficiently than the old-school campaign long division.

As a result 90 minutes of prime time TV became a political eternity. In cyber space no-one can hear you scream but they can sure tell if you're off your game. They used to say you could tell who won a TV debate even with the sound turned off - but no-one can control the volume of instant messaging. And politicians all over the world are being caught flat-footed by it.'

Why do we watch the US? - On Line Opinion - 30/8/2012

Why do we watch the US? - On Line Opinion - 30/8/2012 | Psycholitics & Psychonomics | Scoop.it
This Melbourne Cup day the first Tuesday of the month will have more riding on it than usual.

'They throw up fascinating characters to follow and watch. I have read endless amounts about George W. Bush's drinking habits, the McCains' marital fights, Sarah Palin's knowledge - or should that be lack of knowledge - of global geography and Obama's Australian girlfriend from his life in New York city in his 20s.

Although I would argue these are engaging stories, their importance is highly questionable. However, given the vanity of much American politics the stories of such potential (and actual) world leaders struggling to live up to their own ambitions is fascinating and hard to resist.'

Obama Made A Strong First Impression At Harvard : NPR

After their first meeting in 1989, legendary law professor Laurence Tribe was so impressed with the skinny first-year law student in jeans, a sweatshirt and an afro, that he made a special notation on his calendar.

'Obama's Harvard Law School education set him on a path to national prominence. And although likely Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney sometimes attacks Obama for having "spent too much time at Harvard," the school is one thing the men have in common.'
