Asylum Seekers A Wicked Problem | newmatilda.com

Asylum Seekers A Wicked Problem | newmatilda.com | Psycholitics & Psychonomics | Scoop.it
No political party has a foolproof solution to the issue of asylum seekers, because such a solution doesn’t exist.

'Asylum seeker policy an example of what the strategists and bureaucrats call a "wicked problem".

Wicked problems, it says, are complex and difficult to define. They often have multiple causes but no single solution or quick fix. They are unstable, shifting and morphing in ways that frustrate a coherent response, and are social by nature, involving many different individuals and agencies, across organisational boundaries, national borders and social divides.

.........It’s that complex interaction between the politics of fear and loathing and the desperation of persecuted people that has made the issue of asylum seekers so insoluble in the long term for the Rudd and Gillard government. It’s a politics of fear that the Opposition was only too willing to embrace after losing office, reasoning that it could only rebound to the Coalition’s advantage'

A rare challenge to Abbott's free pass - The Drum - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

A rare challenge to Abbott's free pass - The Drum - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation) | Psycholitics & Psychonomics | Scoop.it
When Jon Faine interviewed Tony Abbott on ABC's 774, something unusual happened. The Opposition Leader's careless use of words was actually challenged. Abbott did not further dispute the point

'Tony Abbott did not further dispute the point. Like an errant school kid, he seemed to accept the admonishment. Yet within 24 hours, he was again referring to asylum seekers as illegals. Nobody in the media pulled him up. He knew they wouldn't. They rarely do.

For the record, he is wrong in domestic and in international law.'

Low-class Politics, South Australian Policy Online

Low-class Politics, South Australian Policy Online | Psycholitics & Psychonomics | Scoop.it

'Labor is being accused by Tony Abbott of waging class warfare through the Budget. He is on dangerous ground. All the signs are that he and Joe Hockey are preparing to revive much of the policy agenda of the Howard Government and go a few steps further to the right. Hockey is arguing that it is time to dismantle the Australian welfare safety net. They both continue to draw unwelcome attention to the former government's disastrous WorkChoices policy by attacking the Fair Work Act and Fair Work Australia - an opportunity that Julia Gillard relishes. The Prime Minister is always at her best when she has a Coalition industrial relations policy target to aim at.'

'Australian politics is entering a new era, a more uncertain era where the protest vote has the potential to make and break governments more regularly than it has in the past. Both Labor and the Coalition have to grapple with this reality and growing disillusionment with party politics'
