In this article they are looking at the human brain for certain activity over a 12 year time period. They noticed the time period between each kill and graphed it.There are some time periods as short as 3 day or as long as 2 year between every kill which they call this distrpution the "devils staircase."

In this article Joel Norris Interviews 500 convicted serial killers by trying to get the psychology and trying to find out different phases they go through. The first phase is the aura phase where the killer gets withdrawls from the real world. After is the trolling phase which is when the serial killer starts stalking his victims. Then the wooing phase, is when the killers gain confidence of the victims before capturing them. The capture phase, the murder phase is said that the killer reenacts his/her experiances from their childhood. THe totem phase, where they go through a depression, the depression phrase where the fantasy is no longer there and they might just slip.
