Teens are texting more than ever and are showing no signs of slowing, according to a new study. A new report by the Pew Internet & American Life Project revealed that the amount of texts sent and receive each day among teenagers has jumped in the past few years, especially among boys, older teens and African-Americans.

The study looked at the behavior of nearly 800 teens ages 12 to 17 during a three-part survey between April and July 2011 and a series of focus groups involving 57 people ages 12 to 19.

Americo Lopes was the guy who ran the lottery pool among his fellow construction workers in Elizabeth, N.J. He's also the guy who tried to swindle them out of a $38.5-million jackpot, a jury ruled Wednesday. The jury awarded five of Lopes' co-workers a total of $20 million -- or $4 million apiece. Jurors rejected Lopes' claim that the winning ticket belonged to him and him alone, not a pool ticket he'd purchased along with his co-workers.

eBay's latest app combines two of America's favorite pastimes: shopping and watching TV.

While location-based apps like Glancee, Ban.jo, and Sonar have been stealing the show at this year's South by Southwest Interactive Conference (SXSW) in Austin, Texas, the release of the Watch With eBay iPad app made quite a splash, too.

Originally a feature of the eBay for iPad app, Watch With eBay debuted as a standalone app that will let viewers browse in real time products related to their favorite TV programs. Fashion buffs, for example, will easily be able to find and shop for clothes made by designers featured at a red carpet event airing live on TV.

The White House simulated a cyberattack on New York City for an audience of senators Wednesday evening. What would happen to New York City if its power grid was hit by an all-out cyberattack during a summer heat wave?A group of senators found out Wednesday evening during a White House simulation intended to convince Congress to give the government more control over critical privately owned computer systems’ cybersecurity standards.

According to the White House, the scenario was classified, so we don’t know exactly how bad the results would be. But at least one senator, Jay Rockefeller (D-W.Va), said the simulation was “convincing.”

Online dating may be complicated, but California and three industry leaders are aiming to make it safer.The state attorney general’s office announced this week it will work with Match.com, eHarmony.com and Spark Networks to screen for sexual predators, identity thieves and scammers. A joint statement issued Monday notes the prevalence of online dating and says the companies’ main objective is to keep users safe.

The co-founder of the charity group behind the fastest-spreading Internet viral video ever was arrested Thursday for allegedly being drunk in public, vandalizing cars and masturbating, NBC San Diego reported Friday afternoon.

Jason Russell, 33, a filmmaker, was reportedly acting strangely when police picked him up off Ingraham Street in San Diego around noon on Thursday. Officers claim he was seen undressing as he ran through traffic, screaming all the way. Russell did not try to resist officers, the report notes, and was sent to a medical facility for treatment. It is not yet clear what substance he was on, if any.

The jury found Ravi not guilty on several questions within the verdict sheet, but because he was found guilty on at least one question of whether his actions constituted bias discrimination, he could now face the maximum penalty: Up to 10 years in jail and deportation to his native India.

McDonald’s just can’t seem to learn their lesson after two botched Twitter campaigns. In recap, the restaurant launched a Twitter hashtag campaign in January called #McDStories that soon devolved into Twitter users bashing the fast food restaurant. They tried it again a week later with a new, less innocuous campaign called #LittleThings. Too bad for them the campaign was again hijacked by those wanting to mock the brand.

Things have been silent lately on the Twitter front, but McDonald’s launched a new campaign this week to celebrate their annual Shamrock Shake. The hashtag is #shamrocking and it encourages fans of the shake to take a picture of themselves dancing an Irish gig while holding the drink.

Todd Talbot’s recently foreclosed home in Glendale, Arizona was appraised for $127,300 in 2010. Those were the days. Today, people are selling their homes anyway they can and using the latest technology to do so. There are people selling their homes using social media platforms including Twitter and Facebook.

Talbot”s home is currently on the online chopping block and being auctioned. The starting bid for the property was a penny. That’s right, one red cent. Luckily for Todd, or actually for the bank, the bid has risen substantially (at least in the world of penny auctions) to $2.42 as of Tuesday morning. According to ABC News, this is the first penny auction for a house.

Throwboy is touting the Steve Jobs stuffed toy as a limited-edition collector’s item, as only 1,200 have been made.

Reporters Without Borders has released a list of “Enemies of the Internet,” highlighting countries that restrict freedom of expression.

 

The list‘s release coincides with World Day Against Cyber Censorship, March 12, a day the organization started in 2008 to rally the world behind an open Internet.

The list includes 12 “Internet Enemies” and 14 “countries under surveillance.”
