Police arrest man who burned more than 100 cars

Police arrest man who burned more than 100 cars | Prozac Moments | Scoop.it
A man who set fire to more than 100 cars in Berlin, a wave of attacks blamed by some on political extremists, was motivated by envy and frustration, police who arrested him said Sunday. The 27-year-old told police that being jobless and in debt led him to set 67 luxury cars alight in one three-month run.

Those attacks, aimed mostly at luxury cars such as Audi, BMW and Mercedes, set alight 35 more cars parked nearby. The near-nightly attacks, often started by slow-burning barbecue fire lighters, had baffled police and left them looking inept in the midst of a mayoral election.

"This is a sensational triumph," said Berlin state crime office (LKA) director Christian Steiof. A second police official told a media conference that the man confessed to setting 67 cars on fire since June in Germany's poorest big city. read more...

A feminist blogger traveling to Dublin, Ireland recently made an unsettling discovery in her luggage: a U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) agent had searched the bag and found her vibrator, and apparently felt inspired enough to leave a handwritten note.

“GET YOUR FREAK ON GIRL,” the alleged agent wrote.

It’s almost as if a scene from the film “Fight Club” decided to leap off the screen and ditch the politeness.

Women, swearing and the workplace

Women, swearing and the workplace | Prozac Moments | Scoop.it

In the wake of Carol Bartz's ouster from Yahoo, the former CEO's penchant for blunt, profane language has become a recurring theme in coverage of her career. It's not every day you read about one top-level executive asking another where his balls are. But in the end, former Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz lived up to her reputation for "salty language" and candid management style.Since Bartz's very public departure from Yahoo last week, her penchant for blunt, profane language has become recurring themes in discussions of her career, driving conversation about what women can and can't be in the workplace.

"It stands out because it's not expected," said Deborah Tannen, a linguistics professor at Georgetown University and author of "You Just Don't Understand: Women and Men in Conversation."

"We always take notice of what's unexpected and women are still not expected to curse, so when they do, it's noticed more."

Dunder Mifflin Also Releases a Tablet -- And It's a Triangle [VIDEO] | Prozac Moments | Scoop.it

The biggest fictional tablet release was "The Pyramid" on Thusday's The Office on NBC. Amazon shook up the tablet market this week with its Kindle Fire, but the big news in fictional tablet introductions occurred on The Office Thursday night.

In the episode, Dwight Schrute (Rainn Wilson) presents the triangle-shaped tablet, called “The Pyramid,” to a roomful of skeptical employees.

The device itself is hilarious, but maybe not so much to real-life executives at Hewlett-Packard and RIM, whose own tablets have gotten a similar reception, albeit in a less amusing fashion.

A North Carolina abortion rights group revealed Monday that most “crisis pregnancy centers” (CPC) in the state were misleading women about their health care options.

A NARAL Pro-Choice North Carolina Foundation (NPCNCF) report (PDF) found that more than two-thirds of CPCs provided medically inaccurate information. In one of the more disturbing anecdotes from the report, an investigator posing as a pregnant Jewish woman was told by five centers that she would not go to heaven unless she converted to Christianity. At one meeting, volunteers prayed for an investigator and recommended she become a “born-again virgin.”

Fla. lawmaker files bill to repeal ban on 'dwarf tossing'

Fla. lawmaker files bill to repeal ban on 'dwarf tossing' | Prozac Moments | Scoop.it

A Florida state legislator wants to repeal a bill against "drawrf tossing" that he says is an example of regulatory intrusion by Big Brother government, the Palm Beach Post reports. The dangerous barroom spectacle, which was imported from Australia, thrived in Florida before it was outlawed in 1989. Violators can be fined $1,000 and lose their liquor licenses.

Rep. Ritch Workman, a Republican from Melbourne, agrees that the spectacle is "repulsive and stupid," but says that's not reason for the government to get involved. He introduced his bill Monday.

UNBELIEVABLE!!!!
City may even repeal part of city code that bans wife beating. Cash-strapped Topeka, Kansas, has decided to stop prosecuting domestic violence casses in order to save money.

The City Council announced the proposal Oct. 4, after the Shawnee County District Attorney's office announced it could no longer prosecute misdemeanors, including domestic violence cases. The city's maneuver may even require repealing the part of the city code that bans domestic battery. Mayor Bill Bunten told the Topeka Capital-Journal city officials take domestic violence seriously, and it would be "dead wrong" to assume offenders won't be prosecuted. But the dispute is over who would pay for it, he said.

Facebook: Ban All Holocaust Denial Pages and Groups.

Facebook: Ban All Holocaust Denial Pages and Groups. | Prozac Moments | Scoop.it
Holocaust denial is one of the most insidious forms of hate speech. It targets a religious group in that it is based on the claim that either the Holocaust never happened, or that it was exaggerated by Jews in order to advance their own political and economic interests. Evidence of the Holocaust is well documented. Most people who join a Holocaust Denial or Holohoax group are not there to have an honest debate regarding its occurrence, or to study history. That is a pretext. Rather, they are there to distort the truth, to push an agenda of anti-Semitism, and to find like-minded people.

Facebook is a private company with terms of service to which all of its members agreed. Facebook has set its own standards regarding allowable forms of speech on its site and has banned many types of speech that may otherwise be allowed under the first amendment of the U.S. Constitution. Facebook does not allow pictures of nudity or graphic violence, comments that harass, annoy, or target an individual, or hate speech. The latter includes comments that target an ethnic, racial or religious group.

Therefore, by its own standards, and in keeping with the majority of international opinion where in many countries Holocaust Denial is a crime, Facebook can and should ban Holocaust Denial pages and groups as a form of hate speech...

Perugia, Italy (CNN) -- A jury cleared Amanda Knox of murder and other charges on Monday, nearly four years after she was arrested on suspicion of having killed her roommate in this picturesque Italian university town.

The jury evidently believed Knox's impassioned final statement to the court, delivered in a voice trembling with emotion.

"I am not what they say I am -- perverse, violent. ... I haven't murdered. I haven't raped. I haven't stolen," Knox said in the most important speech of her life. Her co-defendant, Raffaele Sollecito, was also cleared of involvement in Kercher's death.

"We're thankful that Amanda's nightmare is over," Knox's sister, Deanna, said on the courthouse steps, getting a roar of approval from the crowd. "She suffered for four years for a crime she did not commit."
