One of the most devastating tornados in U.S. history tore through Oklahoma City Monday, wreaking considerable damage to the suburb of Moore.

The Oklahoma City medical examiner's spokesperson originally reported at least 51 deaths, including 20 children, though those counts are no longer thought accurate. The storm reduced homes to piles of rubble and destroyed entire neighborhoods. Two elementary schools, one in Moore and another on the town's border with Oklahoma City, were among the devastated buildings.

A fake tweet that claimed President Obama had been injured after explosions went off at the White House was quickly debunked by the Associated Press, which said its Twitter account had been hacked.

“This small tweet created some chaos in the United States in addition to a decline in some U.S. stocks,” the Syrian Electronic Army wrote on its website, referring to a brief, steep drop in the Dow Jones Industrial Average. It claimed credit for hijacking both @AP and @AP_Mobile.

The Senate contends that Apple set up subsidiaries in other countries for which it paid no taxes to any government. However, Apple says the units were not designed to avoid taxes, but because the company sells the majority — 61% — of its products outside the U.S. The subcommittee is looking especially at Apple's Cork, Ireland, subsidiary from which it runs its European, African, Middle Eastern, Indian and Asian operations. Apple claims it pays local taxes on overseas earnings and pays U.S. taxes on income from its Irish units.

In the three years since its launch, the SDO has observed the sun as it ramps up to “solar maximum,” which is the peak of the star’s 11-year solar activity cycle. To demonstrate this increase in the sun’s activity, NASA this week released a video that puts together many of the images taken by the SDO. The time-lapsed video shows two images of the sun per day for three years. It also has some nice background music (“A Lady’s Errand of Love” by Martin Lass).
