Interactive Light Display Transforms Moroccan Church into a Multicolored, Reactive Art Experience | PROYECTO ESPACIOS | Scoop.it

Sacré Coeur in Casablanca, Morocco was designed by French architect Paul Tournon in 1930. The cathedral's underuse (religious functions ceased in 1956) combined with its vaulting Neo-Gothic breadth, makes it the perfect venue for cultural engagement. 


Cue the lights: From April 3 - 6, French transmedia installation designer Miguel Chevalier bedecked the halls with Magic Carpets 2014, a projected animation that turned the institution's massive floor into a multicolored, reactive art experience.

To build an inhabitable luminaire you need little more than colored plastic sheeting and an air compressor and the ability to expose said construction to natural light. The finished products are far greater than the sum of the parts, producing results that seem to suggest a series of more elaborately ornamented James Turrell installations. They are the brainchildren of Architects of Air (AoA), a British company that has erected temporary luminaires throughout Europe, Asia, and the United States.

AoA cites Islamic architecture and Gothic cathedrals as inspirations behind their structures. While at times they wear these influences on their sleeves, at other times they appear capable of producing wholly alien experiences. Outside light filters through custom-made semi-translucent PVC. Each structure’s walls are rendered in four colors which are used to produce the variety of hues that bath the interiors. The process is akin to creating a stained glass, a similarity occasionally made quite explicit through confetti-filled design flourishes that evoke cathedral windows.

Adaptable Architecture: Meeting Dome by Kristoffer Tejlgaard & Benny Jepsen

Adaptable Architecture: Meeting Dome by Kristoffer Tejlgaard & Benny Jepsen | PROYECTO ESPACIOS | Scoop.it
Canadian architects Kristoffer Tejlgaard and Benny Jepsen have slightly altered the mathematical elements of a geodesic dome to form a new modular pavilion.


By using different sized triangular frames with both spherical and perpendicular surfaces, a new lattice form was birthed from that of a traditional geodesic dome. The result is a method of construction that allows surfaces to be extruded, scaled, pushed and pulled while maintaining logic.
Through this altered composition, small niches and crevices opened. Steel footings connect the wooden frame, made of locally-sourced pine. Steel nodes were made to fit standard rafter sizes, making the whole design movable.
The façade's curved surfaces are covered with recycled wood panels, creating opaque faces. Perpendicular surfaces made of PVC film allow light to enter while opening views to the outside. The project was commissioned by BL (Denmark Public Housing) for the Peoples Meeting in Denmark.

Phillip Echaroux desired to give something back to his hometown of Marseille, and he found that the projector could provide a way for him to gift back his talent.

Throughout the beautiful coastal city, Echaroux projected portraits and designs on street walls, buildings, trees and hillsides. Some of the projections extended larger than 300 feet and could be seen from great distances.

Rotterdam’s Floating Pavilion by Deltasync and PublicDomain Architects is the first pilot project for a sustainable floating district.


In an effort to address the challenges of climate change and sea level rise, the City of Rotterdam has started to build some intriguing floating structures. The first pilot project is a catalyst for climate change-proof architecture called the Floating Pavilion that consists of three connected hemispheres that look like bubbles anchored within the Dutch city’s old harbor.

An initiative of Rotterdam Climate Proof (part of the Rotterdam Climate Initiative), the mixed-use pavilion was designed by Deltasync and Public Domain Architects, and it sets an unprecedented example for innovative, sustainable and climate-proof architecture.
