A New University Building Design Promotes Sustainable Development In Vietnam | PROYECTO ESPACIOS | Scoop.it

Vietnam-based architect firm Vo Trong Nghia Architects designed an environmentally-friendly structure for FPT University that is located about 34 km away from Hanoi.
The façade of the seven-story building is designed to look like a checkerboard, with huge floor trees placed in the openings. The openings also let in lots of natural sunlight, saving on energy.
Measuring at 11,065-square-meters, the structure will also feature a green roof to protect the whole building from too much sunlight.
According to the architects, “the structure is intended to promote sustainable development in Vietnam,” and “instill sustainable practices in the future generations”.

A proposal by Vo Trong Nghia Architects to build towering bamboo structures modelled on lotus pods has been selected for Vietnam's pavilion at the World Expo 2015 in Milan.

Responding to the expo's theme "Feeding the Planet, Energy for life", the architects describe the consumption of the lotus – Vietnam's national flower – as an example for sustainable living.

Marcel Sembat High School in Sotteville-lès-Rouen, France by Archi5 is an example of how architecture uses technology in surprising ways. 

Part of a larger rehabilitation of the high school, the new workshop building features a series of linear bars, each with a sloped green roof. Small patios between these volumes open to create skylights, with daylight entering through large windows created by the offset of the linear volumes, illuminating the large workshops.

The environmental technology in the building is mostly passive. Located on a site between a park and the city with a large, the north-facing facade opens up to city views, while the southern side has smaller windows shaded by overhangs. The difference between the two heights creates the shape of the building, while the green roof helps deflect wind and creates a low-maintenance green plaza.

Este sorprendente proyecto se localiza en las proximidades de la ciudad de Rouen, al NO de París. 


Obra del estudio de arquitectura francés Archi5 en colaboración con B. Huidobro, ha sido premiado en el certamen Architizer A+ Awards de 2014 en la categoría de "Tipología". 


Como se puede observar en la imagen adjunta, su principal características es el techo verde con el que se ha cubierto el edificio destinado a la enseñanza de mecánica. La integración con un cercano parque urbano es impresionante.


La comunidad bonaerense de arquitectura y diseño Arqa se hizo eco de este proyecto en 2011, incluyendo en su entrada imágenes de algunos de los planos. En los mismos se puede apreciar que uno de los principales escollos que se tuvieron que salvar fue la calle que divide los distintos edificios de los que se compone el liceo. No obstante, el problema se solucionó con la construcción de un edificio-puente.

In Dongnai, Vietnam, Vo Trong Nghia Architects has completed the construction of ‘farming kindergarten’, a large pre-school designed to accommodate up to 500 children. The project is envisioned as a model of sustainability set within the tropical climate, allowing the school’s young inhabitants to understand the importance of sustainable education and design.

A fully accessible green roof drawn in a triple-ring-shape creates three courtyards enclosed by the looping structure, providing safe and secure playgrounds for the kindergarten’s occupants. The different levels and gradients created by the building’s spiral form offer a series of distinct outdoor learning environments, where children are able to forge a close relationship with the natural world.

Architecture firm Snøhetta has unveiled images of a snake-like hotel that will wind across a rocky outcrop in Norway's Lofoten archipelago.

The site extends out to sea to the south and west, linking the contact between ocean and the tall, shielding mountains to the north and northwest. The location is spectacular, sunny, in the mighty landscape elements, yet in touch with old settlement and sheltered harbors.

Snøhetta has developed a project and looked at a number of factors: the landscape "critical load" vs. new construction, functional and technical aspects of access, infrastructure, ecology and sustainability, connection to outdoors areas and existing buildings. The main goal is to find the development patterns and shapes that trigger the functional, architectural and experiential triggers the plot's formidable potential. We think it will be essential to find a building program and a scale that "hits", both in terms of economy, market and individual experience opportunities.

My husband CANNOT live without his sunshine. Here in Lisbon they used ceramic tiles to move more light into the rooms. We angle a mirror to reflect the sunshine into our kitchen on cold days - toasty!

The Fogo Island Inn and art gallery designed by Saunders Architecture is situated on the rugged coast of Newfoundland, Canada. The 29 guest rooms all face the ocean and look onto the fishing grounds that originally attracted people to Fogo Island centuries ago.


From the architect:

Ecological and self-sustaining systems were subtly integrated from the beginning of the project, incorporating technologies to reduce and conserve energy and water usage. The inn is a highly insulated steel frame building and the windows have the equivalent rating of triple pane glazing. Rainwater from the roof is collected into two cisterns in the basement, filtered, and used for the toilet and laundry water and also to be used as a heat sink for all of the kitchen appliances. Solar thermal panels supply hot water to the in-floor radiant heating as well as the laundry and kitchen equipment. The sound transmission classification of 69 between guest rooms ensures that guests hear only the sound of the nearby waves. The outbuilding houses wood fired boilers and solar thermal panels on the roof. The required number and orientation of the solar panels dictated the form of the outbuilding.

Designs Northwest Architects have recently completed the Tsunami House, located on Camano Island in Washington State, a waterfront home located on a 3,140 square foot site in a high velocity flood zone.

The 887 square foot main living level is be located 5′ above grade and the foundations are designed on pilings to withstand high velocity tsunami wave action. The lower 748 square foot space is designed with walls able to break away in the event of a storm surge.

The exterior materials of the house are durable and low maintenance; architectural concrete columns are left exposed and the exterior siding is a mixture of composite and galvanized standing seam panels and aluminum windows. The lower level floor is polished concrete with radiant in floor heat and the ceilings are covered with western red cedar to add warmth to the otherwise industrial feeling of the lower level...

Luminous Moon-Gate was designed in 2013 for the Taichung City Cultural Center International Competition. The objective was to design a public library and fine arts museum to distinguish itself as a city with arts and culture at its core. To achieve this, the design firm was tasked with creating accessible, attractive, and flexible space, and a rich social and recreational learning environment.

The Moon-Gate follows the philosophy that, with a commitment to improving society, architecture is inherently sustainable. High porosity between buildings allows wind to freely flow around the exteriors; low porosity materials facilitate better control over water and heat retention. Filtration systems throughout the interior and under-slab ventilation maintain steady temperatures. High-efficiency photovoltaic panels installed on top of the library and museum take advantage of the large surface area exposed to the sun, while energy-efficient lighting provides energy savings.

New Holland Agriculture have chosen the winner of the international competition for their 1,500 square meters pavilion at the World Expo 2015 in Milan. The proposal, by Carlo Ratti Associati, is called Earth Screening, and features an agricultural field on its roof, similar to a giant 3D printer thanks to the constant activity of two robotized, self-driving tractors.

Emanuela Recchi, chairman of Recchi Engineering, describes Earth Screening as “a pavilion capable of expressing the principles of sustainability, efficiency, and energy production of a modern ‘Sustainable Farm’.” The design concept proposes an innovative and efficient pavilion, allowing visitors to interact with the latest research, products and innovations developed by New Holland.

The aim is that the energy for the pavilion – including that for the selfdriving tractors on the roof – will be generated on site. After the Expo, the New Holland pavilion will be dismantled and reconstructed in a second location as an innovative didactic farm, embodying the very idea of recycling and sustainability.

The Port of Seville needed a new Cruise Ship Terminal with a flexible character, multipurpose, extendable, easily removable and even movable.

This would permit to accomodate the unpredictable number of passengers in the port and it does not limit the possibilities of the urban-port valuable space of the Muelle de las Delicias. The Port Authority itself proposed to solve the project using sea containers. On the other hand, the place, near the historic centre, was claiming an object of architectural quality that would promote the dialogue between the port and its urban environment.

The on-site construction work could only last 15 days, the maximum time between two consecutive cruises docking. The modular construction with recycled shipping containers would be mostly finished in workshop, ensuring the precision of the on-site work...

By 2025, Abu Dhabi’s Masdar City (planned by Foster and Partners) will have 50,000 inhabitants and be the world’s first zero-carbon community. Sheppard Robson’s latest addition to the plan, Siemens Middle East Headquarters, is one of the project’s most sustainable buildings to date – realised at a cost of a conventional office

The optimisation of the office’s interior – being wholly column-free, divisible into 32 separate offices and punctured with shaded light-wells, as well as highly efficient use of building materials – meant that more budget could be allocated to the much-needed, high-performance envelope. Furthermore, it is hoped that the spatial flexibility of the interior will expand the building’s functional lifespan.

This results in the use of highly insulating, airtight façade and aluminium fins that block out direct sunlight.

Seven concrete fins provide a green roof that collects rainwater at this new engineering facility for a wastewater treatment plant in Portland, Oregon.

The new single-storey building was oriented along the path of the sun featuring seven folded cast-in-place concrete roof forms that channel storm water sustainably through the eco-roof. The storm water then drains along the berms into a visible storm water collection system leading back to the Columbia Slough.

As an intentional demonstration, the building and its immediate landscape employ signage and educational elements to celebrate the Columbia Slough ecosystem where the project is located as well as share information about the regional watershed. Inspired by the native landscape and its industrial past, the building is an elegant combination of landform, indigenous planting, formal geometry, and durable construction systems that support staff and the public interface.

Some states have been more proactive in getting LEED-certified buildings built than others. Which has the most sustainable square feet per citizen?

People don't usually think of Illinois as the greenest state in the union, but it happens to have the most green buildings per capita, according to the latest figures from the U.S. Green Building Council. California had the most projects overall. States like Louisiana and Montana? Not so much.

Stonehenge’s long-awaited visitor centre- a lightweight, delicate structure by Denton Corker m\Marshall- has opened its doors to the public. The building provides the 5,000 year old monument with dedicated on-site educational facilities and exhibition space, designed to accommodate over one million guests each year.


Ensuring the sustainability of the project, the design was as sensitive to its surroundings as possible, whereby if the building were to be removed, it would not leave a lasting scar on the landscape. Steel columns and lightweight walls minimize the depth of the foundations, allowing the design to sit on a slender concrete raft.

Recyclable and renewable materials have been used alongside locally sourced components, such as regionally grown chestnut and limestone cut from nearby quarries. In addition, the large canopy naturally shades the building, promoting natural ventilation, while a ground source heat pump provides warmth for the centre during cooler months.

The largest natural biome in the world is the maroon colored Taiga, a Russian word for forest, covering large parts of Canada, Europe and Asia with coniferous forests.

The term “Boreal” forest refers to the southern part of this biome and has heavier tree cover while the Taiga refers to the northern portion which is a mostly barren area that borders the Arctic treeline. In order to understand how biomes work, scientists and researchers have created projects like Biosphere and Eden.

The design refers to the integration of architectural structures into natural ecosystems, emphasizing a symbiotic relationship between buildings, landscapes, people and nature.

Patrick Nadeau's experimental wave-shaped house gets built in France.

From the architect: The house is alive, changing its appearance, colour and odour with the seasons. New plants can be brought by the wind, insects or birds and gives the building a certain character or even a fallow ground-wave, hence the name La Maison-vague, which could equally and poetically signify an ocean wave or an open field.

Esto es en Francia, pero no es necesario estar en un país europeo o con 4 estaciones para poder desarrollar proyectos similares en este país, en el que casi que es innecesario sembrar el techo, ya que la naturaleza puede, y lo haría, cubrir con un manto vegetal ese techo terrado.

Cada vez se ve mas la intencion de los ciudadanos por construir viviendas verdes o techos verdes. Una tendencia actual mundial. Es importante conocer los metodos y el mantenimiento de dichas estructuras, asi como tambien el clima en el que es favorable implementar este tipo de vivienda.
