London's future skyline captured in new visualiations

London's future skyline captured in new visualiations | PROYECTO ESPACIOS | Scoop.it

This series of images by architectural rendering studio Hayes Davidson envisages how London's skyline might look in 20 years time.

Over 200 towers with a height of 20 storeys or greater are planned in the UK capital over the next two decades and Hayes Davidson has visualised how these new buildings will appear alongside existing skyscrapers such as Renzo Piano's The Shard and Norman Foster's The Gherkin.

The images were created for an exhibition opening later this year at New London Architecture (NLA) entitled London's Growing... Up! which will chart the growth of tall building construction in London since the 1960s and look at the impact skyscrapers will have on the city in the near future.

"As London's population gets bigger and bigger, and new development for London takes place within the constraints of the green belt, we have to increase the density of the city," said Peter Murray, who is chairman of NLA and the exhibition curator.

An Innovative Net-Zero Prefab in Los Angeles

An Innovative Net-Zero Prefab in Los Angeles | PROYECTO ESPACIOS | Scoop.it
A net-zero prefab home design is set to reinvigorate a down-at-the-heels Los Angeles neighborhood.

In 2011, Restore Neighborhoods Los Angeles (RNLA), a nonprofit that invests in housing, sent out a request for affordable, sustainable designs for lots in the city’s South Central area. “We very much want to introduce new design ideas and new technologies to low- and moderate-income districts,” explains John Perfitt, executive director. “Good design and new construction methods can, over time, have a very positive influence in restoring neighborhoods.”

After whittling down the field from nine proposals, they selected a net-zero prefab design submitted by Habitat for Humanity and Minarc, a Santa Monica–based architecture firm known for its innovative, energy-efficient kit houses. Thanks to a streamlined, waste-free construction method and affordable materials, like cement board cladding and Cradle to Cradle–certified panels, the firm’s three 1,200-square-foot homes came in at the requisite $150 per square foot—including foundation, trans- portation of the modular components, and rooftop solar panels that offset 95 percent of the structures’ energy demands...

Los Angeles Museum of the Holocaust by Belzberg Architects

Los Angeles Museum of the Holocaust by Belzberg Architects | PROYECTO ESPACIOS | Scoop.it

From the architect.

The new building for the Los Angeles Museum of the Holocaust (LAMOTH) is located within a public park, adjacent to the existing Los Angeles Holocaust Memorial.  Paramount to the design strategy is the integration of the building into the surrounding open, park landscape. The museum is submerged into the ground allowing the park’s landscape to continue over the roof of the structure.  Existing park pathways are used as connective elements to integrate the pedestrian flow of the park with the new circulation for museum visitors.

By maintaining the material pallet of the park and extending it onto the museum, the hues and textures of concrete and vegetation blend with the existing material palette of Pan Pacific Park. Designed and constructed with sustainable systems and materials, the LAMOTH building is on track to receive a LEED Gold Certification from the US Green Building Council.

Last spring the MUTEK Festival and the Society for Arts and Technology [SAT] released DROMOS, an immersive experience based on the science of speed. Although the festival's central mandate is to promote the best of electronic music, it also runs the parallel mission of showing off the best in innovative audiovisual material. Fresh off the success of their first collaborative work and the glowing response from viewers and the media, Mathieu Le Sourd a.k.a Maotik, and Eric Raynaud, a.k.a Fraction, are back this Wednesday with a whole new interactive, living installation.

Cineteca Nacional Siglo XXI by Rojkind Arquitectos, Mexico City

Cineteca Nacional Siglo XXI by Rojkind Arquitectos, Mexico City | PROYECTO ESPACIOS | Scoop.it

With an expansion of Mexico City's Cineteca Nacional, Rojkind Arquitectos has turned a repository for Mexico's cinematic history into a public space that welcomes the sometimes unruly life of this teeming city.

Commissioned by the National Council of Culture and the Arts (Conaculta), the firm proposed a master plan for the 311,000-square-foot complex that expanded the Cineteca's facilities and gave them the feeling of an urban park. In addition to four new 180-seat theaters and new archive buildings, the plan adds a bookstore, café, and restaurant, as well as a bar serving ice cream, all set around two grassy lawns. “We didn't want it to feel like you're in the lobby of a commercial cinema,” says firm principal Michel Rojkind. “We wanted it to feel more like a university campus, with everything floating in a park.”

Retractable Roof House Kinetically Adapted to the Climate of Melbourne

Retractable Roof House Kinetically Adapted to the Climate of Melbourne | PROYECTO ESPACIOS | Scoop.it

As the name suggests, the Convertible Courtyards House, by Christopher Megowan Design, kinetically adapts to the notoriously variable climate found in Melbourne, Australia. This project added a kitchen, living area, dining area, bathroom, master bedroom, ensuite and two decks to a previously overlooked yet charming weatherboard cottage in the inner urban suburb of Prahran. Nestled on an intimate street, the existing house is one of a series of heritage protected cottages. In response to the north-facing block of land, a central courtyard was created between the weatherboard and modern extension in order to flood the open kitchen, living and dining area with natural light...

Day-in-the-life: Living in an apartment with moving parts

Day-in-the-life: Living in an apartment with moving parts | PROYECTO ESPACIOS | Scoop.it

The resident of a compact apartment in Madrid demonstrates how she can rearrange walls and pull furniture out of the ceiling in a movie by photographer and filmmaker Miguel de Guzmán.

Designed by Spanish studio Elii Architects, the Didomestic apartment occupies the loft of an old building, so it was designed to make optimal use of space by creating flexible rooms that can be adapted for different activities.

The architects also added several fun elements to tailor the space to the resident's lifestyle; a hammock, playground swing and disco ball all fold down from the ceiling, while a folding surface serves as a cocktail bar or ironing board.

10 Climate-Sensitive Contemporary Homes That Beat Seattle's Rainy Season

10 Climate-Sensitive Contemporary Homes That Beat Seattle's Rainy Season | PROYECTO ESPACIOS | Scoop.it

On average, Seattle experiences 150 days of rain and 201 cloudy days per year, even though other cities like New York, Boston, and D.C. average more overall rainfall each year.

Indeed, the city's Pacific Northwestern climate has influenced nearly all aspects of Seattle's culture—including its robust architectural heritage. While many historic structures in Seattle derive from the Queen Anne style (including an entire neighborhood named after it), more recently the city has evolved into a hub for high-performing sustainable architecture that takes its climate into special consideration...

KSP Designs Floating ‘Urban Helix’ for Changsha

KSP Designs Floating ‘Urban Helix’ for Changsha | PROYECTO ESPACIOS | Scoop.it

KSP Jürgen Engel Architekten International has been awarded first prize for their proposal of a new “urban helix” in Changsha, China, that extends public space from the city center into Lake Meixi. The concept serves as a catalyst, marking a termination point on a new street axis that culminates into a pedestrian ramp symbolically spiraling 30 meters above a 20,000 square meter artificial island.

Considered as a “city built from scratch,” Changsha has been host to a slew of architectural and urbanist projects in recent years. From Zaha Hadid’s ambitious Culture and Arts Centre to KPF’s 120 million square foot master plan, the city has been an experimental hot bed, expecting to grow to 180,000 inhabitants within the coming years...

The 22,600-square-foot boathouse, which cost $8.8 million to construct, continues to demonstrate Gang's interest in the Chicago River and her commitment to turning the much-abused waterway into a public amenity.

Sustainable-design strategies were woven in throughout the project—from planting a pair of small “rain gardens” and using permeable concrete on the plaza (so no rainwater runs off the site) to providing enough daylighting to reduce dependence on electric fixtures...

What the Interstate Highway System Should Have Looked Like

What the Interstate Highway System Should Have Looked Like | PROYECTO ESPACIOS | Scoop.it

This anecdote has been told at Cities before but it bears repeating: Eisenhower himself didn't realize the Interstate Highway System would cut through American cities until a few years after construction began. Ike had wanted a national road network like the one he'd seen in Germany during World War II. But he'd also wanted these roads to stop at the doorsteps of cities, not push right past.

That story comes to mind reading a recent paper from University of Southern California scholar Marlon Boarnet in this month's Transport Policy. Boarnet outlines a series of lessons that developing countries might learn from America's great road expansion experiment. By far the most compelling is his suggestion that the Interstate Highway System should have been two distinct systems: one running between cities, and another running within them
