An Economical Modular Prefab in Oregon

An Economical Modular Prefab in Oregon | PROYECTO ESPACIOS | Scoop.it

The brief was basic: a simple guesthouse for a familyto live while Bohlin Cywinski Jackson designed their main residence. The architect's design for the is instantly legible with a repetition of trusses, windows, and lumber creating a strong linear profile.

A standard, repeatable, four-foot-wide bay makes use of economical, available materials, such as open-web steel trusses, plywood, laminated veneer lumber, and an insulated aluminum window system. The resulting residence is linear, with an open-plan kitchen and living space, 3 bedrooms, and an office with views over the Cascade Range.

MAD Envisions More ‘Natural’ Chinese Cities in the Future

MAD Envisions More ‘Natural’ Chinese Cities in the Future | PROYECTO ESPACIOS | Scoop.it

Ma Yansong of MAD recently presented a 600,000 square meter urban design proposal for the city of Nanjing titled, “Shanshui Experiment Complex,” at the 2013 Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism / Architecture in Shenzhen, China. The concept takes into account the culture, nature and history of Nanjing while reconsidering the methodology in which Chinese cities are built.

Yasong’s vision of a natural urban environment calls upon traditional Chinese values, veering away from a purely functionalist approach to city-making. Thus, the rigidness of the “box” is replaced with flowing lines that rhythmically rise to create a series of smooth spaces and volumes resulting in a more natural (looking) skyline.

Creative and Energy-Efficient: Leura Lane House in Australia

Creative and Energy-Efficient: Leura Lane House in Australia | PROYECTO ESPACIOS | Scoop.it

Showcasing an original architecture and design, the Leura Lane house is a two bedroom residence envisioned by Australian firm Cooper Scaife Architects.

As one approaches the building site, the unconventional shapes of the pavilions become clear. Each of the two volumes displays a skillion roof above a more common wood and glass structure.

One of the dwellings contains a carport and storerooms, while the other accommodates living quarters. According to the architects, “the independence of these two pavilions gives complete flexibility to orientate the carport to face the street, while the living areas of the house can be oriented north or towards preferred views“.

Passive design principles, readily available materials and standard construction methods were used to create an energy-efficient home design.

Stonehenge Visitor Centre by Denton Corker Marshall opens

Stonehenge Visitor Centre by Denton Corker Marshall opens | PROYECTO ESPACIOS | Scoop.it

Stonehenge’s long-awaited visitor centre- a lightweight, delicate structure by Denton Corker m\Marshall- has opened its doors to the public. The building provides the 5,000 year old monument with dedicated on-site educational facilities and exhibition space, designed to accommodate over one million guests each year.

Ensuring the sustainability of the project, the design was as sensitive to its surroundings as possible, whereby if the building were to be removed, it would not leave a lasting scar on the landscape. Steel columns and lightweight walls minimize the depth of the foundations, allowing the design to sit on a slender concrete raft.

Recyclable and renewable materials have been used alongside locally sourced components, such as regionally grown chestnut and limestone cut from nearby quarries. In addition, the large canopy naturally shades the building, promoting natural ventilation, while a ground source heat pump provides warmth for the centre during cooler months.

Over 4,000 Plastic Bags Recycled Into Giant Illuminated Tree | PROYECTO ESPACIOS | Scoop.it
Initially launched as part of the Lumiere Festival in Durham, England, Spanish art collective Luzinterruptus'Consumerist Christmas Tree is made entirely form repurposed plastic bags and hopes to "challenge our addiction to plastic bags and consider the environmental consequences of our throw-away society at a time of the year when our consumption hits an annual high.Created in the main shopping area of the city, ironically this monument to wasteful consumerism was sponsored by the association of merchants, and will remain there till the end of the holidays.Though masterminded by the Luzinterruptus, the project also required extra hands (and trash), which was amply provided by local residents, who donated up to 4,000 units of plastic bags which were then exchanged for cloth replacements.

Designing The Innovation Economy: Using Technology To Shape The Future City

Designing The Innovation Economy: Using Technology To Shape The Future City | PROYECTO ESPACIOS | Scoop.it
With technological change marching forward at a rapid clip, city environments are being reshaped and the urban experience is being reimagined.

Nearly ubiquitous mobile access has provided visitors and residents with the ability to unlock the “secrets” of the city, opening the door to new experiences and improving livability and user-friendliness. However, in order to make the best of these changes, policy must welcome and support innovation and the urban transformation that accompanies it—and there’s no one-size-fits-all formula...

The Most Walkable Cities and How Some Are Making Strides

The Most Walkable Cities and How Some Are Making Strides | PROYECTO ESPACIOS | Scoop.it

Densely populated neighborhoods, commercial district city squares and multiple public transit lines all span the city of Cambridge, Mass., creating an environment ideal for walking.

The most recent Census counts estimate nearly a quarter of the city’s residents walk to work, far more than any other larger U.S. city.

Many localities across the country are continuing to push policies and planning initiatives aimed at making communities more walkable. Recent census figures depict a wide variation in commuting habits among the nation’s urban centers, showing some have done much more than others.

Nationally, only a small fraction of people primarily walk to work – the measure the Census Bureau estimates in its annual American Communities Survey. In a select group of cities, though, recent data illustrates the extent to which walking has emerged as an everyday means of commuting.

This interactive bicycle and light artwork by VVM illuminates a passage of the Rijksmuseum in the Netherlands.

Installed as part of the Amsterdam light festival, ‘Lightbattle’ consists of an open arch of nearly five thousand fluorescent tubes, spanning over a cycling lane. Five bicycles are positioned on each side, offering a challenge for passersby to pedal bright blue and red lights from one side of the walkway to the other. Energy is generated as they pedal, not only determining the strongest rider but also creating a radiated arch as they try and defeat their opponents.

Bass and Flinders Gateway: A Proposed Development Encouraging Community in New South Wales

Bass and Flinders Gateway: A Proposed Development Encouraging Community in New South Wales | PROYECTO ESPACIOS | Scoop.it

The Bass and Flinders Gateway development in New South Wales, Australia sits at the threshold of Wollongong and the greater Illawarra region, with the Illawarra Escarpment as the backdrop and inspiration behind the design concept- an aesthetic and metaphoric link to the building’s central location at the heart of the coastal plain between the mountain and sea, resonating the energy and history of the city.

To manage the transition between the city center and its outskirts, the profile of the buildings vary, layered as the topography of the escarpment, fine-tuned to moderate between the scales of the city, the domestic to the civic, the shed to the office tower.
At the heart of the development is a central green space, permeable to cyclists and pedestrians, importantly connected into the Wollongong city grain and its local precinct. Designed to encourage social interaction and foster a sense of community that works positively with the developing urban plan and commercial strategy of the city rather than in competition it.

Best of 2013: Energy-Efficient Buildings Off The Grid

Best of 2013: Energy-Efficient Buildings Off The Grid | PROYECTO ESPACIOS | Scoop.it

The phrase "off the grid" is quite literal: It means these buildings are not connected to the power grid or sewer systems. There is no need for trash collection and removal, and building materials are often harvested locally—making it beneficial for the environment and your wallet.

Off-the-grid architecture originally had mixed connotations, but off-the-grid living has moved beyond the typical remote shack with no lighting systems. New chemical-free stains and finishes transform reclaimed wood into rich materials for façades, while sustained rammed-earth and recycled steel lend a certain rugged appeal. It has also allowed architects to be more inventive in terms of space, creating structures that provide the privacy of typical homes—without the carbon footprint.

The future of off-the-grid looks promising—perhaps in 2014 we'll see the trend implemented in pre-existing structures in urban areas. Until then, check out the best (and most sustainable) off-the-grid buildings from 2013...

Norm Miller's curator insight, December 25, 2013 12:09 PM

Homes off the grid need energy storage and that is still the major issue, but TESLA is now making batteries for homes and someday they will be less costly.  For now such solutions are exotic and economically unreachable.

Ursula O'Reilly Traynor's curator insight, December 27, 2013 9:16 PM

Wouldn't it be good to stay in one of these buildings, even for just a short while ....I'm sure it would inspire more of us to think along the lines of sustainability for the built environment of the future. To think outside the box.
