Cantilevered Two Hulls House Overlooking the Sea in Nova Scotia, Canada

Cantilevered Two Hulls House Overlooking the Sea in Nova Scotia, Canada | PROYECTO ESPACIOS | Scoop.it

Two Hulls is a detached house in Nova Scotia, Canada, that allows water to flow freely underneath the structure.

Floating above the sandy beach, Two Hulls is one of the many fascinating detached houses designed by  MacKay-Lyons Sweetapple Architects. Cantilevered on concrete foundations, it allows the water to flow freely underneath the structure, without harming the house in any way. The perfect place to construct a seaside refuge home, the isolated plot of land, guarded by trees and lush vegetation on one side and the sea on the other,  offers mind-blowing views, encouraging a relaxing lifestyle...

Four Innovative Green Technologies That Just Might Save The World

Four Innovative Green Technologies That Just Might Save The World | PROYECTO ESPACIOS | Scoop.it

With many developing nations rapidly industrialising, dependent on fossil fuels as their energy mainstay, CO2 concentrations show no signs of abating. What will the ramifications be for food production and health moving forward in to the 21st century if weather patterns become even more hostile than the previous decade?

Fortunately, scientists and engineers are working on ways to neutralise emissions in to, or actively reduce the carbon content of the atmosphere until the time arises when we can transition to cleaner energy solutions. In the interim phase we find ourselves however, there are no perfect solutions, but there are technologies and techniques that can help combat the climate catastrophe that will be unleashed if CO2 concentrations continue to rise unchecked. Here a four such technologies…

This has some interesting ideas but I'm not so sure about  bio-engineering... that seems like it could backfire or get out of control and have unintended side-effects.

The Hotel at the end of the Earth by Saunders Architecture

The Hotel at the end of the Earth by Saunders Architecture | PROYECTO ESPACIOS | Scoop.it

The Fogo Island Inn and art gallery designed by Saunders Architecture is situated on the rugged coast of Newfoundland, Canada. The 29 guest rooms all face the ocean and look onto the fishing grounds that originally attracted people to Fogo Island centuries ago.

From the architect:

Ecological and self-sustaining systems were subtly integrated from the beginning of the project, incorporating technologies to reduce and conserve energy and water usage. The inn is a highly insulated steel frame building and the windows have the equivalent rating of triple pane glazing. Rainwater from the roof is collected into two cisterns in the basement, filtered, and used for the toilet and laundry water and also to be used as a heat sink for all of the kitchen appliances. Solar thermal panels supply hot water to the in-floor radiant heating as well as the laundry and kitchen equipment. The sound transmission classification of 69 between guest rooms ensures that guests hear only the sound of the nearby waves. The outbuilding houses wood fired boilers and solar thermal panels on the roof. The required number and orientation of the solar panels dictated the form of the outbuilding.

Photo Series: A Beautiful Natural Phenomenon Turns A Maldives Beach Into A Brilliant Starry Mess | PROYECTO ESPACIOS | Scoop.it

Taiwanese photographer Will Ho captured some beautiful images of a beach covered in millions of glowing, bioluminescent phytoplankton while in the Maldives recently.
The brilliant blue light emitted by this particular type of phytoplankton called Lingulodinium polyedrum was due to stress caused by crashing waves and other movements.

This beautiful prefab house called the Mini Mod by MAPA utilizes prefab construction, allowing for the home to be built in a controlled environment, creating less of an impact on the construction site. What you see here is just a version of what can be built, expanded and created using the modular system that MAPA has designed.

The ultimate bachelor house. I would love one even just as a small cottage. Only thing is, you need to be far from neighbours and other people unless you want to know what a fish in an aquarium feels like.

Yale School of Management by Foster + Partners

Yale School of Management by Foster + Partners | PROYECTO ESPACIOS | Scoop.it

The new Yale School of Management (SOM) Campus will unite the SOM’s faculty departments together at a single location for the first time. The building has been designed in response to an integrated curriculum that has the potential to reinvent business school education.

The ground floor contains the public space, cafes and auditorium, with the classrooms and study areas on the upper floors. The classrooms are contained within eight double-height oval drums, visible through the glazed façade. These curved spaces facilitate the integrated teaching methods of the curriculum – more than one lecturer can address the class at once, while still allowing every student a clear view and encouraging free interaction. - See more at: http://architype.org/project/yale-school-of-management/#sthash.6Csdu21M.dpuf

The colour temperature of this series of LED lamps by Rotterdam designer Arnout Meijer can be adjusted to create different moods throughout the day.

Meijer presented the project as part of the [D3] Design Talents exhibition at imm cologne trade fair last week.

He designed the Thanks for the Sun series in response to the need for light that fulfils different roles - providing bright white light for working and aiding concentration, and a warmer, more soothing hue to help people relax.

Minimalist High Performance Rowing Centre, Portugal

Minimalist High Performance Rowing Centre, Portugal | PROYECTO ESPACIOS | Scoop.it

Rowing High Performance Centre is a minimalist building located in Pocinho, Portugal, designed by Alvaro Andradre. The Rowing High Performance Centre in Pocinho is located in one of the most beautiful and idyllic valleys in the world – the Douro valley – one of the places of choice for champions of this sport. The project is structured into three key components: Social Zone, Housing and Training. The entire project fuses with the reinterpretation of two secular elements of landscape construction in Douro Valley: the walled terraced, a recurrent form of “inhabiting” this place, and the great white volumes of large production units, deployed along the terrain, are formally complex and diverse volumetrically.

Bernardo Bader's Haus Fontanella is a chalet built from local wood

Bernardo Bader's Haus Fontanella is a chalet built from local wood | PROYECTO ESPACIOS | Scoop.it
Bernardo Bader Architects sourced pine and spruce from the surrounding slopes to build this picturesque chalet in a village of western Austria.

The house is situated on a inclined south-terrace-plane to not only benefit from the great view, but also to optimise the property's borders, with the building placed on the upper part of the property and the volume kept as compact as possible.

The whole facade of the building is a made of differently size sliced spruce boards, exactly how they are delivered from the sawmill. The intentional rough planking together with the randomness of smaller and bigger windows generate an exciting facade game and an intimate atmosphere inside with selected framed views to the exterior.

Lombok International Bamboo Architecture Festival 2013

Lombok International Bamboo Architecture Festival 2013 | PROYECTO ESPACIOS | Scoop.it
To raise awareness about the significance of bamboo, a collective of groups hosted the Lombok International Bamboo Architecture Festival in December 2013.

Bamboo, one of the fastest-growing plants in the world, has gained its cultural and economic significance in Southeast Asia not only due to its speedy growth, but also thanks to its strength, which allows it to be often used as building material instead of steel.

This peculiar monocot plant is also a popular ingredient in Asian cuisine and can be used to create fine, long-lasting furniture and other diverse structures. And bamboo was also the centerpiece of an international festival initiated this year in Lombok, Indonesia, in the hope of making it an annual event.

Apelle: A Contemporary family home in Karjaa, Finland

Apelle: A Contemporary family home in Karjaa, Finland | PROYECTO ESPACIOS | Scoop.it

Karjaa-based architectural practice, Casagrande Laboratory, has recently completed the Apelle project, a contemporary family home is located in Karjaa, Finland.

This wooden structure rests in a natural harbour- a sheltering pocket surrounded by bed rocks and trees.

From the architects:

“House Apelle is part of nature. The surrounding forest has been architecturally articulated into a shelter for a family of contemporary natives. The house is in the forest as much as the forest is in the house – the architecture is a mediator between  man and nature."

Stacking Green by Vo Trong Nghia Architects

Stacking Green by Vo Trong Nghia Architects | PROYECTO ESPACIOS | Scoop.it

Description from the architects:

The house is constructed on the plot 4m wide and 20m deep. The front and back facades are composed of layers of concrete planters cantilevered from two sidewalls. To water plants, the automatic irrigation pipes inside the planters were installed. Rainwater is collected in the tank and pumped up for this irrigation system.

The green facade and roof garden protect its inhabitants from direct sunlight, street noise and pollution. According to the post-occupancy measurement of the indoor environment, wind flows throughout in the house thanks to the porous façades and 2 skylights. This result was already proven by the behavior of the inhabitants; they scarcely use the air conditioner even in the tropical climate, their electricity fees are just 25USD per month, thanks to the wind flow and other passive design methods.

Into the Shadow by NIO Architecten

Into the Shadow by NIO Architecten | PROYECTO ESPACIOS | Scoop.it

Rotterdam-based NIO Architecten, an architecture practice with a scope of work over recent years that illustrates its commitment to explore the potential of transient and forsaken urban territories, recently completed a project refocusing the public’s attention on the aesthetic values of a covered passageway in Amsterdam’s Watergraafsmeer neighbourhood, transforming it into a spatially and functionally attractive infrastructure.

The 40-m-long tunnel was an immersive light installation that grants pedestrians a front row seat to captivating scenes. Depicting a variety of animals in movement, the structure’s retaining walls feature ravishing white LED light strips protected with a vandal-resistant tempered frosted glass screen, printed with a reed-like pattern.

The dynamic narratives are revealed by controlling only an array of the 12,000 fixtures comprising the lighting system, operable 24 hours a day. The installation appears to be actually engaging in some sort of augmented storytelling as the moving images enable the passers-by to immerse themselves in a real-time multimedia urban safari.
