Prometheus initial review - spoiler free
For anyone worried about Prometheus in 3D - just go and see it in 2D because it looks fantastic. The opening scenes are breath-taking when you watch the DLP: Sharp, spotless and rich. The camera lens does the work. I do wonder why we need 3D at all. Now, I've not seen the film in 3D only in 2D at the moment so I won't make a judgement on how good 3D is. However, I would say that the film doesn't look overtly designed for 3D. Yes I will say that because the scenes that I know would work well in 3D work really well in 2D. The sound is very deep and a well-designed soundscape to enhance the images. It's also a film that you can tell has been designed based on visual principals of good solid cinematography: textual, tonal contrasts and depth. I've seen criticism about the camera angles being point and shoot. Bollocks. There are a lot of wide shots that let the viewer take in the scope of the scene. The use of low res video like Alien keeps tension but it works in a different way. So is this a good film? Yes. It's good. Is it brilliant? Depends on who is going to see the film. I would say from a technical point of view it's excellent. A story view? It has plot holes, but those holes can be deceptive - believe me. Some things you need to think about. The writers will not be out geeked on this story. The Dialogue has been slated by other movie reviewers. I do sometimes feel that some of the scenes are too short when dealing with intimacy of certain characters. The dialogue can seem flat but I think it's deliberate. But I'm not surprised when thinking about the purpose. Yes, there is a definite purpose to this film. Remember that it's made by someone who understands advertising - visual messages and signals. There are things in this film that you don't get time to study. Just like Alien and Bladerunner. There's lots of attention to detail. It is a breath of fresh air after the fizzy pop of the Avengers. The pace of this film though is similar to Alien but not the same. It has a grand slope up to a stuttering series of hits then a sweep upwards that leaves you feeling... not cheated but full of questions and with a longing for something more. This is not a horror film. It's a thriller. It does thrill is unusual ways that many may find disappointing. In fact this is more paced like Bladerunner than Alien. I do feel that there was a pressure on Ridley Scott that chokes the film's full potential. Perhaps to make it a 15? Studios and Financiers are very well known to be a major problem to making a filmmaker's film. Ridley Scott and all the crew did a very good job in the face of all the problems that film making under pressure has. One thing, without doubt or question Scott has proved that if you want something to be real... make it! CGI has been proven to be wanting. Computer graphics are perfect for machines but organic or natural elements just suck when you compare with things that are physical. Prometheus has landed and it will challenge other creator's regarding how films can be made. Better films will be born from this. I wonder as well if it will make cinema goers think about what kind of experience they really want. Well that was deep. Just go and see it and enjoy. I give it 4.5/5. But on this star system I will give it a 4/5. www.shadowlocked.com
