Biofuel investments at seven-year low as BP blames cost

Biofuel investments at seven-year low as BP blames cost | Projet IEVS | Scoop.it
Europe’s biggest oil companies are scaling back work on the next generation of biofuels, a setback for the effort to create a gasoline substitute that doesn't threaten the worlds food security.

BP Plc and Royal Dutch Shell Group Plc have halted funds for four separate ventures because the technology to produce fuel from woody plants and waste won’t be economical until 2020 or beyond, executives at both companies said in interviews.

“This is very capital intensive,” Phil New, head of BP’s biofuels program, said in an interview. “There’s lots of difficult engineering. It will take time for scale-up.”

Biofuel Investments at Seven-Year Low as BP Blames Cost

Europe’s biggest oil companies are scaling back work on the next generation of biofuels, a setback for the effort to create a gasoline substitute that doesn’t drain the food supply.

BP Plc (BP/) and Royal Dutch Shell (RDSA) Group Plc have halted funds for four separate ventures because the technology to produce fuel from woody plants and waste won’t be economical until 2020 or beyond, executives at both companies said in interviews.

“This is very capital intensive,” Phil New, head of BP’s biofuels program, said in an interview. “There’s lots of difficult engineering. It will take time for scale-up.”

The decisions helped cut global investment in biofuel production to $57 million in the first quarter, the lowest since 2006, from its peak of $7.6 billion in the last quarter of 2007, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. That makes it less likely the industry will meet the ambitions of U.S. and European leaders to help reduce fossil fuel pollution and wean motorists off crude oil-based fuel.

“Progress in deploying these technologies has been slower than many had anticipated and what’s needed to keep on track with our aspirations,” Maria van der Hoeven, executive director of the International Energy Agency, said in an e-mailed response to questions. “Many potential producers have found it difficult to secure the capital they need.”

BP to Sell Wind Energy Business to Refocus on Oil and Gas

BP announced a plan to sell their US Wind energy business as a part of efforts to refocus on oil and gas operations.

A BP spokesman said, “For BP, this effort represents another example of prudent and active management of our global portfolio. It is part of a continuing effort to become a more focused oil and gas company and re-position the company for sustainable growth.”

Wind power is BP’s largest renewable energy businesses and they have built one of the largest wind businesses in the U.S. with full or part ownership of 16 wind farms in nine states. Over the last six years, assets are reportedly worth about $1.5 billion.

While BP didn’t report the value themselves, they did say in a statement they expect “attractive offers” for the assets.

BP has invested more than $55 billion in U.S. energy development the last five years, according to the company.

Fin de partie pour le solaire photovoltaïque ? | Projet IEVS | Scoop.it
Le boom actuel des projets d'installations photovoltaïques risque de n'être qu'un feu de paille. En effet, le récent moratoire change la donne pour les professionnels du solaire comme pour les particuliers.

BP Biofuels: Time for “the really hard yards” in biofuels commercialization

BP Biofuels: Time for “the really hard yards” in biofuels commercialization | Projet IEVS | Scoop.it

At World Biofuels Markets, BP CEO Phil New delivered a keynote speech which attempted to turn the industry’s attention towards “the hard yards” of operational excellence, saying that “it is arguable that the time to talk of game-changing inventions in biofuels is largely behind us – at least for this phase of our history.”

“Margins are tight,” New observed, “high feedstock prices, overcapacity as the blend wall bites, depressed sugar and power prices; all part of an economic context which remains very challenging.”
