Experts & NewBIEs | Bloggers on Project Based Learning: The Role of PBL in Making the Shift to Common Core | EDCI-397 | Scoop.it
Hajur El-Haggan's insight:

This is a great resource and compliment to the BIE  video I just scooped. It directly connects Common Core with PBL and the big ideas they center around. It's really simple and straight forward and solidified my understanding of the previous Youtube video. Inquiry learning is the basis of PBL and so important in fostering children's love and ability to learn. It should be encouraged and incorporated at every level and subject, which is what PBL aims to do- as well as common core. Children-facilitated discussion and learning is another beautiful tactic emphasized here and it makes me so very happy to see these great tools incorporated in order to truly help the children learn. I just hope I can implement them correctly and effectively!

Hajur El-Haggan's insight:

This is GREAT! I would really like to implement this into my teaching, and the fact that you can start this with first grader sand even younger is awesome! It really makes the information stick in the heads of these students because it's something they are truly interested in. And not only that, but also by them being active learners and finding out the information for themselves they'll internalize it easier. It's the perfect way(at least in my opinion) to get students involved and truly learn information.

Being able to connect their learning to the real world is such a great strategy that I really want to implement. As teachers it's our job to make effective learners and students that love learning. That's definitely something my education lacked.

Hajur El-Haggan's insight:

Ahhh! This is so insightful! Although I'm not necessarily interested in administrative work(at least not yet), it's exciting to see how many principles and authorites at schools are connecting everything to PBL and use the 4 Cs in their leadership.

Curious Homework: An Inquiry Project for Students and Parents

Curious Homework: An Inquiry Project for Students and Parents | EDCI-397 | Scoop.it
International educator Scot Hoffman is a big believer in the power of curiosity to drive learning. After nearly two decades of teaching around the globe, he also realizes that school isn't always so h
Hajur El-Haggan's insight:

This is SOOOO cool. Oh my goodness I want to do this in my future classroom like NOW. I've always wondered how to cultivate and inspire creativity and involvement in my future classroom and this seems like a beautiful project to start with. I love how it can be special for each child and how we, as educators, are simply bystanders in this situation and not at the forefront of their personal education. That, to me, is the epitome of project-based learning. Especially because no other homework is assigned, family is involved, and time is given in class.

Common Core & Project Based Learning in the Classroom - YouTube

Hajur El-Haggan's insight:

I've been really interested in how PBL fits into the common core. The fact that it's all centered around a driving question is exactly what we've been learning in class. This focuses in on the topic and makes all learning relevant. I love how it was mentioned that CC is the what and  PBL is the how. That's a beautiful way to think about it.

Another awesome thing is the fact that informational text and writing was become more accessible by the students because of the matching of PBL and CC.

The toolkit of literacy was extremely helpful, and I really am looking forward to using these tips and tricks when I become a teacher. This information is all so valuable and I'm really glad I found this resource. It definitely changed my perspective on CC and shifted it to a more positive view. Teamwork is key and I love how that's needed with CC.

Common Core State Standards: Elementary School - YouTube

Visit English and math classrooms who have already begun to adapt to the new Common Core standards. See what changes teachers are making in their practice to...
Hajur El-Haggan's insight:

This really helped me understand the basics of Common Core. It's really important that the children have time to master the skills before moving on. And if that means that less topics are introduced then to me that's what needs to happen. I can think of various skills I never learned well the first time around and felt like I was drowning in later years- especially in math. I also really like how in this video math is shown to connect to real world experiences. It's so lovely to see that they are emphasizing the process of solving math so that not only the children can understand, but also their teachers.

As for English, I wish I was taught to make inferences like these students when I was in Elementary School. That molds the brain and causes them to always critically read. And when it comes to connecting these standards to the ELL, I never really thought of needing to do that. This video definitely opened my eyes to that task.

But above all, the fact that all these teachers are working together is so inspirational. I want to be able to do that with my colleagues. It's very cool to see how the school is so invested in their student's success that they are not only encouraging their teachers to work together, but they're also training them in common core.

I like the insight this gives on how to lead a school in order to foster project-based learning and the 5 C's. I never really thought about how it can trickle down from the administration to the teachers and then to the students.
