Are streaming-music services a problem or solution to music-industry woes?

Are streaming-music services a problem or solution to music-industry woes? | Progressive Rock and Music News | Scoop.it
Nigel Godrich has an opinion or two.
Basil Sanders's insight:

That said, I think it’s interesting that Godrich aimed his ire at “all the same old industry bods.” The only reason such bods are able to thrive is because artists let them—and the reason artists let them is because, deep down, they haven’t been much more successful at ridding themselves of the old music-industry mentality. New artists want to have their cake and eat it too, just like the industry executives do: They want superstardom, or at least the potential for superstardom, while embracing a new way of distributing and broadcasting music that maybe shouldn’t even be called “distribution” and “broadcasting” anymore.

Unearthing The Prog Rock Underground

Unearthing The Prog Rock Underground | Progressive Rock and Music News | Scoop.it
Metal News: Unearthing The Metal Underground: The Prog Rock Scene
Basil Sanders's insight:

The orchestration of prog rock expanded music from anthemic songs with a simplistic chorus-verse structure into compositions that took on a life of their own through arrangements that incorporated elements of jazz, folk and other forms of music in atypical time signatures. These musicians represented a skilled genre, one where a band had to know how to play far beyond 'adequate' and know all types of music.

STEVEN WILSON'S The Raven That Refused To Sing: The Legacy Of Progressive Rock? - Prog Sphere - A Different View to Progressive Music | Progressive Rock and Music News | Scoop.it

Basil Sanders's insight:

Instead, “Raven” stays as distant from his inner feelings as possible: this is the tribute to vintage prog rock some fans were waiting for, and others were hoping not to hear. It is by far the jazzier, musician-oriented album yet from this artist.

Basil Sanders's insight:

Do the advances in digital music availability avail us a deeper appreciation of music than in the past? Is this the next evolutionary step? Or are the more “social” and cultural perks of a live musical performance more important than the music itself?

ELP frontman on his desire to reunite with King Crimson and getting sampled by Kanye West
Basil Sanders's insight:

"You know, you can call anything art, right? You say it's art, it's art. But I don't think the music will stand up in the test of time. The fashion may. It may be a fashion icon thing with the safety pin through the nose, the kilt, the stupid, spiky hair and all that. But really, what does it stand for other than trying to jump on the publicity bandwagon to make money from rock music? That's all it was. Then following that, it was a genre a week. New Wave, garage . . . There was a genre a week. "

Pink Floyd: The Prog Rock Archetype
PopMatters
It simply cannot be overstated how meaningful it was, and remains, that one of the best-selling and influential albums in history happens to be the apotheosis of prog rock's canon.
Basil Sanders's insight:

Pink Floyd endures as one of the more soulful bands of the ‘70s. For this we can thank Roger Waters, whose development as a lyricist is responsible for a body of work that holds its own against anyone else’s. With the possible exception of Peter Gabriel (with and without Genesis) no songwriter composed more sensitive yet compelling statements concerning the human condition.

Bizarre True Story Behind Famous Band Names - Led Zeppelin

Bizarre True Story Behind Famous Band Names - Led Zeppelin | Progressive Rock and Music News | Scoop.it

Led Zeppelin

Basil Sanders's insight:

The phrase "lead balloon" has commonly been used to describe an ill-conceived idea, or one whose failure is both predictable and inevitable. The name then allegedly arose when Keith Moon, after being invited to drum for the band, thought the idea would go over like a "lead zeppelin"--Moon evidently modifying the common phrase after observing that zeppelin's were quite large. Reportedly Jimmy Paige liked the phrase so much, he took it for the band's name. The decision to misspell it was made because they thought Americans would be stupid enough to mispronounce the word "lead."

King Crimson, as much as or more than any other prog rock band, consistently shaped and refined a unique vision, arguably creating whole new types of music in the process.
Basil Sanders's insight:

With this: the music that holds up over time does so for a reason. It’s not an accident, or due to sentimental longings for a particular time or place. The music that manages to confront trends or commercial-minded fashion is created without any of these considerations in mind. So, what do a legendary British progressive rock band do for a second act when they’re recording their first album after the loss of one of their most important members? They turn to rap, obviously — at least, that’s what producer Bob Ezrin suggested to Pink Floyd when they were recording ‘A Momentary Lapse of Reason.’

“I brought some in to David Gilmour‘s thing going, ‘Boy, I think this stuff with a rock beat would be awesome,’” he recalls.

Fortunately, Gilmour was having none of the credibility-destroying idea. “He said, ‘Oh my God, that would be terrible,’” Ezrin says, laughing. “He couldn’t believe it. He hated the idea.”

Basil Sanders's insight:

“Whenever I hear someone throw around the term ‘prog’, I immediately assume they are talking about an era of rock music that was prominent throughout the late-‘60s and ‘70s, consisting of 30-plus-minute-long songs, gigantic 100-piece drum sets, odd time meters, synthesizers, and shredding guitar solos.

“However, to me, prog is not limited to an era in time, nor can I literally consider it a specific genre. Prog is the concept of pushing modern music to the limits, with talent, creativity and proficiency.

Gentle Giant - Funny Ways - 16mm Film - 1974

Basil Sanders's insight:

It was perhaps the most ridiculous pairing of groups ever in the history of show business. For the most part we got booed off the stage... At a show at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, we went on stage and the Sabbath fans were shouting "get off, we want Sabbath" and we were just getting set to play 'Funny Ways'. We pulled out the cellos and violins, and the crowd starting heckling immediately, but we were gradually starting to get past it, when someone threw a cherry bomb on stage. (Phil Shulman) made sure we all stopped playing and said we needed to get off the stage. As we were leaving the stage, Phil grabbed the mic and said to the crowd "you guys are a bunch of fucking cunts!", and the boo that went up after that was enormous! To this day I'll never forget it! We were sort of vindicated later on, as we thought we were never going to play Los Angeles again after the cherry bomb incident, but later on the Octopus tour we were able to sell out consistently there, so something clicked with the fans.
