Borders between disciplines have blurred. Interdisciplinary, multi-disciplinary, and trans-disciplinary models are gaining traction especially in areas where collaborative expertise is required and where the oucome is productive results. Disciplines have not become less important; rather the needs of programs and projects for the talents, knowledge, perceptions, and view points from multiple disciplines are required to tackle complex situations.

Nigel Thrift argues that interdisciplinary and trans-disciplinary research is increasing, so although "disciplines will continue to exist, ... at the very least, they will become more porous and are more likely to mutate...."
