Crisis communication: saving time and lives in disasters through smarter social media

Crisis communication: saving time and lives in disasters through smarter social media | Social Media and the business world | Scoop.it
When disaster strikes, more people than ever are turning to social media to find out if they're in danger. But Australian emergency services need to work together more to learn what works to save lives.
Lingua Digitalis's insight:

Great summary of the importance of social media in crises - but the article is relevant to any kind of crises, as I am sure many corporations would agree. There is an interesting, but true thought, however: "Institutional support for the use of social media by emergency management organisations is still variable, and often depends on the personal enthusiasm of leaders within those organisations"

Which means social media is still often viewed as something additional, something unnecessary but useful, something we can choose to engage in should we wish to. People can't  be further from the truth. Social Media is here to stay, and is a power that has already changed the landscape of communication between companies and stakeholders. It cannot be ignored. It cannot be shut down.

Industry voice: Getting Twitter right: how to perfect your business tweeting strategy

Industry voice: Getting Twitter right: how to perfect your business tweeting strategy | Social Media and the business world | Scoop.it
A Twitter feed must reflect the ‘voice’ of the overall brand or business it represents, and in a way it also becomes the voice. For this reason, a successful brand or business Twitter feed is often manned by just one person.
Lingua Digitalis's insight:

Especially notable is the section on "tone of voice" in Twitter:

either have one designated person, or a "tone of voice" guide if more people handle the feed. The example of @Sweden was a great warning about screening who has access to the Twitter feed.

Behind the Scenes: How I Write Blogs | Richard Branson

Behind the Scenes: How I Write Blogs | Richard Branson | Social Media and the business world | Scoop.it

One thing many people struggle with is what to write about. I am fortunate to have a whole host of exciting projects going on, and am usually more than happy to tell the world about them. But even if there isn’t a new company launching or a new challenge I’m taking on, there is always a whole host of subjects to write about. What do you talk to your friends about? What was that interesting article you read the other day? What was everyone chatting about in the office at lunch? Could there be a blog in that? More than likely, yes.

Lingua Digitalis's insight:

Mark Richard Benson's words: " Every CEO should make a big effort to get online. It is a superb platform for seeing what people really think about your company, and gives you a voice to engage with them."

Dozens of reasons why corporate blogs matter

Dozens of reasons why corporate blogs matter | Social Media and the business world | Scoop.it

Discover why corporate blogs matter a lot in part two of our introduction to business blogging guide.

Several businesses don’t have a corporate blog yet. Is it a must? It depends. But in general corporate blogs remain essential, despite the fact some ‘experts’ claim that blogging is ‘passé’. Corporate blogs often are essential social media hubs and content marketing hubs as explained in our introduction to corporate blogging. However, the value of corporate blogging goes beyond tactics and channels....

Chicken restaurant puts fowl to work on Twitter - CNN.com

Chicken restaurant puts fowl to work on Twitter - CNN.com | Social Media and the business world | Scoop.it
When it comes to the world of animal Twitter, you can have your Sockington the cat and his 1.3 million followers, your common squirrel and his 98,000. Betty the chicken is the real deal.

Unlike those imposters, who rely on human interlocutors to actually, you know, tweet, Betty's down there in Australia doing the hard stuff herself. It's for her employer, a chicken restaurant called Chicken Treat.
Lingua Digitalis's insight:

I wonder what is the appeal of the imaginary accounts so many people follow on Twitter, when they know it's actually one creative individual typing (I am a culprit myself, as a keen follower of @Snape and @TheTweetOfGod).

This experiment, however, takes this whole thing to the next level of meaninglessness.

'Tweet or be sacked': Changing journalists' social media mindset

'Tweet or be sacked': Changing journalists' social media mindset | Social Media and the business world | Scoop.it

Later in the discussion, Horrocks said he wasn't saying all journalists should necessarily be tweeting - just that everyone needs to understand social media. He said that today big BBC news interviews that aren't tweeted don't get credited to the BBC.

Lingua Digitalis's insight:

This is a summary piece about how journalism changed as a result of social media. It quotes Peter Horrocks famous directive "Tweet or be sacked" (from 2010!) He goes on to explain that "he wasn't saying all journalists should necessarily be tweeting - just that everyone needs to understand social media".

My message is the same for all of those who study business! You don't personally have to engage in social media but you MUST have a good understanding how the various channels work and what they are for. In this case it's not "tweet or be sacked", but "tweet for your life!"

Content sharing and storytelling: why and how people share content

Content sharing and storytelling: why and how people share content | Social Media and the business world | Scoop.it

Why do people share content and stories. A long story on content sharing: the what, why and how.

Content sharing is that – often secret – holy grail of many content marketing, social media and online marketing practitioners in general.

Although content sharing is just a part of the whole content marketing  story, all marketers want to see their content shared far and wide with as many people as possible. So, why do people share content?

The easy answer: because they want to and feel emotionally compelled to. But that’s of course too easy....
