Erica McWilliam Words of Wisdom

Erica McWilliam Words of Wisdom | Professional learning | Scoop.it

Temporary discomfort is a good thing
Passivity is the great enemy of learning
Command and Control Economies vs Value Networks
Birds can fly higher together Alignment, steering, responsiveness. Together we can all fly higher than individually
Also birds of a feather, fly together. Eg high achieving students work with other high achieving students. We want our high achievers to work with our low achievers.
Flocking – why don’t they bump into each other. They don’t pay attention to the thousand birds, they pay minute attention to the close group around them. It’s not trying to look at everything, but rather focusing on the close attention to the few that we work with
The test of great pedagogy is marked by how the low achievers are going
Idea of a "writerly culture"
'Gulliver among the little people' - look for opportunities to team.
societal demands versus moral panics
Keep radical doubt alive, but avoid cynicism"!
To be both knowledgeable and usefully ignorant’
A 50/50 ration of attention to learning and to performing is ideal But these are often imbalanced in the present generation of young people - more like 20/80
Need to work in border lands - how do we weave between coverage & learning cultures.
By building the learning culture, we inform the performance culture of our school.

Coverage Culture
• Content driven
• Test orientated
• Packaged in advance
• Pencil and paper
• Imitative routines
• Credential is the prize
Learning Culture
• Capacity building
• Personalised
• Self managed
• Focus is on the journey
• Virtual and real 'have' equal status
• Open ended
• Creative

We get it wrong when...

1. We continue to focus on the value of EdTech by what the teachers do with it NOT what the students do with it.

2. We continue to focus on the value of EdTech by what happens to high stakes, standardized test scores.
